Mike Blake – 507 S. Batavia Avenue – Batavia: Has lived in Batavia for 20 years and has known Dryden the entire time. It can be understood and agreed upon that he can ‘be in your face’, but that is a part of his charm. All of your teachers are educated. Dryden is the only person who picked up that the survey violated the rights of the 5 th Amendment. Everyone who looked at that survey should have realized that as well. The survey violated HIPA. The District should commend Dryden and not censor him. Praise him as an education hero that he is. Morgan Piper – 200 Aldine Avenue – Batavia: She is currently a sophomore at Batavia and was in Dryden’s class when the survey was given. She appreciates him as a teacher. He caused her to find a love for learning. His love for history is amazing. She has never encountered a teacher who loves what he teaches as much as he does. He makes you want to learn. She will remember Dryden for the rest of her life. Her parents were not able to come to the meeting tonight. Dryden makes students think about their opinions and that it is ok not to agree with him. The survey was to protect the students and not to incriminate them. Olivia Mole – 35 North Dixon Drive – Batavia: She is a student of Dryden. It was this class where she learned about the Bill of Rights. Dryden handed out the survey and informed the students of their 5 th Amendment Rights. He did not tell the students not to fill out the survey, just told them about their rights. He was using the survey as a teachable moment. Meg Humphrey – 517 Blaine Street – Batavia: She is addressing the Board as a concerned parent. She is concerned and wants to make sure that any information will be removed from her son’s records. How will this information be retrieved It is not ok that this personal information is out there for the taking. Anais Peterson – 707 Mitch Street – Batavia: She thanks the Board for the survey. The High School wants to help the students. The Administration is scared of the results. Every student knew that something was not correct regarding the survey. Dryden took the voice in the students’ head, but gave them the reasoning as to whether or not to answer the questions of the survey. Ralph Henning – 940 Hodge Lane – Batavia: Has been a resident for 12 years. He knows Dryden only by his reputation. Did the Board
examine the emotional stress when the form was approved and when the student’s name was on the form Was the appropriate ethical information evaluated If not, then why not Alexander Swenson – 935 Mandrake – Batavia: No comment made. Jordan J. Repka – 1½ E. Wilson Street – Batavia: No comment made. Betsy Zinser – 801 Wind Energy Pass – Batavia: No comment made. 4.3 Representatives 4.3.1 Sherri Poulos, BESPA President Not present at meeting. 4.3.2 Tony Malay, BEA President Malay welcomed the new members of the Board of Education. He also congratulated the accounting team. Malay stated that it is an honor to teach students who want to excel. He thanked Ambassador Nicholas Kelly. Malay enjoyed Kelly’s comments to the Board. The BEA has chosen sixteen consultants (teachers) will work with the CEC. These individuals will go through the same training modules as the administrators. On May 8 a summit was planned and held at the cooking school of Dr. Newkirk’s mother. Malay wants to continue the strong collaborative relationship. The House and Senate signed a moratorium pushing off VLS schools for a year. The BEA will continue to work with other districts to make sure that the charter schools happen only if it is what is in the best interest of the students. The NEA Assembly platform is set for the national level and will be held in Atlanta. Tony Malay and Amy Biancheri will be attending. Batavia will be defending their first place title as the number one contributor in Illinois. Malay will have no comment regarding John Dryden until the Appeal Hearing. His only comment is that Malay hopes that he would have as many students coming to bat for him as they did for Dryden. 5. CONSENT AGENDA
