acred Heart-Griffin is a Catholic, Dominican high school that welcomes a diverse student population to pursue
academic excellence in a community of faith.
Although the primary responsibility of education rests with the parents, all of us at SHG - educators, students, parents, staff - are called to guide
the students in pursuit of the truth through a process of lifelong learning. We assist the development of talents and encourage students to
realize their potential so that together we may grow in faith, knowledge, and reason and choose to serve others in Jesus’ name.
While we influence one another in many areas of our lives, our primary responsibility is the pursuit of truth through a program of academic
excellence.
• As a Catholic high school, SHG is dedicated to the truth of Christian values as proclaimed in the Gospel; as fostered in a Christian community
of faculty, students, parents, and staff; and as witnessed by service to the larger community.
• As an academic institution, SHG assists each student in achieving a level of academic excellence commensurate with his/her ability by
offering an appropriate and challenging educational and cocurricular program.
• As a community of faith, the students, faculty, and staff of SHG cooperate with one another, the parents, area schools, and the local
community to develop programs and activities that assist the student spiritually, intellectually, physically, emotionally, and socially in his/her
search for truth.
• As Christians responsible to the future, SHG fosters independent thinking, the acceptance of responsibility, and the exercise of leadership
through service so that the reality of justice and charity, lived in truth, may imbue our global society.
Community
Dear Friends,
SHG Works! During this 20 th anniversary year of Sacred Heart-Griffin High School we have celebrated that
SHG Works. The first weekend of last October over 200 students, parents, alumni, faculty and staff
blanketed Springfield to provide service to those in need. The twenty projects completed included
cleaning up individual yards, painting porches and homes, installing carbon monoxide detectors in homes
of the elderly, and working on two Habitat for Humanity houses. In March over 70 members of the musical
cast, assisted by parents and staff helped a homeowner clean his yard to avoid being fined by the city.
Giving service is an integral part of life at SHG!
Helping to keep the pillar of prayer and the Catholic, Dominican dimension of Sacred Heart-Griffin in the
forefront is a major goal of the OP Teens. Each morning a student leads the school community in prayer
over the P.A. They pray for needs in the Church, in our world and in our country. Throughout the day each
class period begins with prayer. Once a week students and staff have the opportunity to attend Mass in
our school chapel. Both faculty and students find consolation in being able to ask publicly for God’s
assistance in difficult times and to praise and thank God for blessings received. Praying together and
supporting one another during difficult and happy times is a cherished part of life at SHG!
Academic excellence and the Dominican pillar of study go hand in hand at Sacred Heart-Griffin. Our
recently renovated library is equipped with fifteen new computers, allowing students to conduct research
under the professional guidance of our librarian who introduces them to the newest sources for online
research. Research papers written by all levels of English classes prepare them for the research that will
be required in college. Again this year, students from the science and math departments were invited to
compete on the state level. Our athletic and music programs gained state recognition, showing that
excellence and study go beyond the classroom - they are part of the culture of SHG!
Community of faith is more than a tagline at Sacred Heart-Griffin. Upperclassmen take time out of their
summer vacation to plan for and to be present with the freshmen at their orientation. Veteran students
help the freshmen feel at home by giving them a preview of what to expect in various situations. When
classes start, the seniors are on hand to help freshmen deal with their lockers and to greet them by name
when they see them in the halls. Community of faith permeates the halls of SHG and lets students know
“all are welcome!”
The generosity of donors like you helps to make SHG the outstanding school it is. I hope you share my pride
in being part of the tradition of Sacred Heart-Griffin.
God bless you for your generosity.
Gratefully,
Sr. Katherine O’Connor, O.P.,
SHG President

From the Board,
Dear Friends,
It has been my pleasure to be a member of the SHG Advisory Board and to serve as Chairperson
during the 2008-2009 academic year!
The new school year is upon us and it brings much excitement and change. This fall the SHG lay
advisory board members will have special training in the Dominican philosophy of spirituality and
education. This formation process will begin to prepare the board to take on expanded
responsibilities for the school’s operation. The Springfield Dominicans are in the process of a
significant change to a bicameral model of governance at their three sponsored high schools.
