2 Feb. Oh’ Nine Around the halls . . . Family Dance returns SHG’s annual Family Dance will be held on Saturday, February 14 from 8:00 – 11:00 p.m. If a student’s father or mother cannot attend the dance, students are encouraged to “adopt” a parent for the evening. Tickets are $10 per family and will be sold during all lunch periods from February 9-13. Tickets will not be sold at the door. Mostaccioli Sunday SHG’s 50 th Annual Mostaccioli Dinner and Raffle will be held on Sunday, March 1, 2009. To volunteer for this year’s dinner, contact the Advancement Office. 2009-2010 Tuition/Financial Grants Eligibility for grants requires payment of the student’s 2009-2010 registration fee of $150 and completion of the financial aid application forms by March 13, 2009. Applications received after this date will be placed on a waiting list. Father Thomas Pisors Scholarship The Father Thomas Pisors Scholarship for the 2009-2010 school year will be awarded to two current juniors who are in good standing at SHG and who are registered for the 2009-2010 school year. Each recipient will receive a $500 scholarship toward next year’s tuition. The SHG Science Department will select the recipients. Applications are now available in the Finance Office or on the SHG website under the Admissions page (click on Forms). News www.shg.org Geiger headed to West Point By Brooke Skowronski SHG Editor While most seniors are preparing to attend a college for the purpose of enhancing their education, Sacred Heart Griffin senior, Joe Geiger Joe Gieger, SHG senior, was recently given an appointment to West Point Academy. is preparing to travel fifty miles outside of New York to attend one of the most prestigious military academies in the history of the United States, West Point Academy. The school was founded in 1802 and has been attended by many well-known leaders such as Grant, Lee, Macarthur, Eisenhower and Pershing. The academy not only prepares students for their careers through education, but also teaches through physical and military programs that help expand the cadet’s ethical, spiritual and social development. Geiger has always thought about a career in the military and he knew West Point was the best place to start. “I have always thought about a military career and West Point is an amazing school,” Said Geiger SHG internship program applications available Geiger did have doubts about being appointed. Out of 11,000 students that apply only 1,100 are appointed. Geiger started applying in June of 2008 and just found out of his appointment on December 23, 2008. “I was very excited, said Geiger, It is such a selective school.” Geiger’s plans after graduation include becoming an infantry officer and eventually a ranger battalion. He plans to make a career out of the army. Going into the U.S.Army can be a very stress full experience, but Geiger seems to be taking it very calmly. “Things can change so fast in the world and when I graduate from the Academy, I won’t know where exactly I’ll end up,” Geiger admits. He would like to major in political sciences once his set curriculum is finished. Geiger must report to West Point Academy on June 29, 2009. Are You Interested In Reducing Your Tuition Costs? Sacred Heart-Griffin is pleased to offer next year’s juniors and seniors the opportunity to be part of the SHG Internship Program. This SHG administered program assists qualified students with tuition costs while providing them with professional work experience in businesses in the community. Upon completion of course work, students also earn a .5 business elective credit. Parents of current sophomores and juniors are required to complete and submit the FACTS Grant and Aid Assessment form by March 13, 2009. Students are required to complete an internship application. Qualified students will be contacted for a confidential interview. Internship applications are now available in the main office and in the Finance Office. To be considered for the internship program, the internship application must be received in the Finance Office by March 13, 2009. Sprinkle T’s are team to beat By Brian McMahon Supporting Writer That’s right! It’s CYO basketball season. A season filled with teams from schools in and around the Springfield area. Fans hope for a new season of safe, nonviolent, good old fashioned basketball. That’s not asking for too much, is it? Definitely not for the highest ranked team in the league, the Sprinkle T’s. A team with good moral fibers and respect for the game, the Sprinkle T’s simply go out on the court and get the job done. CYO captain of the all-sophomore team Dem Murkin Boyz, Kyle French, obviously thinks that the Sprinkle T’s have no chance this Feb. Oh’ Nine This year’s Cyclone swim team dove in with high expectations. “We really started working hard as soon as we could get in the water for practice,” said