The Poplar River has some natural rip rap, but the amount present is insufficient for spring melt and high flow periods. The disadvantages of rip rap are that it is difficult to install on steep slopes and the rip rap must be locked together to prevent it from being carried downstream by high flows. Timber Cribbing – Timber cribbing is a technique for gully stabilization that involves creating a timber crib perpendicular to the gully. These structures can range from simple, single log dams, to large stone or plant filled structures. An advantage to this technology is that materials are often locally available and easy to install. However, construction needs to take place during the dormant period of the cuttings or the plants will have a low rate of survival. Figure 5.12 is an illustration of timber cribbing. 44

Geogrids – Geogrids are artificial grids that can be installed into the slope face to provide a physical layer of protection to the slope by either being reinforced structure or slowing surface water flow. Geogrids provide structure, but are labor intensive to install.
