SHG goes Back to the 80’s
By Kate VonDeBur
News Editor
The spring musical at Sacred Heart-
Griffin is always a big deal. It has a reputation in
the community as a top-notch production and
many students are a part of the production,
whether on, under or behind the stage. A great
number of parents, alumni and other people from
the community are involved as well.
This year’s production is no exception.
A record-setting 95 students make up the cast of
SHG’s Back to the 80’s this March, which will be
the Springfield premiere of the show.
“There are a crazy number of people
in the show! It’s getting kind of insane,” said
sophomore Anna Workman, a member of the
80’s chorus.
To accommodate this extra-large cast,
the Dominican Hall Auditorium’s stage has been
undergoing some changes. First of all, the
orchestra pit will be covered. This will allow
more room onstage for the cast during big dance
numbers and will let them dance farther
downstage, closer to the audience. This also means
the orchestra will be onstage this year instead of
under it.
“I think this will be a fresh new twist,
and it will allow the performers to dance more
toward the front of the stage,” said sophomore
80’s chorus member Catherine Reid.
“I think it will positively affect the
show and make it really modern,” added senior
Cara Workman, who will be portraying Debbie
Fox.
Another change that will have a big
impact on the show is a new director. In previous
years, the SHG spring musical has been directed
by Dr. Stephen Kaplan. However, this year Mr.
Bill Bauser, Jr. will be taking over. Bauser is
currently the Director of Choral Activities at
SHG
“My first response was “no”,” Bauser
said of being asked to direct this year’s show.
“I then spent some time talking with my
colleagues and praying about the situation and
decided that I should direct Back to the 80’s. After
all, it wasn’t fair to the students to not have a
musical!” he said.
Students are please with Bauser’s
decision.
“I have worked with Mr. Bauser before,
and he brings a fun and different look on directing
a show,” said senior Jacob Deters, who will be
playing Michael Feldman.
Senior Connor Fahey, sophomore Steven Grigsby and freshman Danny Guttas run lines for the upcoming SHG spring musical, Back to the 80’s.
The production will run from March 26-29.
“I think he will put some interesting
twists into the musical,” added junior 80’s chorus
member Sean Prideaux.
“Mr. Bauser has done a wonderful job
organizing the musical, especially since he had
such short notice,” said Reid.
Another change from previous years is
the performance schedule. In the past, there have
been performances Friday and Saturday nights
and Sunday afternoon on one weekend and Friday
and Saturday nights the next weekend, for a total
of five performances.
This year there will still be five shows,
but they will all be on one weekend, March 26-
29. There will be one show both Thursday and
Friday night, an afternoon and an evening show
on Saturday and an afternoon show on Sunday.
There will also be two performances for junior
high students on Friday, March 27 .
becoming a P.E. favorite.
“Due to the delays in getting started
this year, we needed the extra time [before the
show],” explained Bauser.
“The leads will really have to take care
of their voices, and there won’t be as many cast
parties,” Reid said about the new schedule.
“Having five shows in four days will
be a huge strain on the cast and crew, but once
we get started the adrenaline will kick in and
when the final performance in over, we’ll wish
we could do it again,” added junior 80’s chorus
member Becca Hanauer.
Many students involved are excited
simply because of the content of the show.
“[The show] is upbeat for kids and
brings back memories for adults,” said junior Katie
Hall, a featured back-up singer. “I think it will be
one of our most popular shows ever.”
“This year’s music is recognizable and
can be enjoyed by all generations,” said junior
Landon Conrad, who will portray Huey Jackson
in the show. “[It] is not only fun, but it has a
modern and energetic feel that all can relate to.”
Check out what others are saying about
LOVE this Valentine’s Day on page 6.
“Many people that grew up in the 80’s
will have a trip down memory lane,” said Bauser.
“They will have the feeling that they are attending
an 80’s rock concert from one of their favorite
artists. Many cast members have commented to
me that their parents know the songs and have
even sung along with them while they are
practicing at home.”
Other cast members are eager to
immerse themselves in 80’s culture.
“Everyone is excited to wear crazy
outfits and big hairstyles,” said Elisabeth Bombell,
a featured back-up singer.
