Dr. Barton’s Presidency Begins
Larry Barton, CAP ® , Ph.D., joined The American College in the summer of 2003.
His visionary leadership took the educational institution focused on the financial
services profession into the digital era.

Dear Friend of Our College:
This is my final letter to you as President and Chief Executive Officer of The American College.
A decade ago, our College faced very serious issues. After accepting the role of President in 2003, but before arriving
in Bryn Mawr, I enrolled in the Essentials of Life Insurance course so I could begin to understand the student experience.
When a box arrived in San Francisco a week later, there were two books and eight cassette tapes. My wife Eliza and I
struggled to find a Radio Shack in the Bay Area that even sold cassette players! That was the beginning of an awakening:
a great institution was tired. It had not kept pace... with technology… in faculty development… with financial
discipline… in making courageous decisions.
Thanks to hundreds of wonderful men and women, we rallied.
Members of our Board of Trustees and Foundation Board supported a vision that required we monetize our
physical campus so we could reinvest in the dream of Dr. Solomon S. Huebner, the founder of The American College.
As a result, we introduced five new centers of excellence in veterans’ affairs, women’s studies, retirement, practice
management and ethics. We recruited top faculty members from other institutions. An Alumni Association, allowing
graduates to connect and learn with live programs nationally, was introduced. We then built TheWealthChannel.com
and The Wealth Channel Magazine to keep learning alive, pertinent and as close as your mobile device. We developed
the nation’s first Ph.D. in Financial and Retirement Planning. These and other efforts enhanced a remarkable citadel
of learning.
These actions also required unpopular decisions. I had to freeze a defined benefits plan for all employees and an
overly generous retiree package that included lifetime medical coverage for employees and their spouses. Over 100
people out of approximately 240 persons were eventually replaced within our ranks as skill sets and our financial
status were scrutinized. Some decisions led to toxic accusations by reckless people who claimed to love The College,
but whose personal agendas were transparent.
Somehow, thanks to leaders from great organizations and many independent advisors, we remained focused on
“What would Dr. Huebner do” Ultimately, rebuilding The College and then embarking on the One Person campaign
to achieve $50 million in new funding became a magnet for a sense of “I Believe.”
In the next phase of my life, I am excited to now serve as Chancellor of The American College and continue as the
O. Alfred Granum Chair in Management. This allows me to serve our institution in a capacity of thought leadership,
and my first passion, that of teacher.
To each of you, for your engagement and generosity, thank you. Your stewardship ensures that The College will
continue to thrive and change - always forward looking - as higher education itself experiences rapid transformations.

MSM Reinvigorated
Only two students were enrolled in a dying program
when the Masters of Science in Management degree
was resurrected with a new emphasis in leadership.
The first class with this new emphasis graduated in
June 2005.
First Knowledge Summit Held
The first major Knowledge Summit educational
event was held in conjunction with commencement
ceremonies on December 6, 2004 in New York City.

A Decade of Progress
What a difference a decade makes! In ten years, a lot has
changed about The American College. Major progress has
been made in the area of academics, from new designations,
to new centers, to a groundbreaking new Ph.D. program.
The College has also made advances in terms of its financial
strength and stability. In 2010, the board also approved the
$50 million campaign, “One Person: Transforming Lives with
The American College.”
With support from more alumni and corporate partners
than ever before, The College has reached more new heights
in the last decade than ever before.

In the last 10 years, under Dr. Barton’s leadership, there has
been consistent, impressive growth of both total assets and
net assets.
The uptick in 2007 reflects the monetization of the
campus and the downturn in 2008 reflects market
downturns impacting The College’s investment
portfolio value. The liabilities are the gap between the two
lines. This shrinks noticeably with the sale of the campus
and the retirement of the long-term bond debt in 2007.
To further illustrate the improved financial state of the
College, this chart reflects the change in this side of the
balance sheet comparing 2002 to 2013.
In addition to the growth in equities from about
$32 million in 2002, to about $90 million in 2013,
liabilities also declined during this period.

Alumni Association Started
The American College creates an organization
to support the education and careers of 150,000
alumni in 2005. Sal Farina, CLF, CLU ® , ChFC ® ,
MSM is our first president.
The Wealth Channel ® Launched
Dr. Barton creates a model to capitalize on our digital
knowledge assets. This free online source of video-ondemand
services began providing students and alumni with
interviews of industry thought leaders on a variety
of relevant topics.

