Global Leadership Film Series<br />
The Global Leadership Interview Series is a new, ongoing<br />
project of the UNU/ILA in which men <strong>and</strong> women in<br />
global leadership positions share the opinions, attitudes<br />
<strong>and</strong> ideas that have shaped their approach to leadership<br />
practice. Their views are presented in video documentary<br />
form with accompanying booklets. In 2002, UNU/ILA<br />
produced three videos <strong>and</strong> accompanying booklets,<br />
featuring interviews with Juan Somavia, Director-General<br />
of the International Labour Organization; Gro Harlem<br />
Brundtl<strong>and</strong>, Director-General of the World Health<br />
Organization; <strong>and</strong> Mike Moore, former Director-General<br />
of the World Trade Organization.<br />
in Tokyo to audiences of invitees from diplomatic,<br />
governmental, political, academic <strong>and</strong> business circles <strong>and</strong><br />
the general public. On 21 March, former US President<br />
William J. Clinton delivered the 3rd U Thant Distinguished<br />
Lecture, speaking on the topic of “Globalization.” On 1<br />
October, the 1970 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Dr.<br />
Norman E. Borlaug, delivered the 4th U Thant<br />
Distinguished Lecture on “Agriculture <strong>and</strong> Peace: The<br />
Role of Science <strong>and</strong> Technology in Feeding Humankind in<br />
the 21st Century.<br />
On 29 May, His Excellency Dr. Han Seung-soo,<br />
President of the <strong>United</strong> <strong>Nations</strong> General Assembly,<br />
presented a lecture at UNU Centre on “The Role of the<br />
<strong>United</strong> <strong>Nations</strong> in a Globalizing World.”<br />

Opening Ceremony of UNU/CRIS, 23 April, Bruges,<br />
Tokyo Roundtables<br />
In 2002, UNU/IAS launched a Tokyo Roundtable series<br />
with the aim of raising the visibility of the Institute <strong>and</strong><br />
contributing to Japanese society at large by providing<br />
information on global issues related to UNU/IAS research<br />
areas. Six Tokyo Roundtable events were held during the<br />
year: “Bonn Guidelines on ABS,” “Climate Change <strong>and</strong><br />
Implementation of Kyoto Protocol,” “New Consumers <strong>and</strong><br />
Sustainability Dilemma,” “Post WSSD: Way Forward for<br />
Global Change Research,” “Youth Culture in Japan” <strong>and</strong><br />
“Ethical Issues of Science <strong>and</strong> Technology for the New<br />
Millennium.”<br />
Major Public Lectures<br />
The U Thant Distinguished Lecture Series, co-organized<br />
by UNU Centre <strong>and</strong> UNU/IAS, is a forum that presents<br />
eminent thinkers <strong>and</strong> world leaders speaking on the role of<br />
the <strong>United</strong> <strong>Nations</strong> in addressing the challenges facing the<br />
world’s peoples <strong>and</strong> nations in the twenty-first century. In<br />
2002, two U Thant Distinguished Lectures were presented<br />
