First, early days including slavery, then<br />

vignettes on the Royal Navy, China and<br />

THE RISE AND FALL OF<br />
COMMUNISM<br />
What did Marx mean by Communism,<br />
and how were his ideas transmuted into<br />
an ideology enabling Lenin to win power<br />
in Russia in 1917 We examine Stalinism<br />
in the 1930s, Maoism in China, stagnation<br />
in the USSR in the 70s and 80s and the<br />
collapse of the system under Gorbachev.<br />

CRIME AND ITS CAUSES<br />
I intend to consider the nature of crime with<br />
special reference to criminal responsibility<br />
and to look at some possible causes of<br />
criminal delinquent behaviour. I will outline<br />
some of the ways in which attempts to<br />
explain criminal behaviour have been<br />
suggested. These will include both social<br />

course is for the lay person who would<br />
like to understand how each scientist built<br />
on the discoveries of their predecessors<br />
to produce ground-breaking insights into<br />

many books on Origins with her husband,<br />
the late Rabbi Brasch. She has published<br />
an Encyclopaedia of Beginnings<br />
and revised her husband’s first book<br />
on Romantic Origins of Superstitions,<br />
Customs, Phrases and Sayings and will<br />
explain many examples or everyday customs<br />
and superstitions. (2 sessions)<br />
