1 SHG ANNUAL REPORT
Dear Friends,
Fall 2005 found Sacred Heart-Griffin students generously responding to the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
The students collected over a thousand dollars to send to New Orleans along with emergency supplies and
clothing. When the tornadoes struck Springfield in March, SHG students were among those helping to clean up
devastated neighborhoods and giving donations to the local Red Cross.
Generosity is a hallmark of the Sacred Heart-Griffin community of faith. As you read through this report, you
will witness the incredible generosity of so many who contribute to SHG in various ways. Sacred Heart-Griffin
couldn’t exist without the support we receive from our alumni, parents-present and past-and friends.
Each person listed in this report is an important part of SHG.
Along with the tragedies in our country and city, ingrained in our memory is February 23, the day we came to
school and heard the sad news that Justin Buscher, one of our sophomores, had died in an automobile accident
the night before. Through our community of faith we supported one another. We shared our love and support
with the Buscher family, and our faith was strengthened by their deep faith and concern for us. Our belief that
we are made to live with God forever in heaven was a great consolation during this difficult time.
Academic excellence and excellence in all areas abounded at Sacred Heart-Griffin this year. Among our many
achievements, I note the following two: For the first time in SHG’s history the Science Olympiad team won a
third place trophy, and the football team brought home a State Championship.
A milestone in Sacred Heart-Griffin’s history is the departure of Father Pisors after 44 years of service to
Griffin High School and Sacred Heart-Griffin High School. Having served the Catholic community in providing
secondary education for 76 years, the Viatorians will no longer have a presence at SHG. We treasure the
partnership we have shared with the Clerics of St. Viator.
We also treasure the partnership we have with all of you who so generously support Sacred Heart-Griffin High
School. In the name of the faculty, staff and students of SHG, thank you and God bless you!
Sincerely,
Sister Katherine O’Connor, O.P.
President
Mission Statement
Sacred Heart-Griffin is a Catholic, Dominican high school that welcomes a
diverse student population to pursue academic excellence in a community of faith.
1 SHG ANNUAL REPORT
Dear Friends,
It has been my pleasure to be a member of the SHG Advisory Board and to serve as
Chairperson during the 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 academic years. This fall, I will pass the
torch to Mrs. Bridget Lamont who will very capably serve as your chairperson for the
current school year.
I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for all you do for Sacred Heart-Griffin!
Volunteerism is such a vital part of who we are; we know we are a stronger institution
because of the involvement of our parents, alumni and friends.
Volunteers help us in the areas of academics, extracurricular activities, athletics and
fundraising. The SHG Advisory Board also plays a vital role in providing service to the
school. Board members provide advice and recommendations on school policy, strategic
planning, tuition and budget in support of SHG’s mission as an institution of faith and
learning. In total, it takes all of us working together to make SHG the vibrant school that
it is today.
The success of Sacred Heart Academy, Cathedral Boys, Griffin and now Sacred Heart-
Griffin has always depended on the combined efforts of us, the community. I believe this
rich tradition continues to benefit all who become involved.
Sincerely,
Marsha Narmont
Chairperson, Sacred Heart-Griffin Advisory Board
A Fond Farewell
1 SHG ANNUAL REPORT
After 44 years of teaching at Griffin High School and SHG,
Father Thomas Pisors, 73, decided it was time to turn in his grade
book.
“Everyday that I’ve taught, I’ve enjoyed. I just like teaching a lot,
but one of the more rewarding things is to see many of the former
students become so successful. I go over to Springfield Clinic for
most of my doctor appointments, and in Springfield Clinic they
have a corridor that’s filled with photographs, of all the doctors in
Springfield Clinic, and a lot of them I’ve taught,” noted Fr. Pisors.
“I’ve gotten a lot of communication from grads who are long out
of high school, many of whom said looking back that I was the best teacher they ever had
even including college, so that’s wonderful.”
Colleagues such as science department chair Donna Brayfield and history teacher Tom
Lavin have also noted the influence Fr. Pisors has had on their lives.
“It has been a true honor to work with Fr. Pisors,” said Brayfield. “SHG is losing an
educational legend with his retirement. When I tell people I meet where I work, many of
them will ask about him. . . I am going to miss my friend, colleague and mentor.”
Lavin also noted the Fr. Pisors’ influence goes beyond classroom lessons.
“I have learned a lot from him, but the one thing he taught me the most is that what we
do with our lives is far more important than what we possess, and that if a person is good
at doing one thing and does it in the service of others, he or she has lived a good life. That
describes Fr. Pisors for me,” Lavin said.
Pisors’ departure marks the end of 76 years of the Viatorian’s presence at SHG.
On June 4, friends, family, former students and colleagues gathered in the SHG
auditorium to thank the Viatorians and Fr. Pisors for their role in supporting
Catholic education. After Mass was celebrated, Fr. Pisors was made an honorary member
of the SHG Hall of Fame.