First held in 2006 with founding sponsor MetLife, the Conference of African American Financial
Professionals brings together leading companies from across the industry to further the
education, advancement and heritage of African American financial professionals.

The Future of Education

The doctoral program at The American College is one-of-a-kind. With a focus on financial and retirement
planning, this Ph.D. is uniquely geared toward our profession and the issues that impact it the
most. This year has been busy for the program. Following a spring dedication ceremony at New York
Life’s headquarters, thanks to the company’s significant gift supporting the program, the first class of
students began work in July. The second class commenced in October, and demand for the June 2014
class continues to climb.

The Ph.D. program is supported by several new additions, as well as veterans
of the faculty. Dr. Melisande McCrae joined The College as Associate Dean of
Academics and will serve as the Executive Director of the Ph.D. program. Dr.
Wade Pfau, CFA, Professor of Retirement Income, was recruited from Japan
and joined the team in 2013.

Other critical faculty members include Dr. David Nanigian, Associate
Professor of Investments, Dr. Craig Lemoine, CFP ® , Assistant Professor of
Financial Planning, and Julie Ragatz, a Ph.D. candidate at Temple University
who is Assistant Professor of Ethics and Director of the Cary M. Maguire
Center for Ethics in Financial Services at The American College.

This year also saw the launch of a new test prep program for the
Chartered Financial Analyst ® . Similar to The College’s market for
CFP ® prep, this program, Analyst Success, will educate students
who are pursuing a widely respected designation conferred by an
outside institution.
The Analyst Success program provides candidates with a simple,
effective learning experience so they can be more successful taking
the challenging CFA ® exams. By combining the top subject-matter
experts in the CFA ® field, new learning technology, and an easier,
bundled delivery, The College is reinventing the way candidates
prepare for their exams worldwide.

New York Life Center for Retirement Income Launched
The New York Life Center for Retirement Income was created to empower financial services professionals
on this critical and evolving field of retirement income security. Frequent research papers and webinars are
intended to leverage data directly to advisors.

The State Farm Center for Women and
Financial Services
The Center hosted the second annual Women’s Leadership
Academy Summit from April 17-19 in Grapevine, Texas. The
participants engaged in rigorous academic coursework, listened
to keynote speakers and panelists talk about the industry from a
female perspective, and exchanged insightful ideas while networking
with one another. During the recognition luncheon, the
Center acknowledged the cohort of women who completed the
CLF ® program after beginning their studies at last year’s WLA
Summit.
The Northwestern Mutual Granum Center for
Financial Security
The Granum Center has sponsored compelling research on how
consumers are using social media to connect with advisors. More
than 1,000 consumers and 250 advisors participated in the study,
which yielded results that guide advisors in crafting a social media
marketing strategy that creates a positive online perception. In
partnership with Texas Tech University, the Center also conducted
research on assessing current levels of financial literacy among
the millennial population.
The Penn Mutual Center for Veterans Affairs
The Center for Veterans Affairs appointed Ted Digges to the
position of Director. He previously worked for Merrill Lynch,
where he developed effective financial planning strategies for
high net worth clients. With a military career spanning 27 years

in the U.S. Navy, Ted gained experience in strategic planning,
customer service, logistics and program management. A
graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Digges holds a Masters in
Management, a Masters in National Security and International
Studies and is a graduate of the Darden School’s Executive
Program at the University of Virginia. He will help the Center
increase its impact in providing scholarships to deserving veterans
who are pursuing a career in financial services.
The Cary M. Maguire Center for Ethics in
Financial Services
The Center for Ethics sponsored the 4th Annual Cary Maguire
Lecture in Applied Ethics. The presenter was Dr. Anthony
Catanach, the Cary M. Maguire Fellow in Applied Ethics. His
presentation, “Re-engineering the Ethical Culture in Financial
Reporting,” highlighted the practices that render financial
statements less than meaningful to investors. The Center also
hosted two Corporate Members-Only Retreats and the 13th
Annual James A. and Linda R. Mitchell Forum on Ethical
Leadership in Financial Services.
The New York Life Center for Retirement Income
The NYLCRI has been a driving force in developing the
Retirement Income Certified Professional ® designation. This is the
largest and fastest area of growth in academics at The American
College. The NYLCRI also recently rolled out a robust, new
website with advanced search functions that allow for easy access
to over 300 videos on various retirement income planning topics.

