From the
Editor-in-Chief
No doubt, most of our Expatriate readership has gone through the task of fi nding
suitable housing for their families. The mission is complicated by several
components: the need to fi nd housing that matches standards of the home country;
the cost of such housing; fi nding a reliable agent; interpreting the agreement; and settling
with a landlord who besides having a mission to make money, also has your interests in
mind. For some expatriates the experience would have been a nightmare and for others it
would have been quite pleasant. In this edition we examine the ‘Problems and Prospects
of Expat Housing’ in India. You’ll read that while ‘problems’ still do crop up, it seems that
‘prospects’ are steadily improving.
In this edition you’re given a glimpse into the work of two expatriates who have been
keeping the tradition of Indian pottery alive since they launched their pottery unit in
Pondicherry thirty-seven years ago. It’s remarkable what they have achieved since then.
We also celebrate the ‘Unsung Heroes;’ these are the expatriates who give back to Indian
society by volunteering at various humanitarian projects. And then there are the refl ections
of a Delhi-based Expat psychologist who discusses how to make the most of the Expat
experience. Having resided in four foreign countries in her adult life, she certainly has
lived her topic.
The Festival time of year in India is upon us again. Join us as we guide you through the
origins, signifi cance and rituals related to Diwali and Dussera. The views of a ten-year-old
Indian student on the use of fi recrackers may be surprising; then again, maybe not, given
the changing attitudes of the young towards the environment. Several Expats also share
their Diwali experiences.
There is plenty more to ponder between the covers of this edition. For instance have you
seen the Ajanta and Ellora caves yet Our Expat travel writer suggests that they are well
worth a visit before departing India. And for those of you living in the capital, there is a
lot to see right on your doorstep. Case in point: Have you ever taken a ‘monumental’ tour
of Delhi We provide the stimulus herein. Then of course kids@expat provides lots of
activities to keep the youngsters occupied.
Until next time, happy reading.
