IMPORTANT – Please Read! • Members of Sydney U3A may join courses in any region. • You must book for all courses unless indicated otherwise. • To book into a course, contact the Booking Secretary: on the phone number provided. If no Secretary: or other contact is listed, contact the Course Leader. • Don’t procrastinate - book early to avoid disappointment, as many classes fill quickly. • Don’t enrol in more courses than you can possibly go to. If you have booked into a course and later decide not to proceed with it, please advise the booking person so that others may enrol. • Creative Writing courses are in great demand - please do not book into more than one of these. • If courses are fully booked the Course Secretary: or Leader: will keep a waiting list which will be reviewed at intervals. • Note that most courses are fortnightly, but some (mainly languages) are weekly. A few meet less frequently. • A planning calendar is provided on the back page as an aid to choosing fortnightly courses. • Many courses include a small fee for materials or use of equipment. If this is greater than $5 for a 10 session course, the amount will be specified in the course description. • In the case of problems, contact the Regional Course Coordinator or nominated Venue Coordinator – however Course & Venue Coordinators will NOT take bookings for courses. Members are asked to wear their name badges at all meetings and courses SYDNEY U3A Incorporated U3A operates in many countries to provide low-cost intellectual stimulation for people in active retirement. CALENDAR OF EVENTS Semester 2, 2007 ENDEAVOUR REGION THE ENDEAVOUR ANNUAL LUNCHEON Will be held on Wednesday 29th August 2007 All members of Endeavour Region U3A past and present welcome. Endeavour Region Occasional Address Sutherland United Services Club IRAQ AND IRAN A PRESENTATION BY GWEN NAY The presentation will include an illustrated account of our travels in these countries in 2001 and 2002 and include a brief overview of the history of the region, especially since World War One. From this, some insights may be drawn regarding the current situatIon with its bitter hatreds – ethnic religious and tribal – which are tearing at the heart of Iraq. Where: United Services Club, 7 East Parade, Sutherland When: Tuesday 31st July, 10:15 – 12:15 Cost: $2 at the door No booking required LIFE’S PATHWAYS AND CROSSROADS The discussion is based on a life cycle model with emphasis on decisions made in several transition periods. These decisions determine how we spend our years in retirement. Special emphasis is placed on the weighted value of a number of events occurring during most of our lives. Many of us make decisions which are based on impulse rather than reason. Some misconceptions of the ageing process will be highlighted. Paul d’Arbon’s extensive medical career and his specialisations give him a unique insight into this subject. The Historical Animal Quarantine Reserve Speaker on the History – Margaret Roberts City of Canada Bay Library End of Spring Street, Abbotsford Friday 14th September 2007, from 12:30pm Enjoy meeting old friends – new friends in this verdant idyll on the edge of the Hen and Chicken Bay, part of the Parramatta River. This delightful reserve is a favourite of many of the City of Canada Bay’s residents and those who discover it. Explore the old stables, stroll down to the sparkling water’s edge, meander along the paths amongst the trees to hear the bird song. We will meet near the shelter towards the left of the Spring Street entrance. There are limited tables and seating for those traveling by public transport. If arriving by car, please bring a seat or two. The upper area is grassed and level at the street entrance. Street parking available Public transport by bus or ferry/walk. Bus #438: Circular Quay – Abbotsford wharf. BYO – Lunch, drinks, glass, bottle opener, tea or coffee (no hot water available), hat, sun screen and seating, if traveling by car.
