Installation Luncheon, May, 2012, Shenandoah at the Arbor, 2012 -2013 Board.
After another wonderful, typical
Southern California summer, the ALL
Garden Club of Huntington Harbour
began a new season of learning, sharing,
and enjoying the company of
fellow gardeners (and some wannabe’s)
on September 19. We meet on alternate
months, generally having a short business
meeting followed by a speaker and
lunch at the HHYC. The September
meeting featured Mary Wagner, expert
in Feldenkraif Movement Therapy. She
conducted a workshop on “Gardening
without Aches and Pains”. Focusing
on how gardeners can make simple
adjustments in order to assure healthy
movement, Mary stressed an awareness of
ergonomics and body awareness exercises.
As a bonus, she also demonstrated simple
self-massage techniques. Much good
information was provided and members
asked important questions.
In the alternate months between
meetings, we like to get out and visit
some of the many gardens in the nearby
areas to enjoy the natural or enhanced
gardens so plentiful in this part of the
world! On October 17, Toni Aquino, one
of our members, has made arrangements
to visit The Hai Lai Buddhist Temple in
Hacienda Heights. We will have a docent
led tour of about forty-five minutes,
exploring the gardens, art, and architecture
that is so well known. Following the
visit to the temple, we will enjoy lunch in
the nearby area.
these kinds of activities, or might just like
to visit once to check us out. Linda Axel is
a break from cooking in the summer
they decided to return to Antonelli’s, in
Newport Beach, and repeat their menu
from their May installation of fi let of sole,
dessert. We all enjoyed it immensely for
really a Red, White and Blue Event as all the
tables had red, blue and white tablecloths
with red, white and blue large balloons
attached to the tables! Decorations were
planned and decorated by Rita Collins.
The event was a pot luck with members
bringing delicious Appetizers, Salads,
Main Dishes and Dessert. June Ascolesi
brought a beautiful dessert for the Fourth
SYC’s Annual Duffy Cruise
On Saturday August 11, Seagate
Yacht Club held their annual Duffy
Cruise. The event featured a cruise of
Huntington Harbor by twelve Duffy
boats all loaded with enthusiastic
passengers and crew were amply supplied
with rations and libations to survive the
one and one-half hour marathon. After
securing to the Bonaire docks the skippers
and their hardy crews advanced to the
clubhouse for proper cocktails, snacks and
a mixology demonstration and sampling
by Sue Giali featuring tropical drinks.
A Hawaiian themed dinner and desserts
were served and during the evening
numerous prizes were awarded.
The winner of the best boat/crew
was “Wine Time” skippered by Robin
Clark and first mate Jean. All participants
were given specially designed SGYC hats
as a reward for their steadfastness on the
high seas. The festivities were hosted by
Candy & Kevin Cloud, Pat & Vaughn
Jenkes, and Sherrill & Joel Lander. They
salute you all. Our sincere thanks for
everyone’s support with this event, you all
contributed to its success.
SYC’s Progressive Dinner
On July 14 the Club celebrated the
Olympics and the London 2012 summer
games during its annual Progressive
Dinner. More than 110 members and
guests, wearing the colors of the country
they were supporting, arrived in eleven
boats, as well as on foot and auto, for the
first event at the beautiful SeaGate home
of Floyd & Mira D’Angelo. For more
than an hour, we commemorated ancient
Greece with special appetizers, beverages
and decorations.
The party moved on to the second
event at the clubhouse, where the U.S.
Olympic team was in full focus. The
room was a medley of red, white & blue,
including Olympic decorations and worldclass
center pieces featuring the American
flag adorned by the flags of other countries
(thank you, Floyd D’Angelo!). Michael
Phelps was nice enough to provide several
autographed pictures that we used as
placemats. Following a great all-American
dinner, it was on to Ray and Jan Nagele’s
lovely corner-lot home for the third and
final event – a celebration of London and
the London 2012 summer games. We
enjoyed classic English desserts, beverages
and coffee with cordials. The party had
Dining at Tivoli Terrace, Laguna Beach after Tour of Festival of Arts.
Kathleen Moore won First Place in
the Orange County Fair this summer for
her quilting pillow made from her late
father’s silk bow ties. She pieced them
together and placed two large ties on the
front section . It was a lovely way to honor
her father’s memory.
