Although the primary responsibility of education rests with the parents, all of us at SHG - educators, students, parents, staff - are called to guide the students in pursuit of the truth through a process of lifelong learning. We assist the development of talents and encourage students to realize their potential so that together we may grow in faith, knowledge, and reason and choose to serve others in Jesus’ name. While we influence one another in many areas of our lives, our primary responsibility is the pursuit of truth through a program of academic excellence. • As a Catholic high school, SHG is dedicated to the truth of Christian values as proclaimed in the Gospel; as fostered in a Christian community of faculty, students, parents, and staff; and as witnessed by service to the larger community. • As an academic institution, SHG assists each student in achieving a level of academic excellence commensurate with his/her ability by offering an appropriate and challenging educational and cocurricular program. • As a community of faith, the students, faculty, and staff of SHG cooperate with one another, the parents, area schools, and the local community to develop programs and activities that assist the student spiritually, intellectually, physically, emotionally, and socially in his/her search for truth. • As Christians responsible to the future, SHG fosters independent thinking, the acceptance of responsibility, and the exercise of leadership through service so that the reality of justice and charity, lived in truth, may imbue our global society. 2 3 4-5 6 7 8 9 9-19 20-23 24-25 26-27 28
From the President, 2 Service Prayer Study Community Dear Friends, SHG Works! During this 20 th anniversary year of Sacred Heart-Griffin High School we have celebrated that SHG Works. The first weekend of last October over 200 students, parents, alumni, faculty and staff blanketed Springfield to provide service to those in need. The twenty projects completed included cleaning up individual yards, painting porches and homes, installing carbon monoxide detectors in homes of the elderly, and working on two Habitat for Humanity houses. In March over 70 members of the musical cast, assisted by parents and staff helped a homeowner clean his yard to avoid being fined by the city. Giving service is an integral part of life at SHG! Helping to keep the pillar of prayer and the Catholic, Dominican dimension of Sacred Heart-Griffin in the forefront is a major goal of the OP Teens. Each morning a student leads the school community in prayer over the P.A. They pray for needs in the Church, in our world and in our country. Throughout the day each class period begins with prayer. Once a week students and staff have the opportunity to attend Mass in our school chapel. Both faculty and students find consolation in being able to ask publicly for God’s assistance in difficult times and to praise and thank God for blessings received. Praying together and supporting one another during difficult and happy times is a cherished part of life at SHG! Academic excellence and the Dominican pillar of study go hand in hand at Sacred Heart-Griffin. Our recently renovated library is equipped with fifteen new computers, allowing students to conduct research under the professional guidance of our librarian who introduces them to the newest sources for online research. Research papers written by all levels of English classes prepare them for the research that will be required in college. Again this year, students from the science and math departments were invited to compete on the state level. Our athletic and music programs gained state recognition, showing that excellence and study go beyond the classroom - they are part of the culture of SHG! Community of faith is more than a tagline at Sacred Heart-Griffin. Upperclassmen take time out of their summer vacation to plan for and to be present with the freshmen at their orientation. Veteran students help the freshmen feel at home by giving them a preview of what to expect in various situations. When classes start, the seniors are on hand to help freshmen deal with their lockers and to greet them by name when they see them in the halls. Community of faith permeates the halls of SHG and lets students know “all are welcome!” The generosity of donors like you helps to make SHG the outstanding school it is.
