GREATER WESTERN REGION TRIPS RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE ARMIDALE A CITY FOR ALL SEASONS THE HEART OF NEW ENGLAND Wednesday 5th September 2007 Departing Fitzwilliam Street, Parramatta at 9.00am, we make our way to the Sydney Children’s Hospital for a visit to Ronald McDonald House. On arrival we will be welcomed with morning tea before a talk and tour of the facility and the services offered by Ronald McDonald House. Then on to Maroubra Seals Club for a two course lunch. We will complete our day with a tour of the Southern Beaches and then north to Watsons Bay before heading home to Parramatta. Cost: $34.00 all inclusive. Armidale is steeped in history with fine architecture, beautiful cathedrals and charming historic buildings. A local guide will join us each day and touring will include National Parks and Thunderbolt Country, Inverell with the Bicentennial Memorial and Scottish Cairn and Armidale with its History and Heritage. Then we have Glen Innes and a Kilted Celt Tour through Historic Grey Street, then on to the Standing Stones, which will draw together the Celtic significance of Glen Innes as our guide presents an entertaining overview of the mystery history behind the ‘Stones’. Celtic Country touring finishes with a guided tour through Stonehenge, Glencoe & Ben Lomond. A touch of gold, strange rock formations, trout waters & history - that’s all part of this tour. EASTERN REGION HARBOURSIDE NORTH QUARANTINE STATION AT NORTH HEAD (MANLY) Wednesday 1 August 2007 Come and enjoy a guided tour to learn more about this intriguing site. The Quarantine Station was officially opened in 1832 by Governor Bourke to protect Sydney residents against epidemic diseases. Cost: $19.00. VISIT TO MOUNT TOMAH BOTANIC GARDEN, BLUE MOUNTAINS Wednesday 24 October 2007 Stroll through this cool climate garden 1000m above sea level and discover exotic plants from Africa and Europe as well as our own native Australian plants. WHAT THE DICKENS! Announcement for the Dickens weekend (29 Feb - 2 March 2008) As a result of the success of the Jane Austen weekend, there will be another fun weekend at the Victoria & Albert Guest House at Mt Victoria next year (29 Feb - 2 March). The author who was the most popular in the survey we ran at the last weekend was Charles Dickens, so this weekend will be devoted to his life, his works and his times. Places for the weekend are limited and the rooms (some with ensuite) will be allocated on a first come first served basis The format will be changed in line with our survey results. There will be 6 x 45 minute lectures with 15 minutes extra for questions and discussions. The lectures will cover more subjects - Dickens’ life; his world; his novels; discovery & invention; thinkers; art & architecture. There will be music, trivial pursuit, DVDs, banquets and much good conversation. EDITORIAL ALREADY HALF OF 2007 has passed and the Calendar and Course List for the Second Semester is here. This semester, Sydney U3A is providing more than 330 courses to its 5,000 members in its seven regions throughout the metropolitan area. The wonderful diversity of subjects offered is demonstrated in the Subject Index at the back. There is something for everyone. Best value in Sydney All paid up members can attend the courses of their choice anywhere in the Sydney U3A area at no more than the annual fee of $35. 1 It must be the best value provided by any continuing educational organization in Sydney. Our volunteers These low fees are only possible because all who work for Sydney U3A are volunteers - whether they organize and lead courses, help with the administration of courses, work in the central office to provide for our members, or serve on committees at regional or management level. Our volunteers are our most precious asset, enabling us to enjoy stimulating learning experiences and make new friends with common interests. We make it possible for retired people entering a new stage of life to enjoy a new lease of life. Guiding Principles One of the founders of U3A in Britain, Peter Lazlett set out guiding principles (in A Fresh Map of Life - the Emergence of the Third Age, Wiedenfield and Nicolson,1989). These also underlie the philosophy of Sydney U3A. The first four: 1. The university shall consist of a body or persons who undertake to learn and to help others to learn. Those who teach shall also learn and those who learn shall also teach. 2. No qualifications shall be required, and no judgment made by the university between applicants. 3. No salary or fee shall be paid to any member for teaching other members. 4. All members of the university shall be expected to offer voluntary service to it and to its activities. (In the above, Peter Lazlett was using the term ‘university’ in the special context of U3A, where there are no examinations held or degrees awarded and ‘those who learn shall also teach and those who teach shall also learn’.) All Sydney U3A members have the option of only attending courses, or also of using the experience and talents developed over their earlier lives to contribute to and further enrich the Sydney U3A community through volunteering to lead courses, or to help with the many and varied tasks of administration. Many do both. All of us have something to teach as we continue to learn. Our Obligations to the Wider Community Sydney U3A members also have an obligation to help it grow by reaching out to the wider community of Sydney. We need to share it with friends and make new friends by sharing it. We also need to think of members of the community who might be left out (perhaps, because they come from another culture or live in an area of one of our regions which is not currently adequately catered for). If we have ideas about this, we should consult with our regional presidents and make suggestions. We need to think of non-members who could benefit from membership and we need to invite them to sample a course (a guest may attend two course sessions before becoming a member). We need to grow to prosper and to meet our obligations to the wider community. New South Wales U3A Network Sydney U3A has recently joined the New South Wales U3A Network which is made up of 50 other autonomous U3A groups in the State (with a total membership of 15,000). The benefits are that we are now part of a statewide U3A community, sharing the accumulated knowledge of the broader membership and strengthening the voice of U3A and its programs with government and the community. We all are volunteers working together to improve the lives of mature retired people through continuing learning and positive social interaction. Our Second Semester 2007 Now, explore this book and enjoy the wonderful selection of courses it offers, and, if you can, volunteer to help. Don Beresford President – Sydney U3A PLEASE NOTE! U3A members can join courses in any region, and you will be warmly welcomed at any course you take. However, some courses have a limit on numbers. This is usually governed by venue size, teaching requirements or equipment limits (e.g. computers). Throughout this publication, a double asterisk (**) indicates those courses which have limits on numbers. In some cases the actual number of students who can be accommodated is also indicated in brackets. Acceptance into any course is strictly on a first come, first served basis. Consequently, you are urged to act promptly. Once courses fill, waiting lists are kept which are reviewed at intervals. Keep in mind that there are several hundred courses running at any one time in Sydney U3A. If you miss out on one of your preferred choices there are bound to be others which you might find just as fulfilling. In fact, many members report back on just how surprisingly good their second choice course turned out to be. Best wishes for another satisfying semester of learning and discovery.