The members enjoyed luncheon
at the Culinary Arts restaurant “Fifty
Forks” where the unique menu is created
by the students and faculty. Two tables of
members started with an amuse of exotic
juices served in an aperitif glass followed
by shellfi sh in a saffron broth. Dessert of
a many-layered apple cake completed the
meal. Members toured the upstairs teaching
facility after the meal.
The fall membership luncheon was
held in September at Sebastian’s Italian
Restaurant. Todd Ventura of Bill’s
Camera Shop spoke of composing successful
digital shots.
We’re looking forward to the annual
cocktail party to be held on October 6
at the recently renovated home of Sharon
was to commemorate and circulate some
of surfing world’s best quality offerings
of surfboards, surf art, and memorabilia.
The live auction was attended
by serious collectors, hobbyists as well
as spectators. Many items spurred
competitive bidding both in person and
through live on-line bidding. Everyone
went away with good deals and good
will be shown. Judges will award prizes in
each category.
Beading Buddies, Painting Pals and
raise a minimum of $50 from sponsors or
they can make the donation personally.
Proceeds benefit Children’s Hospital of
Orange County and CHOC at Mission.
The Walk is the largest fund raising
event for the hospital and it is a time when
families express their thanks to the doctors
Re-Elect Former Mayor
Dave Sullivan
Dear Huntington Harbour Neighbor,
After 12 years of service, twice as mayor, I am again running for city council.
Our city is in a severe fiscal crisis and I feel that my experience and fiscally
conservative philosophy can help.
Further, my previous 12 years on the council tells me that it is vital for you
to have a Huntington Harbour resident representing you on the city council
in order to advocate for Huntington Harbour issues.
My philosophy: A councilperson should actively solicit the public’s views
and act on them.
A city’s budget is no different than a family’s budget. Don’t spend what you
don’t have.
Sincerely,
Dave Sullivan
Sea Isle Garden Club
by Cindy Allen and Caron Mount
Sea Isle Garden Club members at the June Orange County District Meeting: Caron Mount, Lucille
Mascoli, Carolyn Platt and President Mary Ann Brinket.
Have you ever been on a Lady Bug
Scavenger Hunt? Sea Isle Garden Club’s
President Mary Ann Brinket and Vice
President for Programs, Carolyn Platt,
have planned enjoyable and educational
programs to follow our monthly meetings.
In September, members of SIGC
continued our work with Eyes on Edinger
by participating in a fun review of our
Edinger Parkway Plant Identification
Program. For the Lady Bug Scavenger
Hunt, Carolyn sent us exploring in
teams of two, gathering samples of all
the shrubs, 4 tree types, and various
ground cover we could identify, that
are all flourishing along Edinger. Prizes
were awarded to the winning teams, after
which everyone shared an after-summer
luncheon along with stories of summer
activities.
Vice President for Membership
Cindy Allen distributed the new
Membership books, again published by
Maria and Jim Lockie’s Print’n’Copy.
10
The cover this year featured Cindy’s own
photos of the California Matilija poppy
and the Pride of Madeira plants, both of
which are providing new habitat along
Edinger for bees, monarch butterfl ies,
and hummingbirds.
Mary Ann announced our Club’s
goal for the coming year is to work with
the City of Huntington Beach on creating
a donor recognition area in the Parkway,
and to monitor the 2013 planning of the
bike path.
On Wednesday, October 10th, Sea
Isle Garden Club members will meet at
the SeaGate Clubhouse for a short business
meeting, then carpool to the Plant
Stand in Costa Mesa for a workshop
Thirty members and friends of La
Traviata attended the Afternoon Theater
Party – organized by Mary Busche - to
see “My Fair Lady” at the Rose Center
Theater. This was a sparkling production
of Lerner and Lowes classic musical.
Afterward, the group went to have drinks
Board members of the Flying
Dutchman Chapter of the Segerstrom
Center for the Arts were treated to a
luncheon by Chairman Bobbitt Williams
at a country club in Newport Beach in
late August to plan events for the coming
year. Those attending were Bobbitt
Williams, chairman, Carol Kirkwood,
membership; Mike Nielsen, Ways and
Means; Jan Goss, Recording Secretary;
Gayle Wayne, hospitality; Charlene
Bauer, parliamentarian; and Frieda
Koester, publicity.
