BSB Charity work
2009 Review
The Charity Committee would like to thank
everyone at BSB for their fantastic support and
the many contributions made during the academic
year 2008-2009. Thanks to the combined efforts
of the students, staff, and parents, we have been
able to make a difference to the lives of many less
privileged people around us.
Our charity drives this year have included Jeans
for Genes Day in support of children with genetic
disorders, the Shoe Box Appeal, to help the
orphaned children from the Concordia Children’s

Editor’s Note
I can hardly believe that we are at
the end of the year already. Year
10, 11, and 12 have now finished
their IGCSE exams and I am about
to head off on the Madrid Trip with

Ms Kemp and KS 3&4 students.
This busy end to the year is
reflective of the entire year as it
has been go go since September
2008. I really can’t remember
having had a year where everyone
at school worked so hard, and
this is evident in the fact that we
have achieved so much in one
year. The ISI inspectors could
not believe that this is only our
second year in Pipera. Indeed,
the mind boggles when I look to
the future and ponder what we
might achieve in the end of next
year ahead. Mr Mulvany and Mr
Kelly did a fantastic job with the
school productions. Ms Kemp
and Mr O’Brien did a wonderful
job improving the PE department.
Ms Kemp also did an incredible
job developing the DT curriculum
organising the DT Days and the
weekly DT classes. Add to this the
fact that we have a new DT room,
a new set of classroom laptops, a
new climbing frame and play area
for Foundation, thousands of new
books for the schools libraries, a
set of 20 or more new keyboards
and a host of other instruments,
the new Adult Classes, and the list
goes on, and it is clear that it has
been a very good year for everyone
here at BSB.
It is therefore fitting that with such
a busy and successful year that we
should finish on a high note. In the
last month we have had the School
Fair -a huge success, the School
Productions, times five, Sports
Day, a host of school trips, the SAT
and IGCSE exams, Science Day,
Space Day, and many other events,
all of which you can read about in
Farm, the Christmas Bazaar and last but certainly
no least, the BSB Summer Fair. We were able to
raise money for various charity organisations
like St Stelian’s and Leslie Hawkes. The success
of the two fairs was, to a great extent, due to the
outstanding organisational skills of the PTA which
has been headed this year by Cathryn Henderson.
Thank you once more for your commitment to this
task!
Students have also played a very important role
in ensuring the success of all these initiatives;
they have even organised and run their own
fundraising events. Natalie and Naomi (Year 7)
have sold second hand books to raise money for J
K Rowling’s Children High Level Group and Tudor
and Mihnea (Year 9) have sold self made sushi and
waffles to raise money for the Children’s Hospital.

evidence of the incredible amount
going on at BSB.
To end, I would once again like
to thank all those who helped to
make this Issue the great read that
it is. In particular, I would like to
thank Mr Brad Hamacher for his
many contributions to this issue. A
big thank you also to Mrs Calthrop,
Ms Kemp, Mr Leese, Mr O’Brien,
Ms Hussain, Ms Greenwood, and
Mrs Wells for your help. And last
but not least, thank you to all
the students who contributed to
this issue, especially Ana Year
7, Noor, Year 9, and Senia and
Andreea, Year 10. Have a great
summer break and see you all in
September.

Parents have generously donated clothes, toys
and shoes throughout the year. These items
went to Remar, an organisation that works
with homeless people. Thank you for all your
donations.
I would also like to thank my lovely and energetic
colleagues from the Charity Committee, Ms Kath
Homer and Ms Rocio Marti! Our work has taught us
that there is nothing as rewarding as being able to
inspire a smile of gratitude on someone’s face.
We look forward to making a difference to the lives
of those in need next. We hope you will join us in
this task.