While the Prioress General and General Council of the Dominican Sisters retains canonical
responsibility for certain aspects of the school, the lay board will have responsibility for most
decisions affecting the school’s actual operation. Much prayer and thought has gone into this
decision. Please join us in prayer as we ask God’s grace and guidance for this new structure that
it may serve to further strengthen the mission of the school.
Many of you may be aware that the school is embarking on a major capital campaign to upgrade
facilities at West Campus and East Campus. The campaign is called: Generations – Pride in our
Tradition, Faith in our Future. It is an $8,000,000 campaign that will bring needed changes to the
school’s physical plant. For more information and to review the architectural renderings, please
go to www.shg.org and click on the Generations tab located at the bottom right hand side of the
screen. We hope you will be as excited about this campaign as all of us. Some of our facilities are
in great need of upgrades. The renovation and building will truly benefit many generations of
students.
Lastly, I would like to thank you for the financial gifts you contribute each year. Your generous
donations allow us to continue our tradition of providing an outstanding Catholic education to
families in Springfield and the surrounding areas. I assure you, every gift is much appreciated!
The success of Sacred Heart Academy, Cathedral Boys, Griffin and now Sacred Heart- Griffin
continues to depend on the mutual goals of the Dominican Sisters, our family of students, alumni
and friends—it is our combined efforts that make us a community of faith. A solid education and
our rich tradition continue to benefit us individually and collectively.
Blessings,
Greetings!
Greetings from the SHG Advancement Office!
The 2008-2009 school year has brought us that much closer to determining the necessary structural improvements that need to happen at
SHG’s East and West Campuses. The renovations and building plans are set, and SHG is officially in the “Major Gift Phase” of a new campaign
initiative called “Generations “Generations “Generations - - Pride Pride in in our our TT
Tradition, T radition, F FFaith
F aith in in our our FF
Future.” F uture.”
I’d like to invite you to go on-line to our website at www.shg.org and go to the bottom right corner to access our Generations building plans. If
you would like a paper copy of our plans, please contact the Advancement office at 217-787-9732. We are excited to share these plans with
you, our distinguished alumni, parents and friends, and we hope to count on your prayers and support in these coming months and years.
Even in all of this excitement, the everyday activities of the Advancement Office must keep going strong in order to supplement our operating
budget, provide scholarships and financial aid to those families who demonstrate need, market to our future students and keep our alumni
connected. Here is a glimpse, month by month, of what has been happening in our office…
August ugust - - With a generous in-kind contribution from Wiley Office Furniture, the Tracy Foundation and other generous contributors from the
Black & Gold Auction Fund-a-Project, the Advancement Office played a role in helping to fund the Summer 2008 renovations to the SHG
Library.
September September - - The new SHG website was launched. The site now has rotating photographs and all SHG publications are available online. The
website also addresses SHG alumni and offers an opportunity to make an on-line contribution.
Class agents were chosen to represent each class for the kick-off of the 2008-2009 Annual Fund Campaign, which helped increase alumni
gifts to the Annual Fund.
October October - - On the weekend of October 4 and 5, 2008 some 200 volunteers celebrated the 20th anniversary of the joining of Sacred Heart
Academy and Griffin High School with one of the largest, broad-based community service efforts in SHG’s history. Dubbed SHG Works, the
initiative involved students, parents, alumni and community members who worked on over 20 projects throughout Springfield.
The 14 th Annual SHG Mega-Raffle had another successful year despite hard economic times. The Raffle concluded with the final drawing
Sunday, October 12, 2008. With the support of hundreds of sellers and captains out in the community, the Mega-Raffle was a financially
successful event with proceeds totaling $225,620.
No November No No ember - - On Thursday, November 6, 2008, SHG’s Choral Music Department held its third annual Dessert & Dazzle at the Hoogland Center
for the Arts. The choral music students dazzled attendees with song and dance. Our student performers also served various desserts and
beverages to the audience of about 250 people, with standing room only. Dessert & Dazzle grossed over $9,000.
