Virtual Learning
A new distance learning network was installed during the summer of
2007 in our high schools. The system provides continuous presence
two-way voice and video communication between schools. This
allows classes to be offered in schools where it is not cost effective
to have a teacher on-site. Classes include Advanced Placement and
Dual Enrollment Calculus for high school students.
The A. Linwood Holton Governor’s School offers many dual enrollment
classes using Internet-based telecommunications technologies.
Courses include Engineering, Astronomy, and Anatomy. In
addition, the Virginia Department of Education offers many classes
through their Virtual Virginia Advanced Placement School. These
classes are taught using an asynchronous Internet-based technology.
Gifted Education
The Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program is
facilitated by two faculty members, David Winship at the
elementary level and Carol Sutton at the middle and high
school levels. Each school has a coordinator who is in
charge of carrying out the individual school program. Each
school has an individually developed and funded program.
There are also division-wide programs at each level which
are provided for identified GTE students.
To qualify for services in GATE, students at the elementary
level are referred for evaluation in General Intellectual
Aptitude. At the middle school level, SpecificAcademic
Aptitude (core subjects) and Visual and Performing Arts
Aptitude are assessed. At the high school level, the previous
categories, as well as Practical and Technical Arts
Aptitude, are available for assessment and identification.
Identification is determined using a combination of objetive
testing, subjective rating from teachers and parents,
and demonstration of advanced classroom and skills performance.
Referrals can be made by school staff, students,
or parents.
Special Education
Special education services are provided for all eligible students.
Currently, 1,141 students are receiving specially designed instruction
to meet their unique needs. There is a continuum of service
models from consultation services to a full-day program in a selfcontained
class. Services are determined by a committee, which
includes the parent and, if appropriate, the student. Students
suspected of having a disability may be referred by the parent,
teacher, or other interested party. Written parent permission is
required before evaluation. Referral may be made directly to the
Supervisor of Special Education or to the Child Study Committee
in the school the child attends or will attend. For more information