sophomore Joe Stegeman. On January 17, Stegeman set a school record in one-meter diving by scoring 205.50 points. The following Wednesday senior Ross Romanelli broke Stegeman’s record in driving by scoring 226.05 points. Stegeman wasn’t the only one to shine at the meet against Urbana and Pontiac. With impressive performances by juniors Chris Ryan, Sam Flessner and Alex Midden, SHG won every event except the 100-yard breaststroke. SHG defeated both Urbana and Pontiac with the final team SHG 182, Urbana 77 and Pontiac 57. This meet has not been much different than the rest of their season. That following week on January 24 SHG won with 231 points the meet against O’Fallon 182, Jacksonville 153, Southeast 59, and Taylorville 13. “I don’t think most people realize, but at least since I’ve been at SHG, our team has sent someone to state every year,” said Ryan. With almost thirty guys on the team, all the swimmers are surprisingly close to one another. “We support each other by cheering during each other’s events and after they win their event,” said Ryan. SHG boys swimming lost their first duel meet this season 112-74 to Peoria Notre Dame on January 31. Now at the middle of their season, the meets the boys have been prepping for are coming. “City is always a big meet because we have a pretty good rivalry against SHS; it’s always fun to win that,” said Chris Ryan. Sectionals is our biggest meet because if you win your event, or qualify in time you make it to State. There’s always a lot of pressure there.” On January 27, SHG won 163, Springfield 122, and Southeast 32. SHG came in first in the 200 medley relay, 100 200 400 500 freestyle, 200 IM, 50 freestyle, diving, 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke. As a team, the boys seem undefeated to teams such as Urbana or Pontiac, but Sectionals will be their test. “We all are the keys to the team’s success, and we all expect nothing less than State this season,” said Ryan. season and are due to fail, just as soon as he goes up against them. “As soon as I get on the floor, there won’t be a Sprinkle T’s, just a Kyle French.” The T’s best ball handler, junior Mason Alford, is on the disabled list due to an arm injury. “It’s hard to think I’ll be out for the first couple of weeks of the season,” sniffled Alford. “The team will need me when we go against hard teams.” How exactly did Mason “Mavis Beacon” Alford injure himself? “Arm wrestling tournament with trolls,” responded Alford. “I would have won Sixth hour may just seem like any other class during the day to most students at Sacred Heart - Griffin High School. However, for the members of Coach McDonald’s sixth hour P.E. class, sixth hour is a magical experience. What makes this class so great? The answer is simple: badminton. Anyone who has ever experienced any of Coach Mac’s physical education classes, either in summer school or during the regular school year, knows that badminton can be a very intense sport. Senior Ryan Johnson says that he is very lucky to experience the joy of badminton. “It’s single handedly the greatest sport ever,” said Johnson. Junior Max Sherman seems to agree with Johnson. “Its name speaks for itself,” said Sherman. In Mac’s P.E. classes, the gym is separated into 2 sides: the good side and the bad side. Every day there is so much pressure to see who gets to compete for the number one spot. Anyone who makes it to number one gets bragging rights for the rest of the day. This extreme sport of hitting a shuttlecock, otherwise known as a birdie, can be very tiring. It requires great strength and skill. The players must have perfect hand-eye coordination so that they do not miss the birdie. Also, the players must have speed so that they can run to hit the birdie from any angle of the court. The sport is tricky but intriguing at the same time. It can even be played with a partner. “If Jesus would have to choose the greatest thing ever, he would choose badminton,” said senior Pete Miller. Coach Mac’s P.E. classes have become famous for the sport. “Mac has sweet khaki-pant zip-offs,” said Sherman. “He’s a cool dude.” 3 two matches, if their leader hadn’t cast an enchantment on me.” Cheer up Mason, life is full of rough patches. Seems like the ball is in their court; otherwise, it will be the biggest upset in CYO history. The CYO league is full of some pretty stiff competition this year. With the right motivation, teamwork and, of course, Steven Cummins, the Sprinkle T’s will easily earn their title as 2009 CYO Champions. “It is pretty easy to motivate each other knowing you are the best player in the Northern Hemisphere,” Cummins said coolly. “Just give me the ball, and I’ll make sure the game ends before any of the other players begin to cry.” Photo courtesy of Robert Langellier Junior Kevin Wolf stays focused as he is about to serve the birdie.
