Huntington Harbour Garden Club by Barbara Devlin & Peggy Mouritz At the February meeting of the HHGC are Doreen Hill, Speaker Carol Redhead, Virginia Whipple and Pam Smart. The HHGC Garden Of The Month Award for January 2010 was awarded to the garden of Kathy and Timothy Stevecove at 16292 Wildfire Circle (Trinidad Island). The home occupies a large corner lot on Trinidad Island and the full 150 foot frontage presents pleasant continuity of design. Steps leading to the front door are flanked by large rocks and mature topiary trained black pines. Strawberries are used for ground cover, punctuated by low shrubs and grasses. A handsome long brick wall defines the property line at the side of the house, and is set back several feet to allow for continuous planting that emerges with the front areas. The corner lawn has two planter areas, with double trunk queen palms, sago palms and shrubs. The February HHGC meeting was held at the home of Sherry Bullock with co-hostesses Pam Smart and Jane Erdman assisting with a lovely luncheon on the waterfront deck. Carol Redhead from 26 Armstrong Nursery was the Speaker of the day. She showed members how to design a pot for the sun and one for the shade. She used E.B. Stone potting mix and added polymer to the soil that makes gel in the soil and the roots will grown through the gel and get stronger and it will help keep the soil moist. She told us to put a screen over the hole in the bottom of the pot to help keep the soil in the pot after watering. A plant made for the shade will last about 6 months and she used ivies, cyclamen and ferns for the shade planter and after planting she said to water thoroughly. The sun planter theme was pink and white double white impatiens. She used “Jack’s” fertilizer on the plantings. She brought along proteas (a plant from South Africa) which can be put in the house or outside to show us and brought along an old favorite, the piggyback plant and had all the members plant a root from the piggyback plant. She told us a trick to find a place for different plants in your home—hold your hand over plant and if you see a shadow it needs medium light, if you see no shadow it is a low light plant. The Chinese evergreen and the philodendron are both low light plants. She also suggested using a moisture meter on house plants to see when they need to be watered. Carol Redhead also told us that she is a volunteer in Horticulture Therapy at the VA Hospital in Long Beach and that the hospital has a beautiful garden on the grounds where veterans work in the garden growing flowers, plants and vegetables. The February HHGC Garden Of The Month Award was given to the garden of Dr. Ron and Elizabeth Gilbert. A fine olive tree dominates the corner of this attractive garden, with lawns stretching to the driveway on one side, and for 100 feet on the other. An undulating brick-edged planted area comes between the lawn and the high courtyard wall. This is edged with white alyssum backed by red azaleas and white lilies, giving a beautiful continuity of color design. There are pygmy date palms, flax and giant birds of paradise for dramatic contrast to the low grasses and shrubs. A porch with four arches leads to the front door of the Mediterranean style residence, with urns between the arches, spilling prolific ivy down the sides.
Huntington Harbour Yacht Club by Paul DeSalvo, Vice Commodore Members enjoying the warmth of the BBQ. Finally, Spring! That means the Kickoff to the boating season which included our March Shakedown Cruise and raft up in Newport Harbor. In May, our first of many cruises over to Catalina for a Beach Party and BBQ at the Isthmus and the next two nights at Avalon where 90+ of our members and friends will dine at the beautiful Catalina Island Yacht Club, then up to the Country Club for the next nights social. Speaking of boating, our fleet Captain and many volunteers are working feverishly on getting our fleet of Sabots in the water for our 40th opening of our Kids Sailing School which will run from mid June through mid August. A 6 week program that will give your kids or grandkids the necessary tools to go out and enjoy this very social sport and make many new friends at the same time. Our activities and events will increase this year with our newly formed fishing group headed by Tim Marshall. And what a kickoff event it was, last month when his group brought back four, 30 pound Humboldt Squid just off Pt. Ferman. Calamari for every one! We are forming our new golfing group as we speak, Our kickoff tournament will be a Best Ball Fund Raiser and Silent Auction sponsored by our newly formed, 501 c3 “Huntington Beach Sailing Foundation” Open to the public. Tentatively set for July. More info will follow. Putting together a 501 c3 Foundation was not a task to be taken lightly as our committee will attest to. I don’t know how many times during the past three years we wondered “Are we ever going to get through this” It was my honor to chair this committee with March raft up in Newport Harbour the help of Lloyd Clauss, Bill Wheeler, Dr. Mark Monroe, Jim Wallace and our Star volunteer, Attorney, Ron Lee, giving literally 100s of hours of his time to bring this all together. This new Foundation will now open the door for donations to our KID’S Sailing School. Funds we need desperately to renew our fleet of Sabots and establish Scholarships. First Mate Boating Seminar The First Mate Boating Seminar is set for April 17Th. It will be conducted right here in our harbor. The theme Is Catalina! And will include 7 topics: Coast Guard, Knot Tying, First Aid, Navigation, VHF Radio Operation, Anchoring and “in the Dr. Marilyn L. Noble Doctor of Audiology 27 water” Mooring Wand pick up, a class taught in our club boats. Included are lunch, a certificate of completion and an invitation from our club to join us on one of our many cruises to Catalina in your own boat. With our hands on mentoring you will feel like a pro with the confidence to go over to the Island by yourself anytime. Price: $75 per person, $60 per person for couples and a discount for Kids and those of you living in the Harbour area.
