Please note that ratings may change throughout the year. VisitBritain and the AA grade accommodation providers use a set of common quality standards. The aim is to make accommodation standards easy to understand and to give you confidence that establishments meet the standard you expect. All properties are visited annually by trained, impartial assessors and the higher the number of stars awarded to the accommodation, the greater the quality experience at that establishment. Any advertisement displaying “Rating Applied For” indicates that at the time of going to print, the establishment has applied for but not received a quality rating for 2013. Hotels Encompasses the categories of Hotel & Small Hotel. Hotels have a minimum of 6 bedrooms but are more likely to have 20+ rooms. Small hotels have a maximum of 20 bedrooms and are likely to be personally run. 1 star: All rooms ensuite or private 2 star: Dinner usually available every evening 3 star: All rooms ensuite. Room service also available 4 star: 24 hour room service and 50% of rooms have a bath and shower 5 star: A number of permanent suites and enhanced services e.g. concierge, full afternoon tea Guest Accommodation Includes the categories Guest Accommodation, Bed & Breakfast, Guest House & Inn. Guest accommodation encompasses everything from one-room bed and breakfasts to larger establishments which may offer dinner and may be licensed. It tends to be personally run by the owners. Sometimes access to guest accommodation can be restricted during the day, but you will be advised upon booking. Bed & Breakfasts accommodate no more than 6 people – it’s like staying as a special guest in someone’s home. Guest houses tend to have more than 3 rooms and may offer dinner to their guests; some may be licensed. 1 star: Simple, practical, no frills 2 star: Well presented and well run 3 star: All rooms will have a wash basin 4 star: A minimum of 50% of the rooms will be ensuite or have a private bathroom 5 star: The highest standards of quality and service with a feeling of luxury. All rooms will be ensuite or have a private bathroom Self-catering All the self-catering properties in this guide are assessed by VisitBritain and include the following criteria: 1 star: A microwave is provided 2 star: All beds full size 3 star: Bed linen available 4 star: Linen provided and towels available. Access to a freezer and washing machine 5 star: The highest standards of quality and attention to detail Holiday, Touring and Camping Parks & Holiday Villages These are assessed on the standard they provide to visitors in all aspects: facilities, cleanliness, service, pitches, groundsmanship, play areas and leisure facilities where provided. 1 star: Simple, practical, no frills 2 star: Well presented and well run 3 star: Good level of quality and comfort 4 star: Excellent standard throughout 5 star: Exceptional with a degree of luxury 44
Additional Accolades CTA Gold & Silver Awards Gold and Silver Awards are given to hotels and guest accommodation that provide exceptional quality in all areas but in particular, in service and hospitality. AA Merits The AA gives percentage ratings to hotels, with those achieving over 80% receiving Red Stars. They also award Rosettes for Food , Egg Cups for exceptionally good breakfasts, and Yellow Stars to recognise outstanding guest accommodation. Rose Awards Caravan holiday homes for hire which are of a high standard are recognised by the Rose Award and apply to those sited on 4 or 5 star Holiday Parks.
