the Solar System and our moon - exploration rome<br />
and egypt<br />

Just 50 years ago the planets, and even our moon, were<br />
largely unknown to human society. today they are <strong>part</strong> of our<br />
consciousness. how and why did this happen - and what have<br />
we discovered about our solar system, and potential others, since<br />
then? Seeking historical roots this course charts one of the last<br />
great quests of human exploration.<br />
term one: the Solar System: an in-depth consideration of its<br />
nature and scale; from planets to meteorites; from comets to an<br />
understanding of those huge impact structures that helped drive<br />
that greatest of all mysteries - life on earth. we will consider it all.<br />
term two: the moon: From galileo to JFK. a detailed study; from<br />
lunar geology (and mapping), to the apollo program - and the<br />
basic mechanics, engineering, computer science, history and<br />
social context of the apollo space flight. a rare opportunity to<br />
acquire a knowledge of that unique object in the night sky.<br />
Field trips and telescopic observation will be included in the<br />
course.<br />
Statistics for Social Studies<br />
Level 1 Codes: DAP101 (20 credits) and DAP102 (10 credits)<br />
Statistical information is all around us. this course offers a basic<br />
introduction to the field of statistics and how it can be used in<br />
everyday life. the course is useful for students who need to<br />
master basic statistical techniques for use in other courses e.g.<br />
psychology, Sociology or Social policy but also to students with<br />
an interest in the study of Statistics for its own sake.<br />

(All 10 credits)<br />
this course examines wales from 1914 to the present day.<br />
<strong>part</strong>icular attention will be paid to the great war (1914-<br />
1918), the 1930s and how the depression affected wales. the<br />
Second world war and the resultant social change will then be<br />
looked at. events will also be examined that have seen wales<br />
move to devolution with the resultant changing relationship to<br />
westminster.<br />
understanding drama<br />
Level 1 Codes: DAB165, DAB166 and DAB167<br />
(All 10 credits)<br />
this course will provide an introduction to the study of drama<br />
as a literary form through looking at the various elements of a<br />
dramatic text such as characterisation, dialogue, structure and<br />
the following of stage conventions. in addition, we will study the<br />
way that the written play can be transformed in performance.
