at the 1st Nuremberg Forum
The International Heat Pump Symposium
organized by DKV offered 200 experts
from eleven countries an outstanding
platform for information, trends and
exchanging views. The “1st Nuremberg
Forum” under the motto of “Possibilities
and limits of heat pumps in existing
private and commercial buildings” took
place in the Exhibition Centre Nuremberg
from 18 – 19 September.
The some 200 participants from industry, business, associations and
research institutes highly praised the German Refrigeration and Air
Conditioning Society (DKV), Dr.-Ing. Rainer Jakobs as organizer of the
symposium and the main sponsor Chillventa/NürnbergMesse for the
successful symposium in the attractive ambience of the CongressCenter
Nürnberg. On the two days of the event, 24 international speakers
offered an impressive survey and outlook of markets, technologies
and potentials of heat pumps for cutting the primary energy requirement
of heating systems. The presentations and statements by the
experts also provided an opportunity for stimulating and intensive
discussions in large and small groups.
The first day focused on abstract presentations on heat pump markets
and developments in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, France
and China. Here it became clear that the sales figures for heat pumps
in these countries are rising steeply in some cases. At the same time,
there are considerable national differences in the use of heat pumps,
especially regarding the use of air, ground or water as heat sources
and the installation of heat pumps in new and existing buildings.
The speakers also showed that the positive market development of
the heat pump in individual countries is often closely associated with
official support and incentive programmes. Supplementary information

and information campaigns for architects, planners, installation contractors
and end customers play a key role, too. It was also reported
that a new European “Ecolabel” for heat pumps had been introduced
in mid September 2007.
The second day was geared to presentations of new energy-efficient
components, products and systems from the companies AL-KO Therm,
Alpha-Innotec, Copeland, Daikin, Johnson Controls, Kaut, Ochsner,
Stiebel-Eltron and Viessmann. These were enhanced by reports of
experiences with heat pump systems already installed in new and
existing homes, blocks of flats and commercial and industrial projects.
There was a lot of discussion on refrigerants for heat pumps, performance
figures and annual operating figures, but agreement prevailed
on one point: The manufacturers of heat pumps are called upon to
develop component and system solutions that are technically as
simple as possible, robust and also low-cost, particularly in order to
make even better use of the enormous energy-saving potentials in
existing buildings in the future.
The continuation of the International Heat Pump Symposium will take
place in Nuremberg in October 2008 at Chillventa, the new International
Trade Fair for Refrigeration, Air Conditioning, Ventilation and
Heat Pumps. The Heat Pump Symposium takes place on 14 October,
the day before the exhibition opens, and will be continued and
enhanced by several forums and special events at Chillventa from
15 – 17 October (www.chillventa.de).

Chillventa: What are the most important technical, political and
market-orientated variables influencing the room air conditioner
segment at present
Bernd Brinkmann: The major criteria for room air conditioners
i nclude energy efficiency, low noise level in operation and sensible
filter functions. This year, the massive effect that trust in the sustainability
of economic growth can have on positive market development
is also very clear.
Chillventa: What activities and solutions do the manufacturers of
room air conditioners offer in response to these requirements and
challenges
Bernd Brinkmann: The technical challenges created by political and
consumer requirements have been implemented impressively quickly
by most of the major manufacturers.
Chillventa: What role will be played by the new Chillventa exhibition
in October 2008
Bernd Brinkmann: After the great “wave” of technical changes –
virtually completed by the change to refrigerant R410A and the
introduction of inverter technology – Chillventa in Nuremberg offers
the ideal platform for presenting further product optimizations and
perhaps even new technologies in a pleasant environment.