Through the hard work of many people, we were blessed to have another successful Preview Night for interested students and their families.
December December – – SHG welcomed 200 8th graders from the Springfield and surrounding area to take part in the 8th Grade Placement Test.
Januar January Januar y - - In conjunction with Catholic School’s Week and Super Bowl Sunday, our Student Ambassadors hosted a Souper Bowl of Caring to
collect a variety of soups for those in need. Four hundred pounds of soup was collected.
Februar ebruar ebruary ebruar y - - SHG’s food vendor, MJ Kellner, Co., Inc., along with Henson Robinson Company and the Fund-a-Project donors from the Black &
Gold Auction helped to underwrite renovations to the cafeteria. These renovations expanded the serving lines from one line to two lines, which
resulted in faster serving time and a more efficient lunchtime for our students. Renovations were completed in the Summer of 2009.
Mar Mar March Mar March
ch - - On behalf of students, faculty, staff and families of Sacred Heart-Griffin High School, we would like to sincerely thank everyone in
Springfield and Central Illinois who helped make our 50th Annual Mostaccioli Dinner an unprecedented success. This year we served 9,614
dinners and raised over $92,000 for operating costs at SHG.
On March 13, 2009, the Booster Club in combination with the Advancement Office hosted the first ever “Black & Gold with a Touch O’ Green”
St. Patrick’s Day fundraising event. The event was held in order to raise money for all SHG athletic teams, which in turn, helps the SHG operating
budget. This year’s event raised over $50,000! Although this was the first year for the St. Patrick’s Day event, the Booster Club has hosted the
Black & Gold Auction the past two Decembers.
April April – – – The Advancement office implemented a Facebook page on the Internet to keep alumni and friends updated on what is going on at
SHG. To date, our page has over 400 “fans”.
May May - -
- Thanks to the charitable gifts from generous individuals and businesses, the Advancement Office was pleased to award $15,000
through the Teacher’s Grant Fund. We are so fortunate to be able to offer this program to our SHG faculty and staff, which supports initiatives
over and above the departmental budgets. For more information about the Teachers’ Grant Fund, please contact us at 217-787-9732.
The SHG Alumni Board hosted a luncheon for the 2009 SHG Graduates and officially welcomed them into the Alumni Association.
June June – We welcomed over 70 5th-8th graders to SHG’s 5th Annual Summer Escape, a week-long enrichment camp that reaches out to middle
school students.
We held the 27 th Annual SHG Scholarship Scramble at Piper Glen Golf Course, raising almost $22,000 for scholarships.
Summertime is full of classes coming together for class reunions. We hosted over 100 guests at Nifty Fifty and 50 young graduates (collegeaged)
during the Young Alum Reunion. Both groups were glad to be back on campus!
Our new freshmen parents were again welcomed to campus so that we could all get acquainted with one another. The indoor picnic was
hosted in the cafeteria and gave everyone an opportunity to ask questions and get more comfortable with their first year at SHG.
The 2008-2009 Annual Fund is a year-long initiative that ran from July 1, 2008 – June 30, 2009. SHG is blessed to have such strong support
from alumni, parents and friends. This year despite the economic uncertainty, and the fact that most Annual Funds around the country were
down 2%, SHG’s Annual Fund increased! Our total reached over $240,000, which is up from $210,000 last year. Please
see page 9 for the 2008-2009 Annual Fund listings.
Thank you for your continued support, which makes Catholic secondary education possible for today’s youth.
Sincerely,
organizations benefited from Terry’s generosity.
Sacred Heart Griffin High School has a cherished ally in Terry Farmer. A great role model for our
students, he has accompanied them for three summers on a missionary trip to upper
Appalachia to assist low-income residents with home repair and maintenance. Inspired by
this experience, he organized “SHG Works” to celebrate the 20 th anniversary of Sacred Heart-
Griffin High School. On a single weekend with the help of 200 students, faculty members and
parents, they completely transformed twenty rundown houses on the east side of Springfield.
