Dr. Ahmed Sameh Curriculum Vitae
10.10 Programs and Laboratories Development:
-Key person in the establishment of the M.Sc. program in Computer Science at AUC. Wrote the initial proposal,
the program development (with the help of others), presented the program to the school, senate academic affairs,
and the senate at large. The program started officially in Fall 1995. I also wrote the accreditation report to the
supreme Council to get the accreditation. I kept in charge of the program admission, and departmental support for
the first 7 years of the program. Currently the program has 80 active graduate students. Currently, I am chairing
the department graduate affairs committee, and a member in the university graduate council
-Key person in the establishment of the Schlumberger High Performance computing laboratory at AUC.
Participated heavily in getting a $75,000 donation grant from Schlumberger to purchase a Production Cluster for
research. I wrote the proposal. The Cluster is a 75 GFLOP high performance computing facility that is hosted at
and administrated by the CS department. The new facility promotes inter-disciplinary co-operations between CS
and other departments within and outside the School. Currently I am setting up the software and tools of the
Cluster, as well as assisting end-users in their high performance computing applications
- The Hardware Re-configurable Computing laboratory is one of a kind and most unique in Egypt. The laboratory
currently has tens of PCI-based boards each with single or multiple FPGA chips, most of them include Xilinx
Vertix chips. Xilinx has donated $200,000 worth of boards and chips to this laboratory. In addition, the laboratory
has two state-of-the-art stand alone hybrid computing, both include Vertix chips and conventional microprocessors.
Mentor Graphics has also donated software tools worth $150,000 to this laboratory. I have introduced one elective
undergraduate course that currently utilizes this laboratory.
- My major contribution during chairing the hardware purchasing for our department is the purchase of notebooks
for the faculty (we are the only faculty to have notebooks all over the university). Also introduced specialized
laboratories in the new Flaky Building. I also managed to get some donations for the department such as: SPARC
SUN Workstations from SUN Microsys (with the help of other faculty members), PLCs from Consys, Compuware
from Protech, Design Boards and Chips from Xilinx, Wireless Communication kits from Erricson. Through my
participation in the EE-ASHA $1,000,000 grant to Electronic Engineering, I managed to direct $81,998 to CS
Computer Architecture Laboratory, and $105,000 to CS Networking Laboratory. Equipments of these values have
been requested during the 2001-2002 budget. The two laboratories serve both CS and EE related courses. I chaired
the H/W committee for many years. Also I was the school representative at the University Computer Purchasing
Committee (CPC) for a number of years
-Participated heavily, through course and laboratory development, in the establishment of the curriculum of the
Electronics Engineering department. Before that, I have participated in writing the feasibility study and the
proposal for the new major (Lucent $48,000 donation). I have also presented the program to the Senate. The new
major has started Fall 2001. Due to my efforts, the Dean suggested that I become a double appointented faculty at
both CS & EE (My name appeared also under EE in the first catalog pages draft of the AUC catalog then)
-Participated heavily in proposing the establishment of a Computer Division within the Engineering Service
Center. A four-month “Information Technology” Certificate has started summer 2002. Also a complete catalog of
possible intensive courses to be offered by the Division has been prepared with the help of all CS faculty members.
It is expected that the Division will provide consultation arms and links with the industry
-I have been involved in the planning for new Falky building as the Computer Science representative since 1993.
My involvement continued till 2001, when I supervised the move to it. At this time I was the Acting Dean, and
Acting CS Chair. I managed to get a good space for the dept. Also we are the only department to have student‟s
lockers inside our laboratories. TA room, Faculty service room, and two storage rooms are added space to our
department. I have been the department‟s lab coordinator for a number of years.
-I have volunteered to establish the “AUC Open Source Association (AOSA)”. The association is promoting that
AUC‟s Science and Technology Park become recognized as the center-of-gravity for spreading Arabic Linux and
Open Source technology in Egypt and the Middle East by forming liberal non-profit technical communities. The
AOSA objectives are: establish and promote technology-aware Open-Source centered communities, provide
alternatives to software piracy, closing the international digital divide, provide better utilization of new and old
Page 29

Dr. Ahmed Sameh Curriculum Vitae
hardware, open the door for Internet Arabic contents, provide sort of a smart village for the community, provide
cost-effective research tools, knowledge transfer through automatic Arabic translation of Web contents. AUC
Linux project will also have commercial benefits to AUC such as: promoting AUC‟s technical name as in Berkeley
Unix, provide certifications through CACE, provide consultancy through ACS, host an annual Linux conference
that brings together the local communities, provide services, custom development, on-line E-Learning, and AUC
Linux promotion items.
