SQUATTER’S CASTLES<br />

This course looks at land development<br />

and regulation in the 19th century as<br />

the pastoral industry enabled squatters’<br />

power and influence to grow. The Ogilvie<br />

family who emigrated in 1824 are the case<br />

study for this pattern of settlement and the<br />

establishment of “castles”. (5 sessions)<br />

ENGINEERING<br />

Civil engineers and their forerunners have<br />

been designing and building civic infrastructure<br />

for some 5,000 years. This series<br />

traces the origins of the civil engineers’<br />

skills from the Romans, Renaissance<br />

and Industrial Revolution to 1900; roads,<br />

canals, railways, materials, mathematics,<br />

buildings, water supply and sewage.<br />

the world is getting worse and capitalism<br />

is to blame. We will look at the information<br />

which shows this to be incorrect. Participants<br />

will be encouraged to discuss<br />

this information and carry out their own<br />