“A lot of people love the 80’s,” said
junior 80’s chorus member Morgan Clem. “The
music is familiar [and] the musical is like a
stereotypical 80’s film about high school students,
and who doesn’t love that?”
Tickets go on sale February 16, 2009,
but they are expected to sell fast. Cast members
will all tell you that this will be a great show that
almost everyone can enjoy.
assures Deters.
Geiger headed to West Point
By Brooke Skowronski
SHG Editor
While most seniors are
preparing to attend a college for the
purpose of enhancing their education,
Sacred Heart Griffin senior, Joe Geiger
Joe Gieger, SHG senior, was recently
given an appointment to West Point
Academy.
is preparing to travel fifty miles outside
of New York to attend one of the
most prestigious military academies in
the history of the United States, West
Point Academy.
The school was founded in
1802 and has been attended by many
well-known leaders such as Grant,
Lee, Macarthur, Eisenhower and
Pershing. The academy not only
prepares students for their careers
through education, but also teaches
through physical and military
programs that help expand the
cadet’s ethical, spiritual and social
development.
Geiger has always thought
about a career in the military and he
knew West Point was the best place
to start.
“I have always thought
about a military career and West
Point is an amazing school,” Said
Geiger
SHG internship program
applications available
Geiger did have doubts
about being appointed. Out of 11,000
students that apply only 1,100 are
appointed. Geiger started applying in
June of 2008 and just found out of
his appointment on December 23,
2008.
“I was very excited, said
Geiger, It is such a selective school.”
Geiger’s plans after
graduation include becoming an
infantry officer and eventually a ranger
battalion. He plans to make a career
out of the army. Going into the
U.S.Army can be a very stress full
experience, but Geiger seems to be
taking it very calmly.
“Things can change so fast
in the world and when I graduate from
the Academy, I won’t know where
exactly I’ll end up,” Geiger admits.
He would like to major in
political sciences once his set
curriculum is finished. Geiger must
report to West Point Academy on June
29, 2009.
Sprinkle T’s are team to beat
By Brian McMahon
That’s right! It’s CYO basketball season.
A season filled with teams from schools in and
around the Springfield area. Fans hope for a new
season of safe, nonviolent, good old fashioned
basketball. That’s not asking for too much, is it?
Definitely not for the highest ranked team in the
league, the Sprinkle T’s.
A team with good moral fibers and
respect for the game, the Sprinkle T’s simply go
out on the court and get the job done. With star
player Steven Cummins on the court, what could
go wrong?
This year’s Cyclone swim team dove in with high expectations.
“We really started working hard as soon as we could get in the water for practice,” said
sophomore Joe Stegeman.
On January 17, Stegeman set a school record in one-meter diving by scoring
205.50 points. The following Wednesday senior Ross Romanelli broke Stegeman’s record in
driving by scoring 226.05 points.
Stegeman wasn’t the only one to shine at the meet against Urbana and Pontiac.
With impressive performances by juniors Chris Ryan, Sam Flessner and Alex Midden, SHG
won every event except the 100-yard breaststroke.
SHG defeated both Urbana and Pontiac with the final team SHG 182, Urbana 77
and Pontiac 57.
This meet has not been much different than the rest of their season.
That following week on January 24 SHG won with 231 points the meet against
O’Fallon 182, Jacksonville 153, Southeast 59, and Taylorville 13.
“I don’t think most people realize, but at least since I’ve been at SHG, our team has
sent someone to state every year,” said Ryan.
With almost thirty guys on the team, all the swimmers are surprisingly close to one
another.
“We support each other by cheering during each other’s events and after they win
their event,” said Ryan.
SHG boys swimming lost their first duel meet this season 112-74 to Peoria Notre
Dame on January 31.
Now at the middle of their season, the meets the boys have been prepping for are
coming.
“City is always a big meet because we have a pretty good rivalry against SHS; it’s
always fun to win that,” said Chris Ryan. Sectionals is our biggest meet because if you win your
event, or qualify in time you make it to State. There’s always a lot of pressure there.”
On January 27, SHG won 163, Springfield 122, and Southeast 32. SHG came in first
in the 200 medley relay, 100 200 400 500 freestyle, 200 IM, 50 freestyle, diving, 100 butterfly
and 100 breaststroke.