-I have also participated in the Self-assessment efforts, and the course folders preparation of the AUC CSAB
accredidation- 1998. Then later on chaired the CSAB celebration committee. Before and after CSAB, I have been
developing and improving the courses I teach. I have also introduced a number of undergraduate and graduate new
courses (CS430, CS565, CS527, CS585, CS590, CS339, and CS233). I have also offered a number of independent
studies courses.
-I have installed several software tools in the general laboratories for experimental works in the areas of Artificial
Intelligence, Modeling the Spine, Modeling Service Discovery Protocols, and Simulation of Ad-Hoc networks.
These tools serve the three Artificial Intelligence courses (two graduates and one under-graduate) that I am
teaching. Recently, IBM has donated a complete E-Learning solution that I have installed on one of our servers
and started to post my courses on it. This way I will have a chance to have virtual meetings with my students live
through the Internet. I am also investigating with ACS how to integrate this facility with their WebCT
-I have been a member in the “Computer Engineering” new program development and the “Architecture
Engineering”. Initial investigation and proposed programs were presented and approved by the School‟s Academic
Committee on the April, 2006 outing retreat hosted by the School of Sciences & Engineering
times (94,95,97, and 2000)
13.Other assigned duties and scientific activities:
-Student academic advisor- 35 students per semester
-Maintaining home pages for the courses I teach
-Coordinating the Graduate students seminars and proposals
-Participated in the development of the AUC EE curriculum, and labs purchasing and preparation from the
$1,000,000 ASHA grant
-Participated in the Roboconn 2002 student Robotics contest in Japan 2002
- Established links and collaborations with research groups at the University of Connecticut (Cluster & Grid
Computing), University of Florida Atlantic (Wireless Communication Multimedia), University of Iowa (Biomedical
Spine research), and the George Washington University (High Performance Computing)
-Spent my Sabbatical year (July 2002- July 2003) at the High Performance Computing Lab of the George
Washington University- Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. During this period I have attended
a large number of meetings, workshops, and conferences in many places such as Arlington, VA- Baltimore, VA-
Washington, DC- Madison, Wisconsin- Houston, Texas- San Francisco, California- Boston, Mass- San Diego,
California- Louisville, Kentucky- Reno, Nevada- Las Vegas, Nevada- Tampa, Florida- Tucson, Arizona- Stores,
Connecticut- Iowa City, Iowa- Mountain View, Minnesota.
-During my sabbatical, I have collaborated with four research groups. In the following, I describe each
separately. All these collaborations are still very much alive and lots of interactions through Tele-conferences
and emails are taking place after my coming back from my sabbatical.
-The George Washington University Group: the High Performance Computing Laboratory which is part of
School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) at George Washington University is composed of faculty
and graduate students from Computer Engineering & Computer Science departments. Their research focuses on
Adaptive & Re-configurable Computing, Parallel, Cluster and Grid Computing, and Intellectual Properties. All
of which represent important areas of interest to my research. At GWU, I‟ve participated in the $100 Million
DARPA High Productivity Computing project. We did participate with the SGI group along with the University
of Utah, University of Minnesota and MIT. In this project, we have designed a 32K processors machine for
HPCS called Ultraviolet machine. The machine is competing with machines from Cray, IBM, SUN, and HP for
DARPA funding. I‟ve also participated in the development of new parallel programming language UPC (Unified
Parallel C). In this new language we utilize a new parallel programming model called Distributed Shared
Memory model, and expose sufficient architectural features to facilitate efficient mapping of parallel C programs
onto parallel machines. UPC has been receiving rising attentions. Many Supercomputing vendors have been
developing UPC compilers according to our specifications. Currently, there are UPC compilers for HP-Compaq,
Cray, SGI, and PC-Clusters. A third project at GWU that I‟ve participated in was a network of Reconfigurable
Computers (NORCs) where reconfigurable accelerator boards and nodes can be configured and scheduled at
run-time for sharing across an organization. When completed, the results from this project will enable domain
scientists and application engineers to harness the tremendous power of Reconfigurable computing systems in the
same common and easy way a program can use general purpose computers, without the need for hardware
organization knowledge, as it is now the case.