The group planned five meetings for
the year and enthusiastically supported
themes and entertainment for the
events. Details were outlined for the
September 29th fund raiser which was
held at the lovely home of Marlene and
Chris Neilsen. A program of Broadway
Musicals was performed by students from
the Orange County School of Arts. It was
a perfect evening that provided delicious
food, exchanges of chat about summer
activities, and a big welcome to many
guests.
La Traviata was one of the early
chapters of the Guilds – created in
1978 – eight years before the opening
of Segerstrom Hall, as a cohesive,
countywide volunteer support group
to promote the vision of a world class
performing arts center in Orange County.
La Traviata members are proud of their
role in helping to accomplish this vision.
of the new yearbook. Every year our
yearbook is truly a work of art, embellished
with many beautiful photographs. It is no
wonder the 2011-2012 HHGC year book
was awarded first place in its category by
California Garden Clubs., Inc. Members
will be able to admire the new yearbook
on the first meeting of the year scheduled
for September 18, 2012.
We are proud to see the names of
three new members in our yearbook: Elise
Masseling, Jeanne Nakamura and Wendy
Gingerich. Besides a love for gardening,
Elise also enjoys music and singing in the
choir of GWC. Elise and her husband
Jake have a passion for traveling and
are planning a trip to Australia this fall.
Jeanne moved to Huntington Beach
from La Habra seven years ago. She is
an avid golfer and gardener, of course.
She has a passion for growing sweet peas
and plumerias. Wendy, a retired science
teacher, has lived in Huntington Beach
for more than 40 years. Now that she is
retired, gardening has become her favorite
pastime. Her main area of interest lies in
the Norma B. Gibbs Butterfly Park.
In July Wendy Nakamura and Pearl
Holmes, Newsletter Editor, attended
a lecture given by Leslie Gilson at
Sherman Gardens. Leslie Gilson is the
Restoration Coordinator for the Norma
B. Gibbs Butterfly Park in Huntington
Beach. The restoration project at the
park was started in 2008. Its mission is
the restoration and preservation of the
Monarch Butterfly habitat. The project
includes removal of dead trees and
planting new trees and plants, especially
milkweed plants or Asclepias fascicularis.
Monarch caterpillars eat only the leaves
from milkweed plants; a single caterpillar
can eat 20-30 leaves before she is ready
to make her chrysalis. Besides milkweed
plants, Ms Gilson and her volunteers also
plant a wide variety of “nectar plants”.
Nectar plants attract and feed adult
butterflies and others insects and even
birds. If you haven’t visited The Gibbs
Butterfly Park, you will be pleasantly
surprised. It is located on 11641 Graham
Street, Huntington Beach across from the
Meadowlark Golf Course.
Supporting the stewardship of the
park is an example of the more than dozen
philanthropies of the HHGC. Others are
providing seed money and actual labor
for the gardening projects at several local
elementary schools, the Native Garden
for Science Students at GWC, the Shipley
in maintaining the Rose Garden at the
the Meals on Wheels Senior Outreach
of Huntington Beach. Early this year
a donation was made to Penny Pines in
honor of Carol Wood, a former Harbour
resident and past president of the HHGC.
The Penny Pines Program was initiated
in California in 1941. It is a statewide
conservation program to help maintain
the National Forests in California.
During the past 60 years, individuals as
well as organizations such as garden clubs,
service organizations, youth groups and
schools have raised millions of dollars to
keep our forests green and healthy.
The HHGC holds regular monthly
meetings on the third Tuesday of the
month. Lectures, presentations and
field trips are all organized to encourage
interest in all phases of home gardening,
to promote better horticultural practices,
and to stimulate interest in civic beauty.
Huntington Harbour’s Mark Ivey Coaches Team to Olympic Gold.
by Kevin Ivey
Olympic Gold Medallists Max Salminen (L) and Fredrik Loof with Coach Mark Ivey on the podium after
receiving their gold medals for the Star Class.
Huntington Harbour’s Mark Ivey
grew up sailing sabots at Huntington
Harbour Yacht Club from the age of
seven years. Son of long term residents
Kevin and Judith Ivey of Davenport
Island, Mark has an illustrious sailing
career. This summer the HHYC member
coached the Swedish Star team of Fredrik
Loof and Max Salminen to win a Gold
Medal in the Star Class at the Olympic
Games in Weymouth, England. Freddy
and Max secured their gold by winning
the Gold Medal race held on Sunday,
August 5th.
