c. Training Course <strong>on</strong> Composite Carp Culture<br />

This ten-week RLCI course was held <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> 1 September to 15 November 1986 with 21<br />

trainees <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> ten countries sp<strong>on</strong>sored by <strong>NACA</strong>.<br />

d. Training Course <strong>on</strong> Marine Finfish Cage Culture<br />

A total of 21 participants <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> nine countries attended this six-week training course,<br />

c<strong>on</strong>ducted in Singapore <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> 1 September to 11 October 1986. All participants were<br />

sp<strong>on</strong>sored by <strong>NACA</strong>. This was <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong>ly <strong>NACA</strong>-sp<strong>on</strong>sored short training course<br />

organized in a n<strong>on</strong>-member country.<br />

e. Training Course <strong>on</strong> Mass Seed Producti<strong>on</strong> of Chinese Carps<br />

This five-and-a-half week course was held <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> 20 April to 27 May 1987 in China with 16<br />

participants <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> seven countries. Ten of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> participants were sp<strong>on</strong>sored by IDRC, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

remaining six by <strong>NACA</strong>. The course was c<strong>on</strong>ducted partly at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> RLCC in Wuxi and<br />

partly at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Pearl River Fisheries Research Institute in Guangzhou. The course<br />

objective was to enable <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> participants to acquire adequate <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>oretical and practical<br />

knowledge of mass producti<strong>on</strong> of Chinese carp fry and fingerlings for stocking purposes,<br />

including <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> biological basis of breeding of cultivated carps, culture of brood fish,<br />

development of sex glands, artificial breeding technology, rearing of fry and fingerlings,<br />

seed transport and disease c<strong>on</strong>trol.<br />

f. Training Course <strong>on</strong> Aquaculture Ec<strong>on</strong>omics and Socio-Ec<strong>on</strong>omics<br />

This course was to train aquaculturists, and to c<strong>on</strong>duct social and ec<strong>on</strong>omic research<br />

analysis of aquaculture producti<strong>on</strong>. It included micro-and macro-ec<strong>on</strong>omics, covering<br />

both producti<strong>on</strong> and marketing aspects, as well as social interacti<strong>on</strong>s. The course was<br />

jointly c<strong>on</strong>ducted by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> RLCT and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Kasetsart University in Bangkok <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> 7 May to 5<br />

June 1987. The 22 participants, <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> 11 countries, were all sp<strong>on</strong>sored by <strong>NACA</strong>.<br />

g. Training Course <strong>on</strong> Envir<strong>on</strong>mental M<strong>on</strong>itoring and Ulcerative Syndrome in Fish<br />

This four-week course (3–30 November 1987) was organized by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> RLCT. All <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> 18<br />

participants <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> 11 countries were sp<strong>on</strong>sored by <strong>NACA</strong>. This prepared participants in<br />

research <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> relati<strong>on</strong>ships between envir<strong>on</strong>ment and ulcerative disease syndrome in<br />

fish, with emphasis to upgrade <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> participants' technical skill in water chemistry and<br />

analysis, design of sampling programmes, identify comm<strong>on</strong> fish pathogens and<br />

symptoms, and interpret <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> relati<strong>on</strong>ships between envir<strong>on</strong>mental factors and fish<br />

disease occurrence. All <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> participants had subsequently initiated a regi<strong>on</strong>al research<br />

programme <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> subject.<br />

h. Training Course <strong>on</strong> Backyard Shrimp Hatchery Operati<strong>on</strong> and Management<br />

Six sessi<strong>on</strong>s <strong>on</strong> this highly intensive <strong>on</strong>-<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>-job training were c<strong>on</strong>ducted between April<br />

and November 1988 by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Department of Fisheries of Thailand through its<br />

Brackishwater Aquaculture Divisi<strong>on</strong>. The first five sessi<strong>on</strong>s were held over 26 days and<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last over 23 days. Each sessi<strong>on</strong> had two trainees, except <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last, which had four. All<br />

14, who came <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> eight countries of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> regi<strong>on</strong>, were sp<strong>on</strong>sored by <strong>NACA</strong>.<br />

i. Training Course <strong>on</strong> Aquaculture for Ec<strong>on</strong>omists<br />

Twenty participants <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> 15 countries of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> regi<strong>on</strong> took part in this three-week course<br />

held at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> RLCT in November 1989. All <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> trainees were sp<strong>on</strong>sored by <strong>NACA</strong>.