“2006 and 2007 are top vintages
for exhibitions,” says Managing
Director Bernd A. Diederichs at the
presentation of the results for 2006.
Group turnover last year climbed
by 30 % to 125.7 million euros.
2007 with its different event cycles will be only slightly down on the
previous year with an expected turnover of 122 million euros, as it
was already a good six per cent above target at the half-year point.
It is therefore certain that 2007 will be the second best year in the
history of NürnbergMesse after 2006. The above-average development
of its existing own events, the establishment of new themes and the
purchase of other exhibitions are also intended to ensure aboveaverage
growth in the future, in Nuremberg and internationally.

modern congress centre CCN Ost has been
the venue for many top-flight congresses.
Investment in a successful future
About NürnbergMesse
This includes the purchase of the “mailingtage” exhibition as well as
the extension of the contract for the world-leading exhibition “Interzoo”
until 2020, which NürnbergMesse organizes on behalf of the owner
WZF – Wirtschaftsgemeinschaft Zoologischer Fachbetriebe (Commercial
association of specialist zoological companies). Also out in front
is “Chillventa Nürnberg”, the International Trade Fair for Refrigeration,
Air Conditioning, Ventilation and Heat Pumps, which starts in
autumn 2008. Over two thirds of the planned area of 30,000 m²
are already allocated to national and international exhibitors. The
new refrigeration exhibition “CholodExpo Rossija” starts in Moscow
in February 2008, six months before “Chillventa”. “In the case of all
four exhibitions, we beat some massive competition to secure the
themes for the Nuremberg exhibition and congress venue and the
NürnbergMesse portfolio,” reports exhibition chief Diederichs.
NürnbergMesse also intends to invest strongly in the acquisition of
exhibitions in Germany and abroad in the coming years. Between
30 and 50 million euros are available for this in the next ten years.
“More if necessary, if suitable opportunities arise,” says Diederichs.
NürnbergMesse is one of the 20 largest exhibition companies
in the world, is in the Top Ten in Europe, is a member of GDG
– Gemeinschaft Deutscher Großmessen (Association of Major
German Exhibition Centres) and holds 7th place in the German
rankings after the exhibition companies in Frankfurt, Düsseldorf,
Hanover, Munich, Cologne and Berlin – well ahead of Essen,
Stuttgart and Leipzig. The portfolio covers some 70 international
exhibitions and congresses at the Nuremberg location and worldwide.
Around 25,000 exhibitors (international share: 36 %),

on “trainees in the industry”
Chillventa: What are the most important technical, political and marketorientated
variables influencing the trainee situation in the refrigeration
and air conditioning industry at present
Manfred Seikel/Dietmar Schittenhelm: The population in Germany
has been declining since 2003 and is still decreasing. On a purely
statistical basis, twice as many older people as younger people are
expected by 2050, i.e. people of a relevant age for training. However,
the refrigeration and air conditioning industry can only meet the
great challenges facing it with well-trained trainees.

Air Conditioning Technology (BFS) in Maintal/Niedersachswerfen.
Dietmar Schittenhelm is Head of the BFS Training and Technology

Chillventa: What activities and solutions do the training establishments
offer in response to these requirements and challenges
Manfred Seikel/Dietmar Schittenhelm: Training institutions must
advertise with alternative, modern and trend-setting programmes
for all training in the refrigeration and air conditioning industry.
The training establishments must also cooperate more closely with
the companies to specifically promote new talent.

Manfred Seikel/Dietmar Schittenhelm: Companies presenting
their products at Chillventa can selectively recruit new talent through
personal contact. The training institutions represented at the exhibition
can also publicize the possibilities for promoting new talent and the
qualifications.
BITZER donates refrigeration professorship
The Senator Peter Schaufler Foundation is donating € 1 million
to support the “Endowed Professorship for Refrigeration and
Compressor Technology” at Dresden University of Technology.
The professorship is to start in October 2008, when the present
chairholder Prof. Hans Quack retires, and will initially run for five

