Water make a splash 18 Sailing in Christchurch Harbour Christchurch’s spectacular location at the edge of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site and on the shores of its own natural harbour makes it the perfect place for watersports enthusiasts of all ages. Local sailing clubs regularly host national regattas, providing lots of colour out at sea throughout the year and windsurfers travel from all over the country to enjoy the wave sailing at Avon Beach and to compete in national championships. Sea breezes can create wind-blown waves within a few hours so wherever there is a wave you will find surfers and the Highcliffe beaches offer excellent conditions for riding all through the year. Body boarding has become popular for all ages and it’s easy to learn very quickly to paddle out through the surf, turn around and catch your first wave even on the small summer waves. Skimboards are perfect for catching a ride at the water’s edge even on a flat day and the best rides are at low tides. Just throw the board down in the shallow water, leap on and ride along the water’s edge. If you are bringing your own boat or watercraft there are public slipways with good parking close to the town centre and inside the harbour near the Run where the harbour meets the sea.