Another new program has gained traction in 2013. The Retirement Income Certified
Professional ® designation has become the fastest program to launch in the institution’s
history and demand has driven its registrations to over 3,000. Since the program’s recent
launch in 2012, there are already 270 completers that hold this designation. The program
complements the CASL ® designation that has existed for many years at The College.

Campus Learning Center
Graduate School
A state-of-the-art learning center complete with video and audio conferencing equipment and
a professional HD studio for filming course content was completed and funded by MetLife. The
advanced facility offers one of the most technology-driven centers where up to 40 advisors and
leaders can meet for courses and retreats.

Student and Alumni Engagement
Market analyst Kenny Polcari, CNBC commentator, is Adjunct Professor of Market Dynamics.
Whether you are a new student, recent graduate, or longtime
alumnus of The American College, there are more opportunities
today than ever before to engage with The College. Events like
the Knowledge Summit, LIVE Alumni Tours, the Travel-Learn
Cruise and Conference of African American Financial Professionals
are fantastic for networking and continuing education credits.
College recently added adjunct faculty members to supplement
the full-time faculty members. Open enrollments are held in the
suburbs of Philadelphia, in Chicago and in South Florida. One of
the most popular new IRPs is a review for the CFP ® exam, taught
by instructors who have served on the CFP ® Board.
The 2013 Knowledge Summit was the most successful ever, with
more than 2,000 registrations and 1,300 people “walking” at
commencement. The LIVE Alumni Tour visited three cities—Miami,
Boston and Los Angeles—with sellout crowds and popular
speakers. Alumni were able to network with each other across the
country, while learning helpful tips to improve their practice.
Students are benefiting from more interaction with The College
and its faculty. The College continues to have a widely respected
online delivery system, but is also seeing demand increase for
its Intensive Review Programs. Known as IRPs, this method of
instruction involves a 2.5-day live classroom environment. Highly
qualified faculty provide students with 16 hours of intensive
review of all the major course concepts, and end the program
with a final exam. The IRP enables students to move through
coursework quickly and conveniently, and engage directly with
college faculty. IRPs are more popular than ever before, whether
held during an open enrollment or through company-exclusive
offerings. In 2013, The College held 149 IRPs, compared with
110 in 2012, a 30 percent increase. Demand is so high that The

This alumni magazine features industry updates, technical articles, and news about The American College
alumni. Edited by Senior Vice President Steve Tarr, the magazine was the dreamchild of Louis P. DiCerbo, II,
CLU ® , ChFC ® , LUTCF. He personally funded the initial issue of the publication that now has a circulation of
60,000+.

Capitol Hill
The College is also engaging in more advocacy efforts. On May
1, 2013, the New York Life Center for Retirement Income at The
American College spearheaded a Forum on Retirement Security
for Americans. The event took place at the Rayburn House on
Capitol Hill and brought together academics, policy experts,
professional groups and legislative staff to discuss the significant
issues impacting retirement security in this country. The group
focused particularly on ways to maximize preparedness among
the most vulnerable populations.
The group heard presentations on three approaches: Security Plus
Annuities from The Aspen Institute; Social Security Plus from The
American College and a consortium of partners; and Retirement
USA, Pooling and Other Platforms as presented by the Pension
Rights Center. Following the presentations, the group worked to
find areas of consensus or guiding principles that will be essential
for any legislative or policymaking approach.
What was most interesting to session participants was the
amount of commonality among the proposals. There are shared,
effective solutions around which a coalition of support can be
constructed. Starting retirement savings early, making plans
simple, providing incentives to contribute, ensuring
longevity and inflation risks are managed at a reasonable price
and using auto enrollment and auto escalation approaches—are all
strategies that will produce results.
The Forum participants reflected on the history of retirement
security being a three-tiered solution: savings, employer pensions
and Social Security. With defined-benefit pension participation
continuing to decline, the balance has tilted toward an overreliance
on individual savings and Social Security. The group
members agreed the time is right to propose a solution with both
public and private roles that effectively replaces the function of
lost defined-benefit pensions in retirement planning.