As a team, the boys seem undefeated to teams such as Urbana or Pontiac, but
Sectionals will be their test.
“We all are the keys to the team’s success, and we all expect nothing less than State this
season,” said Ryan.
season and are due to fail, just as soon as he goes
up against them.
“As soon as I get on the floor, there
won’t be a Sprinkle T’s, just a Kyle French.”
The T’s best ball handler, junior Mason
Alford, is on the disabled list due to an arm
injury.
“It’s hard to think I’ll be out for the
first couple of weeks of the season,” sniffled
Alford. “The team will need me when we go
against hard teams.”
How exactly did Mason “Mavis
Sixth hour may just seem like any other class during the day to most students at Sacred
Heart - Griffin High School. However, for the members of Coach McDonald’s sixth hour
P.E. class, sixth hour is a magical experience.
What makes this class so great? The answer is simple: badminton.
Anyone who has ever experienced any of Coach Mac’s physical education classes, either in
summer school or during the regular school year, knows that badminton can be a very intense
sport. Senior Ryan Johnson says that he is very lucky to experience the joy of badminton.
“It’s single handedly the greatest sport ever,” said Johnson.
Junior Max Sherman seems to agree with Johnson.
“Its name speaks for itself,” said Sherman.
In Mac’s P.E. classes, the gym is separated into 2 sides: the good side and the bad side. Every
day there is so much pressure to see who gets to compete for the number one spot. Anyone
who makes it to number one gets bragging rights for the rest of the day.
This extreme sport of hitting a shuttlecock, otherwise known as a birdie, can be very tiring.
It requires great strength and skill.
The players must have perfect hand-eye coordination so that they do not miss the birdie.
Also, the players must have speed so that they can run to hit the birdie from any angle of the
court. The sport is tricky but intriguing at the same time. It can even be played with a partner.
“If Jesus would have to choose the greatest thing ever, he would choose badminton,” said
senior Pete Miller.
Coach Mac’s P.E. classes have become famous for the sport.
“Mac has sweet khaki-pant zip-offs,” said Sherman. “He’s a cool dude.”
3
two matches, if their leader hadn’t cast an
enchantment on me.”
Cheer up Mason, life is full of rough
patches.
Seems like the ball is in their court;
otherwise, it will be the biggest upset in CYO
history. The CYO league is full of some pretty
stiff competition this year. With the right
motivation, teamwork and, of course, Steven
Cummins, the Sprinkle T’s will easily earn their
title as 2009 CYO Champions.
“It is pretty easy to motivate each other
knowing you are the best player in the Northern
Hemisphere,” Cummins said coolly. “Just give me
the ball, and I’ll make sure the game ends before
any of the other players begin to cry.”
Junior Kevin Wolf stays focused as he is
about to serve the birdie.

For seven hours a day, we attempt to
be educated. We go from one side of the building
to the other in just five minutes. But while running
from English to the far end, Sahara Desert
basement locker to theology, you realize that the
school is lacking something: life.
Every year around the beginning of
November, the school is decorated for Preview
Night. There are banners with motivational
sayings, cheesy pictures of administration and
teachers, and our ever popular posed pictures of
students enjoying class.
As a photographer, I notice that when
I walk into a room with a camera, everyone
immediately cheers up and poses for the shot
that will decorate the school.
incoming freshman can navigate more easily? The
first couple of weeks of school would be much
Why do we just decorate for those
We have an amazing art department;
Research papers expected yearly
By Jenna Cusumano
It’s that time of year again. It slowly creeps up and then, Bam! It’s due. Yes, it’s
the annual Sacred Heart-Griffin English department research paper. It’s the one thing that
most students dread, but sometimes so do the teachers.
Research papers have always been a part of the SHG curriculum. Research and
factual writing are started in grade school and continue until the end of college. It’s a known
fact that all students will have to write one every year here at SHG.
However, even though it is essential to learn how to write a research paper, it is
also something that causes more anxiety than needed, and most students find them
unnecessary.
“I’m not really a fan of research papers. They take a lot of time and have some
unnecessary work involved,” said junior Samantha Sommer.
Junior Dorian Antonacci seems to agree but sees a positive side to research papers.
“I find them very time consuming, but I know I will have to do them in college so
they are preparing me now.”
