(Continued from page 13) day. it was 1:30 p.m.! She just didn't feel like selling any more gas. We also stopped at Pochayiv near Ternopil. That was an experience Г11 not forget soon. As we approached the gates to the Pochayiv Lavra, we heard wailing and screaming and saw women running towards us. The van carrying the famed Pochayiv Mother of God icon was leav– ing the monastery, and these women were crying and praying. І was so awestruck by this very emotional scene that 1 forgot to take photographs. The grounds and the Dormition Cathedral are beautiful, inside, the paintings and the icons are unbelievable. І was sorry that we did not get to see the Mother of God icon though. This is the second largest shrine in Ukraine after the Pecherska Lavra (Monastery of the Caves) in Kyyiv. І was surprised that the women living on the benches and niches around the grounds all spoke Russian. Lviv was next on our itinerary. From there we also stopped in Drohobych and the Sokal region north of Lviv. in Lviv, we stayed at the Grand Hotel. І knew that there had been a scandal involving the hotel, but we had not heard of the outcome until later. The hotel has been beautifully and tastefully renovated. The staff is welltrained in etiquette and fine service. The small rooms and the equally tiny beds were not worth Si20 per night, however. The restaurant was well-appointed, ser– vice excellent and the food fresh and well-prepared. We paid in dollars in the restaurant and 1 was charged in dollars for all my local and longer distance phone calls. When 1 complained, they told me that everyone gets ripped off, not just the Americans. Nice answer! І should have made my calls from our dri– ver's room and paid in coupons. The highlight of our stay in Lviv was the audience we had with Cardinal Myroslav Lubachivsky, primate of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church. There were many people waiting to see him this particular morning. When we gave our names and said that we were from Cleveland, they let us in right away. Thus, we had a 10-minute visit with my elementary teacher from Parma. As we left, we could hear the choir singing the responses to the liturgy at St. George's. What an uplifting sound! The city of Lviv is an old, charming and very intellectually stimulating city. There are many things to see and do. (The guide books are quite detailed.) І spent one day in bed with a stomach virus. І was sure it was not due to food because 1 had brought my own water, dried fruit, tuna, chicken soup and gra– nola bars. І ate only bread, butter and potatoes. Sure, everyone snickered that we Americans have such delicate consti– tutions, but it beat being sick. But, as hard as 1 tried, "it" found me. From my observations, it appears that Lviv has not had a facelift in a few hun– dred years, it is great that a few compa– nies are coming in and fixing up some of the old buildings (such as the Grand Hotel), but there is not enough being done to make a dent. The streets are a nightmare, not only for cars, but also for pedestrians. How women in high heels maneuver over these horrendous cobblestone, deeply pot-holed streets has got to be the Eighth Wonder of the World! І was in awe as 1 picked my way along in tennis shoes, being careful not to sprain one or both ankles at the same time. Driving time between Lviv and Kyyiv is about seven hours, it's a nice ride and the roads are very good. We passed green forests, rolling hills and planted fields. Of course, there is no comparison to the Carpathian Mountains, but the area has its own beauty. One sees the gold-domed cathedrals glistening in the sun; the peaceful Dnipro River quietly flowing by; the boulevards lined with kashtany (chestnut trees) in full bloom and perfuming the air, the magnificent monu– ments dedicated to, among others, the founders of Kyyiv, Taras Shevchenko and St. volodymyr. Getting around Kyyiv on the metro system is quite simple, but if you hate crowds, travel by car or taxi. We encountered problems only with parking. There are a million things to see and do in Kyyiv, but it is humanly possible to do only a few things in so many days. We spent one whole day at the Pecherska Lavra, walking the grounds, climbing the 242 steps in the Bell Tower and going underground through the catacombs. A walk around the old section of Kyyiv near St. Andrew's Cathedral was a great, but an exhausting experience. The streets there are worse than in Lviv and my soles felt no more pain. Another important site to see is Kaniv, the final resting place of Taras Shevchenko. Plan on another full day for this side trip from Ukraine's capital city. For something a little less strenuous, try a stroll on the banks of the Dnipro, or better yet, a stroll down Khreshchatyk. The shops are pretty nice. The TSUM Department Store is four floors of shopping pleasure, but no air conditioning. Entering Seagrams was like walking into an American boutique on Rodeo Drive. Nice to look at and unaffordable. We stayed in two hotels in Kyyiv, the Bratislava and the Tourist. Each cost us S80 per nigh:, about S60 more than the rooms were worth, if we were citizens, the rooms would have cost about S7. Again, we had two small beds crowded into a small, dusty room. The sheets were clean though. The bathrooms were adequate, supplied with the usual five squares of toi– let paper and one light bulb. І had to laugh every time we checked out the bathrooms. They so diligently place the "sterilized" notice in the sink, bathtub and toilet; too bad they don't scrub and sterilize first! І packed a can of Lysol with me as well, and І "Lysoled" my way through Ukraine from one bathroom and outhouse to another. There must be a shortage of lightbulbs, or of electricity because all the hotels we were in were poorly lit, and the rooms were dark as well. І applied makeup with my handy flashlight in one hand. Of course, natives don't see anything wrong about not seeing one's face in the mirror, or entering a lobby that resembles a cavernous pit, with one light bulb. One thing that hasn't changed either is the attitude of sales and service person– nel. They make you feel guilty for both– ering them. And to ask to see one other item is like a short walk to the gas cham– ber. Service in restaurants is about the same. Many restaurants don't have menus, so you are never sure of the price of anything you might order. When the bill arrives, there is no way to check if the charge is correct or if it has momen– tarily been inflated. The three hotel restaurants where we ate also provided dance music, but not one orchestra played Ukrainian music or sang Ukrainian songs. Everything was in Russian in our capital city of Ukraine. Regardless of the shortcomings, regardless of the politics, regardless of the diffi– culties traveling in Ukraine, do go any– way. Armed with a sense of humor, you can overcome most difficulties. Certainly we are used to comfort, conveniences and great service, but Ukraine is a country of many contrasts. The lasting impression etched in my mind is the endless beauty of God's country. І would return in a minute. You must come and experience and see for yourself. Kyyivan Pecherska Lavra This unique film about the secrets of the catacombs in Kyyiv is now available both in Ukrainian and English. Scenes from this underground monastery have never been available on video. During the times of Prince Yaroslav the Wise, the holy monks Antonij and Feodosij founded the underground monastery on the banks of the river Dnipro — this was the beginning of the Kyyivan Pecherska Lavra — a great religious and cultural center.