The Chartered Healthcare Consultant ® designation keeps advisors on top of the latest legislative changes
in healthcare and the impact on clients. Since the Affordable Care Act was implemented in 2013, this

2013 President’s Award
Mary C. Varner, Executive Assistant to the President and CEO of The American College, was
presented with the 2013 President’s Award on June 25, 2013. The award, the highest honor
presented by The Foundation Board of Directors, recognizes Mary for her 38 years of service to
The College.

Mary joined The College in January 1975 as a part-time clerk typist. In April 1979, Mary became
the secretary to the office of the vice president and treasurer. After serving in this role for nearly a
decade, Mary was named an executive secretary in the finance division in 1989. Shortly after arriving
at The American College, Dr. Barton recognized the valuable institutional knowledge Mary possessed
and hired her to become the executive assistant to the president – a position she has held since
February 2004.
Presented annually, the President’s Award is intended to highlight the importance of the leadership
and stewardship aspects of advancement. Mary’s long years of service, her selfless dedication to The
American College, and her steadfast financial support for this institution make her more than worthy
of this prestigious honor.

Ph.D. Program Lifts Profession
Thanks to a generous gift from New York Life, The American College announced the development of a
groundbreaking Ph.D. program in financial and retirement planning in 2012 – the first of its kind of any
college in the nation. New faculty were added to support the program and the first cohort of students
began in July 2013.

The second annual Women’s Leadership Academy
Summit was held April 17-19, 2013, at the Hilton
DFW Lakes Executive Conference Center in
Grapevine, Texas. The State Farm Center for
Women and Financial Services at The American
College recognized the cohort of women who
completed the Chartered Leadership Fellow ®
(CLF ® ) program during a special recognition
luncheon. These students began their studies at
the 2012 WLA Summit and completed the
capstone (final) course at the next year’s Summit.

was the keynote speaker at the event.
In partnership with MetLife, The American College hosted the 8th Annual Conference of African American Financial Professionals
in Atlanta from August 13-14, 2013. Once again, leading companies from across the financial services industry came together to
further the education, advancement and heritage of African American financial professionals at this vibrant industry event.
This year’s conference theme was “Making a Difference,” and attendees explored the journey that the insurance salesman has
historically traveled, and how the role of advisor comes with a responsibility to one’s client, as well as one’s community at large.
The keynote speaker was broadcast journalist and executive producer, Soledad O’Brien. As chairman of Starfish Media Group, she
continues to be a television anchor and correspondent for CNN, HBO, and other networks. O’Brien has reported breaking news
from around the globe and has produced awardwinning,
record-breaking and critically acclaimed
documentaries on the most important stories
facing the world today. In 2010, she wrote a
critically-acclaimed memoir The Next Big Story:
My Journey through the Land of Possibilities, which
chronicles her biggest reporting moments and
how her upbringing and background have
influenced these experiences.

Michael C. Davidson, MSM, CLU ® , CAP ® was awarded the 2013 Huebner Gold Medal during the President’s
Dinner in Las Vegas this past November.
Mike started his life-long career with State Farm in 1978. After 33 years with the company, he retired in January 2012 as Vice
Chairman and Chief Agency and Marketing Officer. Mike served as the Chairman of The American College’s Board of Trustees from
2010-2011. He was a great supporter of State Farm’s sponsorship of the Center for Women and Financial Services at The College.
In April 2012, he was appointed to The American College’s faculty as Adjunct Professor of Agency Excellence. He was awarded an
honorary MSM degree in June 2012 for his leadership and commitment to The College.
Named for the founder of The American College, Dr. Solomon S. Huebner, the Huebner Gold Medal is The American College’s highest
honor and has been awarded annually since 1975. It honors the select individuals whose support of the College and whose dedication
to education and professionalism have been of particular meaning to the institution.
Beginning February 1, 2014, Mike is Acting President and CEO of The American College while a search is underway to name a
successor to Dr. Barton.