New ASHRAE headquarters
equipped with
VRF air conditioning
and heat pump
The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating
and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE,
50,000 members worldwide) started the modernization
of its approx. 30-years-old headquarters
of 3,000 m² in Atlanta (USA) a few
weeks ago. As ASHRAE with its many partners
around the world is very strongly committed
to energy efficiency and good interior quality
in buildings, one thing about the 5.4 million
USD project was clear right from the start: In
terms of energy efficiency and comfort, the
technical building systems must meet the most
modern standards, so that the “new” ASHRAE
headquarters opening in June 2008 is awarded
the “Gold Rating” based on the certification
standards of the LEED system of the US Green
Building Council (www.usgbc.com). The team
of experts employed by ASHRAE developed
the following solutions for this: The ground
floor is air conditioned by an air-cooled, inverter-controlled
R410A VRF air conditioning
system with heat pump circuit, which can be
controlled separately for individual areas of
the building. A ground source direct expansion
heat pump has been installed to supply the
top floor and this can be switched from heating
to cooling operation to suit the demand.
Both heating/cooling systems are coupled to
an air conditioning system that is driven by a
100 % outside air unit and is used in the
regenerators for exhaust heat recovery.
To keep the costs of modernization as low as
possible for the society, ASHRAE is making
efforts to find sponsors and has even created
a brochure for this purpose (www.ashrae.
org/building). This states that the benefactor
of donations of over 50,000 USD for products
or services will be rewarded with a badge
of honour in the foyer of the building. ✦

The Research Council for Refrigeration
Technology celebrated its 50th birthday on
20 September with a reception in the German
stock exchange in Frankfurt. The Research
Council has always been dedicated to
promoting scientific research in the field of
refrigeration generation and application in
building air conditioning, commerce, industry,
transport, heat pumps, domestic appliances
and cryogenics and to initiating and conducting
joint industrial research. The first Chairman
of the Research Council in 1959 was
Prof. Rudolf Plank, who was followed by
Prof. Kurt Nesselmann, Dr. Emil Schmidt, Prof.
Helmut Lotz, Eckart Prandner and Ewald
Preissegger (2002 to present). The Research
Council, which is based at the VDMA in
Frankfurt, currently has 26 members from
industry, research and training. The council
has been managed by Director Dr. Karin Jahn
since 1992.
The Research Council for Refrigeration Technology
is a partner of Chillventa and is also
represented by Dr. Karin Jahn on the exhibition

CHINA REFRIGERATION 2008
Nürnberg Global Fairs, the subsidiary of
NürnbergMesse, is now organizing its
fourth German pavilion at CHINA REFRIG-
ERATION, the international trade fair for
refrigeration, air conditioning, heating
and ventilation, plus packing and storage
of frozen food. 19 German companies
exhibited at CHINA REFRIGERATION
in Guangzhou in 2007. The exhibition
attracted 955 exhibitors from 30 countries
and over 40,000 visitors. The share
of international exhibitors was about
20 per cent. The deadline for applications
to exhibit in the pavilion in 2008 is the

Thomas Ernst: The dominating technical issue is “energy efficiency”.
The focus is on speed- and frequency-controlled refrigerant compressors
or relevant apparatus. The influencing variable from a political
viewpoint is the environmental concept. Apart from compressors,
economic applications of environment-compatible refrigerants play
a role. The cost-benefit ratio and quality standard are also still dominant
market parameters for BITZER.
Chillventa: What activities and solutions do the compressor manufacturers
offer in response to these requirements and challenges
Thomas Ernst: As usual, BITZER is pushing the development of
innovative refrigerant compressors, apparatus and pressure vessels.
The decisive features are quality, energy efficiency and environmental
compatibility.
Chillventa:What role will be played by the new Chillventa exhibition
in October 2008
Thomas Ernst: First the Chillventa concept of equal involvement
of all relevant groups in the refrigeration and air conditioning market
gives us the opportunity to cultivate our contacts with established
and potential customers. Second we can also draw attention to
events accompanying the exhibition that deal with current issues in
the industry. This “network” free of competitive thinking is new and
valuable for visitors to the exhibition.

