KERHONKSON, N.Y. - The
Ukrainian National Association's
Catskill resort Soyuzivka opens its 1994
summer season on Fourth of July weekend
with an array of entertainers and cul–
tural exhibits, and a premier screening of
a new documentary film.
Festivities begin on Friday evening,
July 1, when the Oles Kuzyszyn Trio,
now called Luna, entertains guests at a
10 p.m. dance. On Saturday, July 2, an
8:30 p.m. concert bills two top acts: the
Kashtan Ukrainian Dance Ensemble and
Pavlo Dvorsky, vocalist. A dance folio w–
ing the concert will feature the music of
Fata Morgana and Tempo at 10 p.m.
The Kashtan dancers, under the artistic
direction of James Basso, hail from
Cleveland, in 1990, the troupe won the
grand prize for excellence at an interna–
tional festival of Ukrainian dance held in
Ukraine. This year they celebrate their
15th anniversary.
Mr. Dvorsky, born in Bukovyna, is a
singer, composer and Merited Artist of
Ukraine. He is the soloist of the famed
Smerichka ensemble, formed by cornposers
volodymyr ivasiuk and Levko
Dytkivsky in 1979.
On Sunday afternoon, July 3, at 2:30
p.m., Soyuzivka will premier Canadian
filmmaker Yurij Luhovy's feature-docu–
mentary film "Freedom Had a Price," subtitled
"Canada's First internment
Operation 1914-1920." The one-hour film
is an account of the imprisonment of thou–
sands of Ukrainians, branded enemy-aliens
by the Canadian government and sent to
internment camps across Canada. A S5
donation will be collected at the door.
On Sunday evening, New York's
vocal ensemble Promin will share the

CH1CAGO: The Les Kurbas Theater of
Lviv, under the direction of volodymyr
Kuchynsky, will stage excerpts from its reper–
toire at the Ukrainian institute of Modern Art,
2320 W. Chicago Ave., at 7:30 p.m.
Saturday, July 9
HUNTER, N.Y.: The Center of Ukrainian
Culture will open its summer season program,
under the direction of Dr. lhor
Sonevytsky, at the Grazhda, Route 23A, at 8
p.m. The opening will be supplemented by
an exhibit of traditional Ukrainian folk cos–
tume neckwear and head ornaments, curated
by Lubow Wolynetz of The Ukrainian
Museum in New York.
EAST MERED1TH, N.Y.: The Echo of
the Steppes Bandura Ensemble, under the
direction of Julian Kytasty, will appear as
part of the Delaware County Historical
Association's "Performance '94: The
Catskills," spotlighting performers from an
array of ethnic traditions. The ensemble
will hold a music workshop at The West
Kortright Center, at 5 p.m., followed by a
performance at 8 p.m. Workshop: 35; per–

Sunday, July 10
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J.: A conceit of
Ukrainian music, with Taras Filenko,
piano, and Lilea Wolansky, soprano, will
be held as part of Rutgers Summerfest 1994
at the Nicholas Music Center at 8 p.m. The
concert program will feature works of
Ukrainian classical and contemporary cornposers,
among them Lysenko, Revutsky,
Stepovy and Skoryk; as well as opera arias,
vocal pieces and folk-song arrangements by
Barvinsky, Fomenko, Liudkevych,
Lysenko, Maiboroda, Revutsky, Sichynsky,
Turkewych-Lukianowych, vakhnianyn
verykivsky, and Yakymenko. Borys
Liatoshynsky's Trio No. 2, Op. 41, will be
performed by Julian Ross, violin, Elizabeth
Thompson, cello, and Mr. Filenko, piano.
A pre-concert lecture on Ukrainian music
will be given at 7 p.m. by Dr. Filenko,
musicologist and researcher, institute of
Ukrainian Studies, Kyyiv University.
EAST JEWETT, N.Y.: The Echo of the

the Grazhda, St. John the Baptist
Ukrainian Catholic Church, Route 23A, at
12:30 p.m. Admission: $7.
SASKATOON: A public opening and
reception for the exhibit "Step By Step"
will be held at the Ukrainian Museum of
Canada, 910 Spadina Crescent E., 2-4 p.m.
The exhibit, produced by the Ukrainian
Museum of Canada, will be on view July
1-August 28. The exhibit includes tradi–
tional folk dances of western and central
Ukraine as well as modern-day stage
dances. A special display will provide
information about vasyl Avramenko and
his schools of dance, which have been
vital to the revival and preservation of
dance in Canada. For additional informa–

SASKATOON: The Ukrainian Museum
of Canada, 910 Spadina Crescent E., pre–
sents "Remembering Baba and Dido,"
an exhibit of artifacts and histories
from the museum's collection, on July
10-August 28. A public reception will
be held on Sunday, July 10, 2-4 p.m.
The exhibit reflects on the lives of
grandmothers and grandfathers, babas
and didos, who struggled in the early
days to provide il ' better future for
their children and grandchildren.

LANSDALE, Pa.: A two-day Ukrainian
festival will be held on the grounds of
Presentation of Our Lord Ukrainian
Catholic Church, 1564 Allentown Road.
A program of Ukrainian folk dance, fea–
turing the voloshky Ukrainian Dance
Ensemble of Philadelphia, polka bands
and Ukrainian foods and crafts are all
part of the activities on schedule for this
fun-filled event. Saturday, the activities

Heritage Council of Northeastern
Pennsylvania is organizing a bus trip to
he 19th annual verkhovyna Ukrainian
Youth Festival at Glen Spey, N.Y.,

Association, whose national offices are
headquartered in Scranton. The bus
leaves at 10 a.m. from the Ukrainian