Mark lived in the Olympic Village
with the Swedish sailing team and
other sailors and coaches from all over
the world. This was a wonderful and
unique experience. “ I have learnt a new
admiration and respect for Olympic
athletes and for their coaches” says Mark.
In 2009, Mark was named USA
National Sailing Coach of the year after
coaching George Szabo and Rick Peters
to a Gold Medal at the 2009 Star World
Championships in Varburg, Sweden.
Mark has been coaching the Swedish
team in regattas all over the world for
the past year and was looking forward
to a well earned rest when he returned to
California from the Games.
Orange County Barons’ Ball 2012
for the American Cancer Society
Co-Chairs Karyn Sanderson and Jeanie Gibson.
The OC Barons’ League (formerly
known as the Cattle Baron’s League)
presents the OC Barons’ Ball “Rock
‘n Roll for the Cure” taking place on
Saturday, October 27, 2011 – 7:00
p.m. at the Santa Ana Country Club,
Santa Ana. The event features dining,
dancing to “Danny Memphis & the
Extraordinaires.” The event’s Co-Chairs
are Jeanie Gibson and Karyn Sanderson.
Proceeds from the gala will fund
the American Cancer Society’s lifesaving
research, educational programs, advocacy
and patient services. To date, the
volunteer members of the OC Barons’
League have raised nearly $5 million in
the fight against cancer.
This year, it is estimated that 11,630
people in Orange County will hear
the words: “You have cancer,” nearly
16
144,035 statewide. Because of recent
breakthroughs in research and cancer
education, more than 63 percent of them
will live high quality lives for more than
five years past their diagnosis. But we
want to exceed survival past diagnosis to
further support research, patient services,
advocacy and educational programs
for Orange County families. Last year,
the American Cancer Society, which
funded the research that discovered the
mammogram, Pap smear and Tamoxifi n,
helped more than 3,281 local cancer
patients with free transportation for
medical treatments, wigs, one-on-one
emotional support, resource referrals,
vital information, and other necessities.
Nationally, the Society has invested more
than $3.4 billion in cancer research,
including funding 44 Nobel Laureates
and investing $63.5 million last year in
California-based research programs.
Tickets to the OC Barons’ Ball start
at $200 per person, and table sponsorships
at various levels. For information, contact
the American Cancer Society at (949)
purpose of HHPOA? First of all, we are
still the legal organization responsible
for keeping and maintaining the
or i g i n a l C C & R’s a s w e l l a s t he up d a t e s
for Huntington Harbour Mainland,
Admiralty, Davenport and Humboldt
Islands. Newer communities such
as Coral Cay, Trinidad Island and
Faire Marin have their own CC&R’s.
Anytime you are planning a remodel,
approval must be obtained from
the Architectural Committee of the
18
Hume, passed away this summer. How
we will miss her. In her memory we ask
those interested to donate to La Familia
in her memory for library books for
Orangewood.
Fund raising and fun go together
when it’s on Mary Busche’s deck on a
Sunday afternoon. Good friends helping
children of Orangewood show great
spirit and friendship. Come join us next
time. You’ll like it.
HHPOA. This approval makes it easier
when going to the City for permits.
We are an organization concerned
with the well being of Huntington
Harbour overall and also support the
maintenance of the gardens at the corner
of Algonquin and on Courtney Lane
and Davenport.
Although dues are voluntary we
urge you to pay when you receive your
notice as we cannot do what we do
without money. It is only $85.00 per
household per year so please, if you have
not paid, reconsider and send in your
check today.
The Board of Directors meet
every other month in the Huntington
Harbour Mall. The next meeting will
be held Wednesday the 3rd of October
at 7 p.m. We appreciate your help and
support.

Huntington Harbour Yacht Club
by Bill McCormick, Vice Commodore
HHYC members enjoying the day at Ballast Point/Cat Harbor.
Marie and Richard Thompson in their winning dinghy entry.
Since the last issue of the Harbour
Light the activities at HHYC have
continued non-stop. August 3-5 saw
members cruising to Marina Del Rey
Harbor and visiting the Del Rey Yacht
Club. One of the best features of this
cruise is the popular Friday night
Seafood Buffett at the California YC and
this year was no exception with many
members driving to Marina Del Rey just
to participate in this grand repast.