Daikin plans largescale
entry to US air
conditioning market

Daikin Industries based in Osaka (Japan), one
of the world market leaders in room air conditioners
and VRF air conditioning systems,
wants to enter the American air conditioning
market on a large scale starting in summer
2008. OYL Industries, the company acquired
by Daikin for 1.6 billion USD in Nov. 2006,
plays a major role in this plan. OYL owns the
refrigeration and air conditioning company
McQuay, which possesses a full sales network
in the USA. The company will offer the most
modern energy-saving Daikin multisplit and
VRF air conditioning solutions for singlefamily
houses and commercial buildings.
According to company statements, successful
implementation of this strategy is to help
Daikin become world market leader in air
conditioning by 2010. Daikin Industries expects
a turnover of about 11.4 billion USD
for 2007. ✦

segment at present
Xavier Feys: Politically, we must make it clear that the heat pump
utilizes up to 75 % renewable energy to heat buildings, a fact that is
largely unknown here and among the customers. As far as technical
aspects are concerned, we need specialist companies with well-trained
personnel.
Chillventa: What activities and solutions do the manufacturers of
heat pumps offer in response to these requirements and challenges
Xavier Feys: Quality is called for, and in all areas from product to
advice. The introduction of the new market technology needs three
to five years, so no hasty actions.
Chillventa: What role will be played by the new Chillventa exhibition
in October 2008
Xavier Feys: Chillventa offers us the ideal platform for exchanging
views and making intensive contact – in the heat pump segment,
too. After all, there are many specialized companies that see future
prospects in the heat pump and are approaching the subject in a

of improved acoustics (lower noise) and naturally high efficiency
in connection with optimized energy efficiency of the motors used.

Peter Fenkl: We are investing heavily in research to shorten innovation
cycles even more. Good results have been achieved by new
blade designs with improved aeroacoustics and efficiency and by
electronically controlled motors based on frequency control or EC.

technical, political and market-orientated
variables influencing the compact chiller segment
at present
Hans-Joachim Socher: The new Energy Conservation
Regulation (EnEV) and the energy
pass mean that increasing attention will be
given to energy efficiency. The trend is therefore
clearly towards refrigerants R410A and
R134a and equipment with multiscroll compressors,
as these are very energy-efficient in
partial load ranges, especially in combination
with R410A.
Chillventa: What activities and solutions
do the manufacturers of chillers offer in
response to these requirements and challenges
Hans-Joachim Socher: We are systematically
expanding our range of free cooling
systems (using outside air), as these
are very energy-efficient. We are also in
the process of changing the complete
range to refrigerants R410A and R134a.
Chillventa: What role will be played by
the new Chillventa exhibition in October
2008
Hans-Joachim Socher: Chillventa is the
ideal exhibition for our product spectrum.
The dialogue with specialist companies,
associations and planners is an essential
instrument for the industry. The trends
mentioned above will be on show at Chillventa
in 2008 and attention will be increasingly
focused on energy efficiency.
In addition to almost 100 papers covering the
current scientific developments and trends
from the whole field of refrigeration and air
conditioning, this year’s German Refrigeration
& Air Conditioning Congress organized
by DKV in Hanover on 22 – 23 November will
include a special event on heat pumps. At this
event on 23 November, national and international
speakers will present the results of
the European research programme “Possibilities
and prospects for heat pumps in existing
buildings” for the first time – and these are
certainly eagerly awaited.
The detailed programme for the DKV Congress

Gigantic: New world
record project for VRF
in India
The world’s biggest project to date for VRF
air conditioning systems is currently being
constructed in the EON Free Zone in Pune in
India. Altogether 928 VRF outdoor units and
6,600 indoor ceiling cassette units from manufacturer
and Chillventa exhibitor Daikin are
used for cooling 400,000 m² of office space

Chillventa: What are the most important
technical, political and market-orientated
variables influencing the planning of air conditioning
systems at present
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ulrich Pfeiffenberger: The
technical challenges for the planner are the
user’s greater demands for comfort, the
requirements for individual adjustment of
the systems, the growing internal loads and
thus the increase of the required basic cooling
loads. The general political conditions demand
the use of systems with higher energy efficiency,
in which the use of mechanical cooling
is minimized as far as possible or avoided.

the planners offer in response to these requirements
and challenges

planning process increasingly uses integrated
approaches that include energy considerations
and computer-aided planning tools are used