Although the celebration marked an end to a legend’s career at SHG, Fr. Pisors will
be remembered as long as SHG stands. A plaque outside of room 217 honors Fr. Pisors
commitment by dedicating the room as “The Fr. Pisors Physics Lab”.

1 SHG ANNUAL REPORT
In March, 2006, a cast of 80 of Sacred Heart-Griffin’s most talented
young actors, actresses and singers moved audiences with the
“Fiddler on the Roof’s” humor, warmth and honesty. The universal
theme of tradition cut across barriers of race, class, nationality
and religion, leaving audiences in tears of laughter, joy and sadness.
A sincere thank you to the many students, parents, volunteers
and underwriters who shared in the excitement and imagination
of this year’s musical. There are many expenses associated with
a production of this scale, including the rights to the show, sets,
costumes, makeup and orchestra. Thank you for seeing this need
and supporting SHG.
SHG Scholarships
Scholarship Support
Comes in Many Ways
Each year, through the generosity of others, numerous individuals and businesses contribute toward the SHG scholarship
program. The annual Alumni Scholarship Scramble golf outing also serves as a funding source for the scholarship program.
volunteerism
Our scholarships are funded through many avenues. One way is through the spirit of volunteerism. For example, John Eck, Jr.,
‘83 and Chris Perrin have played a vital role in the SHG scholarship program. From 1996-2005, they served as co-chairs of the
Scholarship Scramble golf outing, held in mid-June at Piper Glen Golf Club.
For 10 consecutive golf outings, John and Chris saw dawn break the day of each big outing, taking care of all the last minute
details like making sure the prizes were ready to go and the appropriate sponsor signage was on the course. Their day ended
well past dark, after all of the other golfers had gone home. This year, they passed the torch to Ben Call ‘93 and Jeff Tatarek ’82
who now serve as the golf outing’s co-chairs and John and Chris have begun a new chapter in their lives.
John and Chris are now first-time freshmen parents. Sons Peter Eck and Carter Perrin are both freshmen in the SHG Class of
2010. Both John and Chris’ volunteer spirit didn’t end with the golf outing. Along with wives Lynn (DeSalle) Eck, ‘83 and Amy
(Segatto) Perrin, ‘83, they are now serving as co-chairs for the SHG Mega-Raffle.
While John and Chris were at the helm of the Scholarship Scramble, more than $210,000 was raised for student scholarships.
We thank them for their dedication and commitment to SHG!
Ed Goetz
Jerry & Hazel Konrad
on their 50th Wedding Anniversary
Honoring the Memory of a Loved One
Scholarship support can also come in the form of remembering a loved one or
honoring someone on a memorable occasion such as a birthday, retirement or an
anniversary.
This year, the Edward Goetz Memorial Scholarship Endowment was established
by Ed’s daughter and son-in-law, Dr. James and Katie (Goetz) ‘82 Ambrose. Ed
Goetz graduated from Cathedral Boys School with the class of 1948. He was
deeply committed to St. Agnes parish and gave his time and talent to various SHG
projects. He was a life long member of the Elks Club, both locally and nationally.
Ed also served as one of our top Mega Raffle ticket sellers each year.
Ed’s family wanted his memory to live on so they established this special scholarship
to be awarded each year to a graduating St. Agnes 8th grade student who
demonstrates a commitment to providing service to others. The scholarship was
awarded this year for the first time.
Remembering Ed and the service he gave to others is a fitting way to keep his
memory alive. He will long be remembered by the SHG and St. Agnes families
and will continue to touch the lives of the young men and women who will receive
this scholarship in the many years to come.
Remembering SHG through a
Planned Gift
Jerome “Jerry” Konrad was a 1934 graduate of Cathedral Boys High School who
never forgot about the benefits of his Catholic education. Jerry died in 1997 at
the age of 82. In June, his widow, Hazel, passed. The Konrads’ wanted to help
young people receive a Catholic education, so they remembered SHG in their
estate plans. The Jerome and Hazel Konrad Scholarship Endowment will soon
be established and each year scholarships will be awarded to students who take
their studies seriously and who demonstrate financial need.
The couple lived in Springfield where Jerry worked as a union electrician and
Hazel held several secretarial positions throughout her working years. The couple
had no children of their own, but now, because of their generosity, hundreds of
SHG students and their families will be touched by Jerry and Hazel’s caring spirit
and their dedication to Catholic education.
How You Can Help
Many times, individuals would like to help but they don’t know exactly what they
can do to make a difference. The SHG scholarship program is a perfect way to
help a student while at the same time, honoring or remembering a love one.
If you are interested in providing scholarship support to a student
who demonstrates financial need, please call the Advancement Office
at (217) 787-9732 for more information.