Preparation for college seems to be the main reason for research papers at SHG.
Once students get to college, research papers can become a monthly or
even weekly assignment. Since SHG is a college
preparation school, it is necessary to
to let their students get a little creative.
“I try to incorporate all types of writing in
my curriculum,” said sophomore English teacher, Mrs.
Smith. “When students are given a choice between a
PowerPoint or creating a newspaper article, they often
Wikipedia gains bad reputation
Features
There is one student in every class who asks the dreaded question: Why can’t we use
Wikipedia?
It’s a known fact that Wikipedia is not a reliable source for any essay or
research paper. SHG teachers weigh in on why they believe that Wikipedia is one of
the worst sources on the Internet.
Freshman teacher Mr. Seck
“SHG does NOT allow Wikipedia as a source because it is NOT regulated carefully;
therefore, factual information could be incorrect because ANY person, learned or
not, can change information on a given topic.”
Sophomore teacher Mrs. Smith
“Wikipedia is not allowed due to the nature of its content and one’s ability to log on
and change the information without being a reliable source. There have been numerous
contradictions found on that web site alone. When compared to reliable sources, it
simply doesn’t compete. We have a fantastic library with various databases that can
be accessed at home. I would lead students in that direction.”
Junior teacher Mrs. Fuchs
“The English department does not allow Wikipedia simply because it is not a reliable
source; as you know, anyone can change or add information to a Wikipedia site,
making it unreliable for any serious research. The English faculty, besides teaching
MLA process, attempts to teach students the difference between a reliable source
and one that is not. Many other departments in the school have also disallowed this
site for these specific reasons.”
Senior teacher Mr. Golitko
“Wikipedia is not allowed because of its ability to change daily. Students have to
approve all websites through me to make sure it’s valid.”
Research topics linked to history
Students know it’s coming every year, but they rarely know what topic they are
allowed to write about. Here’s a look ahead or a blast to the past for SHG’s
students’ research topics and length requirements from year to year.
If writing isn’t seen as a structured assignment, but a way to express your feelings or
creative side, students may become more interested in the activity.
“I would like to see more creative writing and poetry be taught,” said Sommer.
However, some of the teachers feel that the time to teach these writing styles is
limited and not as important as learning basic writing skills.
“We consistently try to teach good, solid writing,” said junior English teacher
and chair of the English department, Mrs. Fuchs. “How many are going to need to
write poetry in the future? However, every individual is at some point going to be
called upon to write a report, a business document, a paragraph of some kind
which makes sense, is cohesive, and gets a particular point across. Every one of the
English teachers wishes he or she had the time to devote to writing short stories
and poems, but those exercises won’t prepare the majority of our students for
college as well as writing intensive expository compositions.”
Creative writing and poetry are types of writing that can help express
feelings and help channel a person’s creative thinking; yet basic writing skills must be
learned before these other types of writing can be mastered.
For this reason, most students don’t see outside the
forum of structured writing unless they take a
special class, specifically for that type of
writing.
Cyclone Football
SHG’s football program can be summed up in one word: tradition. Not only have the
Cyclones won state three out of the last four years, but it has also had continual success since Sacred
Heart Academy and Griffin merged in 1988. The football program has won nine straight CS8
conference titles and has made fourteen total playoff appearances. In 25 years, SHG has never lost
to Southeast or to Lincoln. Each year, the team is composed of dedicated players who endure
grueling summer practices, intense weight training and daily practices. Also, they’re lead by the most
“winningest” coach in city history, Ken Leonard. Success, dedication and hard work are great
descriptions of SHG’s esteemed football program.
Mr. Lavin
The beloved U.S. history teacher, Mr. Lavin, is a staple of SHG’s academic system. He has
taught at Griffin for nineteen years and at SHG for twenty-one years. Mr. Lavin’s intense interest in
John F. Kennedy’s assassination is no secret. He has obtained many documents to either prove or to
disprove the various theories on this tragedy. Mr. Lavin has placed phone calls and has written letters
to various people throughout his investigation. I am thoroughly convinced that he’ll solve the
mystery one of these days. His class is a place where opinions and questions are always encouraged.
No question is stupid. Even if a student has no interest in history whatsoever, one class with Mr.