Honored with Alumni Hall of
Fame Award
The Alumni Hall of Fame was established in 2005 to recognize
individuals who embody what The American College stands for—
integrity, professionalism, volunteerism, and dedication to education.
During the Knowledge Summit in Las Vegas this past November, The
American College inducted three outstanding alumni into the 2013
Hall of Fame: Debra Boblitt, CLF ® ; Art Kraus, CLU ® , ChFC ® , CAP ® ; and
Gloria La Grassa, CLU ® , ChFC ® .
Debra Boblitt, CLF ® (far left) is a Senior Vice President of State
Farm Insurance, and has been with the company for over two
decades. Debra champions the advancement of women in the
industry. She played an instrumental role in encouraging State
Farm’s commitment to the Center for Women and Financial
Services at The American College. She currently serves as Secretary
of The American College Foundation Board of Directors and also
serves on the Board’s Executive Committee. She was a featured
speaker at The College’s 2011 Las Vegas Knowledge Summit and
was the keynote speaker for The College’s 2008 Conferment at
Pearl Harbor.
Art Kraus, CLU ® , ChFC ® , CAP ® (center) began his career in 1960
with Pacific Mutual Life Insurance Company and was promoted to
President of Pacific Consulting Corporation, a subsidiary of Pacific
Life, in 1969. Soon after, he co-founded the AFP Group, which
grew to become one of the largest financial planning companies
in the country. In 1998, he became the CEO of NAIFA, and four
years later founded Capital Intelligence Associates with his son.
Art spends a great deal of his time on industry advocacy efforts in
Washington. He played a key role in spearheading The American
College’s Alumni LIVE events in Los Angeles in 2010 and 2013.
Art currently serves on The American College Foundation Board
of Directors.
Gloria La Grassa, CLU ® , ChFC ® (far right) began her career
alongside Charles Lamont Post, an early benefactor of The
College who endowed a chair concentrating on the study of ethics.
Gloria served on The College’s Board of Trustees for seven years
and on the Foundation Board of Directors for nine years. She was
the Secretary on each board for five years. She also served on the
Presidential Search Committee in 2002. In 1999, Gloria helped
fund The College’s state-of-the-art auditorium. In 2009, Gloria
received the Huebner Gold Medal, the highest honor bestowed by
The American College. In 2011, The American College dedicated
the academic floor of MDRT Foundation Hall in her honor.

Charles DiLullo—1938 - 2013
Charles S. DiLullo, MSFS, CLU ® , passed away on June 16, 2013. Charles began his long and productive career at
The American College in 1970 as controller and was promoted to vice president and treasurer of The College and
Board of Trustees in 1975. He joined the faculty in 2000 and was named the Jarrett L. Davis Distinguished Professor
of Finance and Accounting. Teaching in the Chartered Life Underwriter ® (CLU ® ) and MSFS programs, Charles was
one of The College’s most popular professors. Just before he retired in 2009, he presented his 3,000th lecture to a
group of The College’s graduates celebrating his career in Atlanta. Charles is survived by his wife, Laura Mae, their
daughter, three sons, 12 grandchildren and extended family.
Chuck Jones—1940 - 2013
Charles C. Jones, MSFS, CLU ® , ChFC ® , CASL ® , CAP ® , died on April 29, 2013. A financial advisor, wealth manager
and legacy planner, Chuck owned and was chief executive officer of Pentrust LLC, with offices in Kansas City, MO.
He moved there in 1966 when he joined the Connecticut General Life Insurance Company, predecessor of CIGNA.
During his long career, Chuck contributed to the success of numerous prestigious financial services organizations,
including Commercial Union Companies, Business Men’s Assurance Company of America and John Hancock. Chuck
served on The American College Board of Trustees for four years and on the Foundation Board of Directors for seven
years. He was inducted into The College’s Alumni Hall of Fame in 2008 in recognition of his many and significant
contributions to the institution as a valued alumnus. Chuck is survived by his wife, Pat, his three children,
grandchildren, his two brothers and extended family.
David Rubinowitz – 1967-2013

David R. Rubinowitz, MSFS, LUTCF, CLU ® , ChFC ® , CAP ® , passed away suddenly on February 21, 2013. Since 2008,
David served as a trustee of The American College. During that tenure, he contributed to the Education Policy and
Certification Committees and to the Finance and Audit Committee of the Board of Trustees. David had also served
earlier on The College’s Alumni Association Advisory Board. He enjoyed a long career at Morgan Stanley, and
subsequently joined John Hancock at their home office in Boston, and most recently Alvarez & Marsal – Executive
Benefits Consulting, based in New York City. He was a member of the Securities Industry Association’s Wealth
Strategies Roundtable and a member of LIMRA International’s Executive Advisory Group. David is survived by his
wife Stacy and their two children, Allie and Matt.

