Members <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Jarvie</strong> Society,<br />

It gives me great pleasure to write and congratulate you on the 56 th edition <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Jarvie</strong>, the<br />

<strong>Journal</strong> <strong>of</strong> the William <strong>Jarvie</strong> Society. What better way to recognize the true roots <strong>of</strong> dental research<br />

than through this <strong>Journal</strong>, the abstracts within it, and the recognition <strong>of</strong> all <strong>of</strong> our student research<br />

scholars.<br />

How appropriate that William Gies, the founder <strong>of</strong> the American Association <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dental</strong><br />

Research (AADR) and a true <strong>Columbia</strong>n, would establish such a student dental research society<br />

in 1920 only four years after the establishment <strong>of</strong> the dental school at <strong>Columbia</strong> <strong>University</strong>.<br />

Today, 93 years later, this organization continues to be a vital part <strong>of</strong> the <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dental</strong><br />

<strong>Medicine</strong> (CDM) with over 25% <strong>of</strong> the student body participating.<br />

A culture <strong>of</strong> inquiry is embedded in the CDM. It is how we teach and mentor our<br />

students, residents and postdoctoral candidates. The fabulous abstracts that are recognized in<br />

this manuscript, the posters that are being displayed during our Birnberg presentation and the<br />

overall quality <strong>of</strong> the mentor/men tee relationships continues to show our innate desire to answer the<br />

questions that so need to be answered for the betterment <strong>of</strong> oral and systemic health.<br />

You should be proud <strong>of</strong> what you have accomplished and I congratulate each and every<br />

one <strong>of</strong> you on the extraordinary display <strong>of</strong> your scholarship.<br />