-The University of Iowa Group: I have been involved with this research group at the University of Iowa since
October, 1999 through our joint US-Egypt: Gore-Mubarak funded project entitled “Three-Dimensional
Page 33

Deformable Modeling of the Spine”. During my sabbatical year, I had several meetings with my US-Egypt Joint
project ($50,000) co-investigator in Iowa City. One graduate student had joined me in one of these visits. As a
collaborative effort between us, a novel software system has been developed with the following distinct
capabilities:
Ability to reconstruct 3D anatomic geometry from CT scans. Various anomalies were demonstrated on the
model.
Ability to represent the model in a virtual reality environment where the spine model can be manipulated,
disassembled, and made transparent in real time.
Ability to closely examine the spine model using a virtual glove (also called the pinch glove), which allows
surgeons to interact with the model and to identify anomalies and various degenerative conditions that would
otherwise be unnoticeable (or less noticeable) using only CT cross-sections.
Capability for obtaining real-time dynamic response as a virtual tool comes in contact with the model. This is
based on a physics modeling approach for implementing the dynamic equations in the loop.
At the Center for Computer Aided Design of the University of Iowa, a virtual reality laboratory was developed
and built. The spine model floats in front of the user whereby the user interacts with the model in real-time,
examining it closely, and identifying any anomalies. The group has secured a new $5 Million DRAPA funding
for a “Digital Human” project. At AUC, three students have finished their M.Sc theses that are related to this
project. We have a complete Spine model at AUC. And a number of research papers have been published out of
this effort.
Along with the Iowa group, we have given a number of invited lecture presentations at various forums
(University of Michigan Center for Ergonomics, University of Missouri, and Hon Industries). I have extended
the funding for this project for another calendar year.
-The Florida Atlantic University Group: I came to know this research group during our participation in the IEEE
CSIDC 2002, IEEE Computer Society International Design Competition 2002. We have received three free
Bluetooth kits to be used in implementing our project. Two graduation projects made use of the kits. The IEEE
Computer Society International Design Competition- CSIDC 2002 was held in Washington DC. During my
sabbatical I visited the Florida Atlantic laboratory. We are currently collaborating in resolving several 3G
wireless multimedia challenges including: (1) adaptive and scalable coding that will optimize digital media for
mobile devices with limited processing power, (2) error resilience when delivering rich digital media over
wireless networks at low and varying transmission speeds, (3) network access including rate control, and (4)
multimedia and video security. The synergy between the 3G wireless Internet and multimedia promises to bring a
tremendous explosion in application possibilities. At AUC, I had one graduate student finished his thesis work on
wireless Ad-Hoc network related subject. Also a number of publications have been produced out of this
collaboration.
-The University of Connecticut Group: I have been working with this research group since 1998. We teamed
together to build several clusters at AUC and UCONN. At AUC, we built a recycling cluster- an 8-nodes old
486‟s, followed by a more advanced P4 8-nodes cluster, then an 8 SUN workstations Cluster. We also have built
a Grid enabled Cluster and participated in the Grid Super Computing 2002 demonstration. Our Grid enabled
Cluster was able to collaborate with the UCONN Cluster and share resources with it. Then in the Global Grid
Forum testbed experiment, our Grid enable Cluster was the only one representing the Middle East and Africa.
We are currently developing a very promising research direction that merges components, Grid, and Web
Services. Two groups of AUC students have attended Cluster conferences and presented research results. I have
been working very closely with the UCONN team to develop new programming model for Grid Services. During
my sabbatical I have attended the Super Computing 2002 Grid experiment, and have visited UCONN at Storrs
several times.
-Got conference grants for a number of my students to attend and present papers at international
workshops/conferences. Got an undergraduate student a grant to attend the Grid GGF5 and the HPDC11- July
22-27, 2002 in Edinburgh. A Grid research group has been working with a similar group at The University of
Connecticut for the fourth year now. A recent publication was a result of this collaborative effort. Also supported
another graduate student to attend the MANET/NIST workshop about AODV workshop- June 8, 2002 in
Page 34

Lausanne, Switzerland. Also got free wireless Bluetooth kits from Erickson to participate in the IEEE Wireless
Computing Competition. Two graduation projects made use of the kits. The IEEE Computer Society
International Design Competition- CSIDC 2002 was held in Washington DC. Two wireless kits plus an
Erickson Mobile phone were given as a gift for our labs.