Lavin will change his or her mind. The best part of his class, however, is when he tells his students
to “watch your back,” and to “do your reading.” He will continue to inspire and to involve his
students in history as he has done for the past forty years.
Academic excellence
SHG does a great job of preparing students for life after high school which almost always
includes college. AP and honors classes challenge students and allow for higher GPAs. The school also
offers an ACT prep class and has an outstanding counseling department that helps students get
prepared for applying to college. The lessons SHG students will take with them after high school will
prove to be invaluable.
Kairos Every year, seniors and juniors leave SHG school days behind to attend Kairos. The
experience is pretty much indescribable, and those who haven’t been don’t know much. The details
are strictly kept secret. All one needs to know before going is that it can be life-changing. Many people
come out of Kairos very affected. It is a unique retreat that has been held 93 times for SHG students.
An exclusive part of the SHG upperclassman experience is Kairos.
Mostaccioli dinner
This yearly dinner has been around for fifty years. Thousands of people come to either eat
or to help out every year. It is held at West Campus and is the only required fund-raiser for SHG
students. The dinner is one of a kind for the area and is extremely popular. It began as a spaghetti
dinner and outgrew the restaurant in which it was held. Around 10,000 meals are sold and about
$100,000 are raised each year. Some meals are even donated to charity. For the event to be successful
every year, it takes preparation and a lot of community support. The food is delicious too. The dinner
attracts numerous people every year and probably will continue to do so for years to come.
Cookies
The SHG cafeteria is known for its delicious chocolate chip and sugar cookies. Each one is
intoxicatingly soft and gooey. They were even loved in 1988 as seen in the yearbook. The chocolate
chip variety has just the right amount of chips which makes it almost impossible to take a bite
without it being filled with chocolate. The sugar cookies are delectable and intensely sweet. The best
part of SHG’s appetizing treats is the fact that they can’t be found at the same top quality anywhere
else.
Charley’s Pizza
One Friday every month, SHG students enjoy Charley’s pizza. Although the cafeteria offers
normal pizza every day, Charley’s beats the rectangular daily option. They’re personal sized mini pizzas
that only come with pepperoni. The crust and sauce are delightful and the special seasoning adds to
the overall taste. There is no better experience for an SHG student than walking into the cafeteria on
a Friday and being surprised by the entrancing smell of Charley’s pizza.

each other and the others wedding plans. It’s a race to see which one can
destroy the other’s wedding day. It’s definitely cruel, but it does draw quite
a few laughs along the way.
Bride Wars may not end up being the best chick flick of 2009, but
it surely depicts the real world of girls. They can be best friends one minute
and be hating each other the next. Bride Wars can almost be compared to
the more mature of Mean Girls. Anyone would be surprised with the kind
of cruel acts these girls play on each other throughout the movie. This does
tend to drag the movie out longer than expected.
The storyline for an amazing movie is there. The main plot is
what it’s like to lose your best friend. However, the movie lacked any kind
of substance to get to the heart of the film. Bride Wars tries to intertwine
too many genres of movies into one story. It’s almost as if they couldn’t
decide to make it a romantic comedy, a movie about friendship or a comical
movie.
The main part of the movie is about Liv and Emma trying to
destroy each other’s weddings. The secondary plot is the faltering relationship
between Emma and her fiance. The only time the movie shows any depth
or heart is when Emma and Liv realize the friendship they are missing.
Hudson and Hathaway are wonderful actresses in their own right. However,
they did not have enough chemistry on screen for the audience to actually
feel like they were lifelong friends. Maybe it was lacking depth or just the
two working together. But whatever it was, Bride Wars was just an adequate
movie. It had potential to be great, but it was lacking in heart and in
substance.
New theater thriller produces screams . . . of laughter
Like every bad movie, it had at least
one high point, the end. In some movies people
clap at the end because it was so amazing? At The
Unborn, everyone clapped because it was over.
This movie would be a perfect date
movie. It would give the couple lots of things to
say on the ride home with no chances of an
awkward silence.
“So… that movie… nice storyline?
No... uhh perfect camera views? No… maybe
uhm so... that movie…”
But, because these actors have so much
talent, a sequel should be made. Maybe the sequel
could help them regain their fans respect and
give them another chance to make an actual horror
film.