Over the years, the Springfield Dominicans, the Viatorians and Dominican priests have supported Sacred
Heart Academy, Cathedral Boys High School, Griffin High School and Sacred Heart-Griffin High School by
accepting only a fraction of their just salaries.
In Fiscal Year 2008-09, the contributed services of nine Dominican sisters was $205,425. During the 20
years of SHG, the religious educators have saved the school $5,051,271 in contributed services. In addition
to their contributed services in 2008-2009, the Springfield Dominican Sisters contributed $178,400 to the
Financial Aid and Scholarship Fund.
Our Sacred Heart-Griffin High School family extends heartfelt appreciation and gratitude to the Dominican
Sisters for their dedicated service and commitment to Catholic education.

Annual Fund
Thank Thank you you for for for supporting supporting the the 2008-2009 2008-2009 Annual Annual Fund!
Fund!
It is with much gratitude that Sacred Heart - Griffin acknowledges the
1,286 donors who so generously supported the 2008-2009 Annual Fund.
In a time that Annual Funds nationwide are down 2%, we are blessed to
report that our Annual Fund reached over $240,000, up from $210,850
last year!
Great care has been taken in preparing this listing of donors to ensure its
accuracy. We have received some feedback that our Alumni prefer to be
listed by class year instead of by giving category only; please note the
change this year. If we have omitted your name, misspelled it, or failed to
place it in the appropriate category, we apologize and ask you to bring it
to our attention. Our recognition of donors includes those who made
contributions to SHG from July 1, 2008 – June 30, 2009.
The 2009-2010 Annual Fund is currently underway and we hope we can
count on your continued support!
Volunteers are the cornerstone of Catholic education. Parents, students, alumni, staff and others
have supported various aspects of SHG through their time, talents and finances. This commitment
has made SHG the outstanding school it is today. Thank you!
On October 4 th and 5 th Sacred Heart-Griffin students, parents, staff, alumni
and friends celebrated the 20 th anniversary of the joining of Sacred Heart Academy
and Griffin High School with “SHG Works”. But instead of a party, over 200
people helped celebrate by undertaking one of the largest community service
efforts in SHG’s history.
“We thought the year of the anniversary would be a good time to not
just have a party, but to give back to the community,” said “SHG Works”
Chairperson Terry Farmer.
The volunteers worked on over 20 projects throughout
Springfield cleaning up individual yards, painting porches and
homes, conducting minor repairs and assisting individual
homeowners with tasks they are unable to perform themselves.
“For SHG, the idea of giving back is nothing new,” said Sr. Katherine
O’Connor, O.P. “Our commitment to service is deeply ingrained and
central to our longstanding tradition of academic excellence in a
community of faith. As we celebrate this anniversary year, there isn’t a
more fitting celebration than to give back to the community that has so willingly
supported the school over the past two decades.”
The project not only brought out feelings of gratitude in those helped, but also in those who did the helping.
“It was really awesome,” said SHG senior Danielle Ketchum. “I’m glad I got to take part in such a great
experience.”
Mr. Cory of Campus Ministry added that his favorite part of the experience was witnessing the “development
of community in the people working and those they were working for.”
“SHG Works” is proof of the pride that so many have to be a part of the SHG tradition.
On behalf of students, faculty, staff and
families of Sacred Heart-Griffin High School, we
would like to sincerely thank everyone in
Springfield and Central Illinois who helped
make our 50 th Annual Mostaccioli Dinner an
unprecedented success. This year we served
9,614 dinners and raised over $92,000 for
operating costs at SHG.
We are grateful to many: To everyone who
dined with us at the school or took your
meals home; and to everyone who helped
fill our gymnasium with exhibits, took out an advertisement in our
program or bought a raffle ticket. Your generosity and support for the
mission, values and future of our school is greatly appreciated.
And as we move beyond our golden anniversary to the next 50 years,
we, again, are truly humbled by the hard work and dedication of the
hundreds of volunteers who each year tirelessly lend their support to
the success of the Mostaccioli Dinner. The students, parents, alumni
and friends all pitch in to make sure that our customers are happy and
well fed. Thank you to everyone!
Sincerely,
