Sometimes, though, a huge hardback book full of folktales may be a bit intimidating! That’s why the ‘Under the Banyan’ series brought out by Tulika Publishers is ideal, particularly for young readers (age 4 and up). They are individual tales from different states of India. Each one has been beautifully illustrated in styles inspired by traditional crafts of the region where the story is set. This means every book has a unique feel to it. ‘Unprincess!’ has three stories with three bold and spirited heroines. Each tackles her own fears and shortcomings with plenty of pluck. The ‘unprincess’ Kavita uses common sense to take on an annoying giant. Sayoni realises she has the power to combat nightmares and Urmila the Ultimate uses her ugliness for the benefit of society at large! Manjula Padmanabhan’s stories are laugh-out-loud hilarious and you have the additional bonus of her own wild and quirky illustrations on almost every page. A mustread for every aspiring ‘unprincess’! [Unprincess! by Manjula Padmanabhan, Puffi n Rs.135] Jim Corbett was not only a famous hunter of man-eating tigers but also one of India’s earliest conservationists as we know them now. What is less well known is that he was a fund of stories about the dense jungles and teeming wildlife of Northern India. The Second Oxford India Illustrated Corbett is a collection of some of these stories specially adapted for the young reader. Spine-tingling tales of man-eaters, an entertaining tale about Corbett’s faithful hunting dog, an intriguing story of an Indian Robin Hood.... accompanied by captivating illustrations; it’s a beautifully produced book which you will read and re-read as it talks of a way of life that has all but vanished. [The Second Oxford India Illustrated Corbett, Oxford University Press Rs.295] Raising Money for Childrens’ Charities in India Early in 2006 a group of enthusiastic parents with children at the International School of Hyderabad, kicked off a project to write a travel guide to India especially for children, in order to raise money for children’s charities in India. After a lot of hard work, the travel guide was published in November 2006. The travel guide, called “Kids’ Travel and Activity Guide to India”, is unique. It aims to entertain and educate children as they travel around the major destinations in the country. The book has been cleverly written and is beautifully illustrated. The travel guide is for sale in India at INR 300. After covering costs, the sale proceeds are donated to bona fi des children’s charities in India. Donations have already been made to some village schools in Andhra Pradesh. The book has been a success story, with over 1500 copies sold to date and lots of enthusiastic feedback.
