McDrew Tourney
The McDrew 37th Annual Tennis, Bags & Jazz Festival will be held August 12-13, 2011
at the Velasco Tennis Center in Washington Park. Everyone is welcome to attend and participate.
Tennis is open to players of all levels. For more information go to WWW.MCDREW.COM.
Some background on the McDrew Tournament, which was founded by Kevin McDermott ‘74 and John Drew
‘74 in June 1974 as a gathering of recent graduates of GHS and SHA to celebrate John Drew’s departure to the
U.S. Military Academy.
It started out as a picnic and tennis tournament at Lincoln Greens and although no record was kept of
the winner, the award for the best dressed doubles team went to Mike Aiello ‘74 and John Kulek ‘74.
The tournament has been held every Summer since and has
evolved from a 7 team doubles tournament to more than 35
teams participating each year.
A charity “bags” tournament was started as part of The McDrew
in 2007 and had over 50 teams participating in 2011. The
tournament is sponsored by Thomas E. Jennings, the best bag
thrower from the Class of 74.

the GHS/SHA Class of 1974.
The McDrew is now the oldest doubles tennis tournament in Illinois.
In 1995, The McDrew became a charity event and has raised thousands of dollars for local charities
