Some of <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> <strong>research</strong> areas are <strong>the</strong> enhancement of virus resistance, <strong>in</strong>sect<br />

resistance, fungal resistance <strong>and</strong> nematode resistance of plants beside enhanc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

stress tolerance. O<strong>the</strong>r projects <strong>in</strong>clude genome mapp<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> bio-molecular eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

4.2.6. New <strong>and</strong> Renewable Energy Authority (NREA)<br />

Development <strong>and</strong> efficient management of primary energy resources are considered<br />

important pillars for susta<strong>in</strong>able development <strong>in</strong> Egypt. Energy sources are classified <strong>in</strong>to<br />

conventional sources such as oil, natural gas <strong>and</strong> coal as well as renewable sources such<br />

as hydro, solar, w<strong>in</strong>d <strong>and</strong> biomass sources.<br />

The New & Renewable Energy Authority (NREA) was established <strong>in</strong> 1986 to act as a<br />

national focal po<strong>in</strong>t to <strong>in</strong>troduce <strong>and</strong> promote renewable energy technologies for<br />

potential applications, particularly generat<strong>in</strong>g electricity on a commercial scale toge<strong>the</strong>r<br />

with implementation of related energy conservation measures. Accord<strong>in</strong>gly, renewable<br />

energy plays a significant role <strong>in</strong> sav<strong>in</strong>g fossil fuel, reduc<strong>in</strong>g green house gas emissions,<br />

hence contribut<strong>in</strong>g to preservation of <strong>the</strong> environment. Currently, <strong>the</strong> strategy targets<br />

at obta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g 3% of <strong>the</strong> local electric energy dem<strong>and</strong> from renewable energy resources,<br />

ma<strong>in</strong>ly w<strong>in</strong>d & solar, by <strong>the</strong> year 2010, with additional contribution of o<strong>the</strong>r RE<br />

applications.<br />

NREA is entrusted to plan <strong>and</strong> implement renewable energy programs <strong>in</strong> coord<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

with o<strong>the</strong>r concerned national <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational <strong>in</strong>stitutions with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> framework of its<br />

m<strong>and</strong>ate which <strong>in</strong>cludes:<br />

• Renewable energy resource assessment.<br />

• Research, development, demonstration, test<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> evaluation of <strong>the</strong> different RE<br />

technologies focus<strong>in</strong>g on solar, w<strong>in</strong>d <strong>and</strong> biomass.<br />

• Implementation of renewable energy projects.<br />

• Propos<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Egyptian st<strong>and</strong>ard specifications for renewable energy equipment<br />

& <strong>system</strong>s, <strong>and</strong> conduct<strong>in</strong>g tests to evaluate <strong>the</strong>ir performance, under <strong>the</strong> Egyptian<br />

prevail<strong>in</strong>g conditions, hence issu<strong>in</strong>g respective licens<strong>in</strong>g certificates to that effect.<br />

• Render<strong>in</strong>g of consultancy services <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> field of renewable energy.<br />

• Technology transfer <strong>and</strong> development of local manufactur<strong>in</strong>g of Renewable Energy<br />

equipment.<br />

• Education, tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation dissem<strong>in</strong>ation.<br />

4.2.7. Mubarak City for Scientific Research <strong>and</strong> Technology Applications<br />

Mubarak City for Scientific Research & Technology Applications is <strong>the</strong> newest addition<br />

of <strong>research</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitutes <strong>in</strong> Egypt that was directed to <strong>the</strong> development <strong>and</strong> renovation of<br />

<strong>in</strong>dustry.<br />
