The fascination of colour Farewell, drab grey! When you think of wall systems, the first thing that comes to mind is usually grey, unattractive partition walls - covered with important notices around desks - in the vast expanses of gigantic open-plan offices, or "lonely", inconspicuous, free-standing walls in the reception areas of companies or hotels. However, there are also more elegant creative solutions. The future holds the promise of designs that are both colourful and stylish. Combined with optimised OPTOTRONIC ECG and control systems, LINEARlight Colormix LED modules permit variable light solutions for wall systems. Creativity points the way The innovative partition walls were developed as part of a joint research project by the Baier & Demmelhuber engineering office, the Faculty of Building Realisation of Munich University of Technology, OS- RAM and other industry partners. In the framework of the project, LINEARlight Colormix LED modules were integrated in flexible mobile walls made of solid glass. The result is wall systems that are not only colourful, but also have an elegant look. The partition walls consist of sheets of glass that are sandblasted or coated on one side and mounted in an invisible OSRAM ECG-SPOT 2/2004 4 Variable wall elements using the LED Colormix system frame. The glass sheets and the frames are bonded together to produce a rigid composite element. The "Unicon" connectors give the whole thing a special "twist": on the one hand, they can be used to join the individual elements to each other. On the other hand, they are also designed to transmit and carry all kinds of media, such as electricity, data, water or heat, from element to element. Light-emitting diodes cleverly integrated The coloured LED light strips are integrated in the lower area of the space between the sheets of glass, illuminating the elements in bright colours. The LED modules are accessible via a small inspection port on the side of the frame. Thanks to their small dimensions, the OPTOTRONIC operating and control components can also easily be accommodated in the element frame. Control trilogy Three options are available for controlling the wall system: • OT RGB 3-Channel DIM is a 1…10 V control unit for individual control of the three basic colours red, green and blue. Partition walls with LED systems offer new perspectives of the RGB LED modules can, for example, be controlled and dimmed by remote control or via a permanently installed controller. • The OT RGB Sequencer 3channel PWM sequencer creates the dynamic colour change of RGB LED modules. The speed of the sequence can be controlled via the 1…10 V control input. If required, a specific colour can also be set permanently in this way. Fig. 2. The wall systems look totally unspectacular when unlit The two 1...10 V control units are used on the secondary side of the power supplies, i.e. wired between the OPTOTRO- NIC control gear and the LED modules. • The third control option, the OT DALI 25/220-240/24 RGB, permits the integration of LED modules in DALI light control systems. Mains voltage converter, DALI interface and PWM controller are integrated in a single unit in this case, i.e. one unit is used for both operation and control. Via the DALI input, three output channels can be addressed and thus controlled individually via DALI.

The operating element likewise has an elegant appearance As a result, innovative, dynamic solutions are created in a wide variety of ways and integrated into the interior design of the building. Fascinating appearance as a result The partition walls with integrated LED modules create fascinating colours with a futuristic look. These unusual lighting effects enhance any office and make for a motivating working climate. In addition, the luminous elements display remarkable advantages, not only in terms of economy and function, but also from an aesthetic point of view. At Light+Building 2004, the coloured-light walls received the "Architecture and Techno- logy" Innovation Award for their functionality and innovative design. The jury specifically praised the integral achievement of all the partners involved in the project. The main practical advantages of the wall system are seen as being the ease of assembly and the high degree of prefabrication, despite the wide variety of elements.