Henry A. Deppe, CLU ® possessed a positive energy that life insurance financial advisors wanted to absorb
through osmosis. Deppe, a friend and mentor to Alan Press, CLU ® , LUTCF, was always surrounded by
a group of people who believed that if they followed his protocols, they heightened their chances of
success. “Henry proved them correct in that assessment,” said Press. “Henry shared his knowledge of
the business freely, both inside and outside of Guardian, with all who wanted to learn from him.”
Deppe was the leading General Agent for The Guardian Life Insurance Company of America for more
than 20 years. He founded National Pension Service, Inc. and built it into the company’s most productive
agency. He sold NPS in 1987 after 30 very successful years.
Deppe passed away on August 17, 2013, at the age of 93. He strongly supported The American College and believed that the knowledge
it provided was the key to financial services professionalism. As a testament to his commitment to The College, a Chair in Pensions and
Retirement Planning and an annual lecture series were established in Deppe’s name, thanks to the generosity of his friends, industry
leaders, and The Guardian.
The legacy of Henry Deppe will continue also with a very special gift he made to The College—a $250,000 life insurance policy. If you are

O. Alfred Granum, CLU ®
O. Alfred Granum, CLU ® was passionate about the work of financial professionals and believed in
sharing everything he learned for the benefit of the entire industry.
After earning his BA and MA in Life Insurance in 1943, Granum joined the U.S. Navy during the
height of World War II. Upon returning home in 1946, he contracted with Northwestern Mutual in
Amery, WI. He was appointed managing partner in Chicago, IL in 1963. During his tenure as
managing partner, his agency became the first office in the industry to write more than $150 million
dollars of new business in a 12-month period, ranked first in company volume and/or premium a staggering 37 times, and qualified 42
of his 45 agents as MDRT members.
Granum conducted groundbreaking research that ultimately led to the development of Client Building and the One Card System,
a proven track to success for financial services professionals. After 23 legendary years, Granum retired from his managing partner
position, but he continued teaching his Client Building system to help strengthen the profession on a global basis.
Granum passed away on January 2, 2014, at the age of 91. He is the only person ever to be honored with the industry’s top three
awards: the Huebner Gold Medal from The American College in 2003, the John Newton Russell Award from NAIFA in 2002, and
induction into the GAMA International Management Hall of Fame in 1983. He was awarded a Chair in Practice Management at
The American College, endowed to him by his peers in 2001.
To further honor his legacy and commitment to lifelong learning, Northwestern Mutual and The American College launched the

ADAM BECK, JD, joined The American
College in August 2013 as Assistant
Professor of Health Insurance. He is the
instructor for HS 345 Essentials of Healthcare
Reform, HS 346 The Healthcare Consultant,
FP 77 Introduction to Healthcare Reform and
HS 351 Health and Long-Term Care for Seniors.
Adam is an attorney who most recently practiced law in
Philadelphia and has worked for Sellers Dorsey, a national
healthcare consulting firm, two Presidential campaigns and
the U.S. Department of Justice.
C.W. COPELAND, Ph.D., joined The
American College in July 2013 as Assistant
Professor of Insurance. In this capacity, he
conducts scholarly research in behavioral
economics and teaches graduate-level
business courses. He is the instructor for
FA257 Essentials of Life Insurance Products
and HS 323 Individual Life Insurance. He is
also a regular guest on radio and television shows, addressing
audiences on financial planning strategies. Prior to joining
The College, Dr. Copeland served for 13 years as an adjunct
professor in the School of Business at Clark-Atlanta University
and 15 years as an instructor with RS Thomas Training
Associates, providing pre-licensing training, continuing
education and business development advice for financial
services professionals.

