OH! CALCUTTA’S
RARE CUISINE.
Indian cuisine served in restaurants all over is
more of the North Indian variety. Oh! Calcutta,
the chain of restaurants in Mumbai, Pune and
Delhi, is a tribute to cuisine from Kolkatta,
which is part of East India. Oh! Calcutta has
brought Bengali cuisine into the limelight all over
the country.
The raison d’etre of Oh! Calcutta is to celebrate
the centuries-old cuisine of Calcutta. Oh! Calcutta
recreates dishes from the old recipes selected
through painstaking research in libraries, old clubs
and grandmothers’ dairies. The blend of Bengali,
Nawabi and British Raj fl avours born in this historical
city has inspired Oh! Calcutta’s rare cuisine.
Dining at Oh! Calcutta is not only a culinary delight
but also a journey into a little piece of the by gone
era – the rich amalgam of Afgan, Continental and
Bengali cuisines.
Whenever I visit Oh! Calcutta for a meal I make sure
I starve throughout the day, for there are so many
dishes that are a ‘must try’ there.
For the non vegetarians, do not miss out on the
Daab Chingri (prawns served in a tender coconut
shell, creamy and velvety with coconut), Bhapa Hilsa
(smoked fi sh), or kosha mangsho (lamb curry) with
Restaurant Details:
Oh! Calcutta is currently present in Mumbai, Pune
and Delhi, with a Bangalore unit to be opened
shortly.
Meal for two: Rs.1200 (Approx.)
Timings: 12 pm to 3 pm, 7 pm to midnight
Luchi (Indian bread). For the Vegetarians, dishes
like Chanar Mailu (Cottage cheese preparation),
Mochar Chop (Vegetable fry) or Dhokar Dalna can’t
go wrong.
If you really want to taste authentic Bengali cuisine
then you may give the restaurant’s buffet a miss.
Get the manager or a friend to help you to select
the dishes from the menu. At times the food can get
quite spicy so you may wish to ask them to tone it
down while ordering.
A Bengali meal is never complete without its mouth
watering desserts. In desserts ‘Mishti Doi’, ‘Bhapa
Sandesh’ and ‘Malpua’ are a must try.
Oh! Calcutta is a cultural and gastronomic experience
fuelled by fond memories and bona fide
recipes. The décor is inviting, mostly done in white
and fi lled with images from Kolkata. Portraits of the
renowned Indian fi lm maker Satyajit Roy, Bengali
fi lm stars, Mohanbagan and East Bengal footballers
are on the walls, and bookshelves displaying works
of Rabindranath Tagore, Bankim Chandra absorb
the spirit and essence of Kolkata to the fullest.
Dining at Oh! Calcutta has always been a delightful
experience for me. Being a Bengali myself, Oh!
Calcutta is a treat for me.
