Principal’s Reflections I often ask myself what is the reputation of Kinross Wolaroi School What do people think of KWS, both within and outside our community, and how do I, as Principal, gauge a response to these questions In my view, our reputation is based on numerous factors, not least of which is the ‘quality’ of our students. This quality is reflected not just by their achievements, but also by the manner in which they conduct themselves within and outside the KWS community. It’s also determined by our ability to ‘value add’ to the student, in order to craft the overall skill level and appeal of KWS students as they move through life and into careers. The quality of our teaching is also at the heart of our reputation. This is inextricably linked to staff qualifications and their willingness to engage in ongoing professional development. Other factors affecting our reputation include our focus on student welfare and wellbeing, our values of knowledge, friendship and integrity, the quality of the relationships fostered between staff, students and parents, and our students’ achievements across all areas of school life. This list is by no means exhaustive. While there are many other factors that contribute to reputation, these represent aspects that must be working well within a school to ensure a notable reputation. Our feedback from Year 12 parent exit surveys over the past few years, benchmarked against 14 leading independent schools throughout NSW, Queensland and Western Australia, indicates we have a reputation which exceeds all other schools in the survey. We excelled in four areas, equalling or surpassing all schools in the survey. These areas were: Overall reputation; Overall satisfaction with the Academic Program; Overall expectations of KWS met or exceeded, and School of first choice. While I feel extremely proud to receive this wonderful feedback, I know there are aspects we must improve upon and others that we need to fine-tune and enhance. Our work in education is never finished. We are always striving to provide the best opportunities for students; this means reviewing our academic programs to ensure they cater for the needs of our students, updating and refining our diverse co-curricular program to ensure the sports on offer, coupled with our music and cadets programs, all continue to appeal and be of benefit to our students. In the end, a school’s reputation is a function of how content and fulfilled its students are. The continuing positive feedback I receive indicates KWS students are challenged by their school experience, which results in a school environment of which we can be justifiably proud, with a reputation which supports our approach.