A DECADE OF PROGRESS
MELISANDE McCREA, Ph.D., joined The
American College in July 2013 as Associate Dean of
Academics and Executive Director of the New York
Life Doctoral Program. In this capacity, she assists with
administration of The College’s academic programs
and professional designations. Dr. McCrea most
recently served on the faculty at Eastern University’s
School of Management Studies where she taught research methods at
the graduate and undergraduate level. Earlier in her career, she led the
video communication efforts of Penn State University. Dr. McCrae’s
areas of expertise include outcomes-based curriculum design,
assessment of student learning, Human Performance Technology
and research design.
THOMAS ARMINGTON joined The American
College as Associate Vice President, Assessment,
Institutional Research and Examinations. He is
spearheading The College’s assessment efforts
focused on developing a repository of data on
student and institutional outcomes, and
developing the process for using that data for
continuous improvement. The purpose of assessment is to demonstrate
the degree to which The College is fulfilling its mission of raising the
level of professionalism of its students and, by extension, the financial
services industry, with the larger goal of strengthening the financial
security of the individuals, families, businesses and societies they serve.
Tom has experience in large-scale data collections in the education,
employment, and workforce training areas, with his most recent
position being Senior Program Analyst with Mathematica Policy
Research in Princeton, N.J.
Dr. Craig W. Lemoine, CFP ® , recently completed
his Ph.D. in Personal Financial Planning from Texas
Tech University. He is also finishing his term as
Chair for the CFP Board’s Council on Education.
Dr. Wade Pfau published, “Analyzing an Income
Guarantee Rider in a Retirement Portfolio,” in
the Journal of Retirement, Vol. 1, No. 1(Summer
2013), and co-authored with Dr. Michael Finke,
CFP ® , and David Blanchett, CFP ® , “The 4 Percent
Rule Is Not Safe in a Low-Yield World,” in the Journal of
Financial Planning, Vol. 26, No. 6 (June 2013). He also
appeared on the San Diego radio show, Your Money Your
Wealth, in August 2013; and, in July 2013, on the nationally
syndicated show, Retirement Radio Network.
Dr. David Nanigian recently presented “Capitalizing on
the Greatest Anomaly in Finance with Mutual Funds” at
the World Finance Conference. He also received media
coverage for “5 Things You Should Know about Targetdate
Funds” (Interest.com, July 15, 2013) and “Why Hyperactively
Managed Funds” (Research Magazine, July 2013).
Gerald J. Herbison, DBA, MSM, CASL ® , ChFC ® ,
CFP ® , CLF ® , completed all the requirements for his
DBA in August 2013. He received his degree from
Wilmington University in Delaware.

Ph.D. Program Lifted by Generous Gifts
The new Ph.D. in Financial and Retirement Planning received
major support from New York Life luminaries in 2013. Sy
Sternberg, CLU ® and Frederick J. Sievert, MSM, together
gave $1 million to The American College to fund a doctoral
fellowship. The Sy Sternberg and Fred Sievert Doctoral
Fellowship will attract doctoral fellows who will conduct
state-of-the-art research on financial issues related to
retirement.
Robert A. Miller, a longtime New York Life agent and past
president of NAIFA, has also made a significant gift to the
Ph.D. in Financial and Retirement Planning program at The
American College. The $125,000 gift, made in honor of his
father, Sidney M. Miller, CLU ® , is funding scholarships for
Ph.D. students who are New York Life employees.
Sidney M. Miller was a top agent at New York Life for
over 60 years. He passed away on December 5, 2013 at
the age of 86. He started the family business, now known
as Miller-Pomerantz Insurance & Financial Services, in
1951. His son, Robert, joined the business in 1982, and
his son, Jonathan, followed in 1992. Honoring Sidney’s
many years of service to the insurance industry, Robert’s
gift will support the education of the most promising
Ph.D. students.
The research and teaching efforts of these Ph.D. fellows
and students will expand the body of knowledge on
financial issues related to retirement, further establish
The College as a thought leader in the field, and help
shape the future of the industry.

2013 ALUMNI CRUISE TO BRITISH ISLES
The College’s 17th annual Alumni Travel-Learn Cruise sailed along the coasts of Ireland, Scotland, England,
and France on the Solstice-Class Celebrity Infinity. Toward the end of the cruise, alumni had the chance to
tour one of Scotland’s most dramatic locations, the ruins of the Urquhart Castle overlooking Loch Ness.

On the “Best of Europe” Travel-Learn Cruise, Dr. Larry Barton, PhD,
CAP ® , presented a continuing education opportunity, “Risk Management
in a New Global Economy.” Participants discussed a case study involving
the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.
The cruise also featured the option of
a special pre-cruise weekend in Paris.
Participants had the opportunity to
tour the city’s famous landmarks,
like the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de
Triomphe.