Next, the clubs annual Cat Harbor
Cruise was held August 31-Sept 3.
Dinner, activities, games and a bar
were set up at the Ballast Point Facility
in Cat Harbor. Coordinated by Marie
Thompson, the cruise was attended by 20
boats and included three cocktail parties,
an omelet bar breakfast, and a fabulous
dinner prepared by our Fleet Captain
and “chef par excellence” Phil Ventura.
The annual duck race was won this year
by Ann McCormick. In a long standing
tradition, members decorated their
dinghies to compete in a parade through
the harbor in competition with Cerritos
Bahia Yacht Club. The coveted perpetual
trophy won last year by CBYC was won
by HHYC this year when Marie and
Richard Thompson’s entry was judged to
be the winner.
Meanwhile back in the Harbour, a
gala Labor Day small boat cruise of the
Harbour was put on by the Hooligans
and included a Duff y Boat Quiz Cruise
around the Harbour with prizes awarded
for the boat team with the most correct
answers. A delicious barbecued rib, beef
and chicken dinner was waiting for the
participants upon their return to the
Club.
The yacht club was closed from
August 20-30 for a long awaited
complete remodel and redecoration
job under the direction of Interior
Designer Mark Bullock. In addition to
a complete re-painting of the interior of
the building, new flooring was installed
in the entryway and bar area, the bar was
re-faced with new wood and a granite
top, new lighting was installed in the
entryway, new fans were installed in the
upstairs areas, and new carpeting was
installed in the fi rst floor dining area
and the second floor mezzanine level.
The result is that the club looks modern,
fresh and more nautical. A gala grand
opening was held for the membership
on September 16 in conjunction with
the Annual meeting. Alice Zamboni
summed up the overall assessment of the
delighted club members: FANTASTIC!
Even though it was late in the
season, the cruising schedule continued
with the very popular cruise to Bahia
Corinthian Yacht Club hosted by Steve
and Marsha Saracco over the weekend
of September 28-30. Attendees enjoyed
a potluck dinner on the dock, several
cocktail parties and a delicious dinner
on Saturday night in the BCYC dining
room.
Due to popular demand, the club
bar is now open 7 days a week with happy
hour prices from 4 to 6 PM daily. Food
and snacks are available each night and
many members are now enjoying the late
summer evenings with their fellow yacht
club members at the club.
The HHYC has a wide range of yearround
social, boating and philanthropic
events. If you live in the area, love
19
boating or just plain want to have fun,
you need to become an HHYC member.
We welcome inquiries about membership
and would be happy to introduce you to
the Yacht Club as our guest at one of our
Sunday brunches our Friday night mixers
and provide you with more information.
The palm trees were swaying, the Mai
This annual summer gathering is to
HHPC: Islanders
by Eva Kilgore
Jenny Huntsinger and Eva Kilgore got their heads together to talk about the boat parade, and public
relations!
Teresa Nichols, host of the Islander party!
Islander president Cristi Ulrich says
Ole! to the entire group as we get this
season underway. To kick things off,
our dynamic group met at the gorgeous
waterfront home of Teresa Nichols for a
fiesta. Thanks to Jo Andrews for handling
the RSVP list.
We started off with a lively meeting,
then met up with the guys for margaritas,
wine, beer...delicious tacos (from a very
cool taco cart) and then, to top it all off...
dessert! A yummy, fun night to catch up
with everyone, and talk about our 50th
anniversary. You’ll see Islanders at the
HHPC Boutique (many of them). Debi
Rodden, Julie Huniu, Linda Parlee, and
Carrie Wexler have been busy putting it
all together.
Susan Qaqundah, Kim Weddon and
many more Islanders are jumping right
in to help. After the boutique comes the
boat parade! So many past grand marshals
(including our fi rst woman GM, Jenny
Huntsinger) are getting together to make
this a fantastic parade. Islander volunteers
are right on board to assist.
Then, it’s time for Cruise of
Lights. You’ll see Islanders loading and
unloading buses, ushering our guests,
answering phones, and doing whatever
it takes to ensure smooth sailing for
more than 15,000 passengers. More on
the boat parade and Cruise of Lights in
December! Finally, it’s on to the Grand
Marshal Gala Event on the Queen Mary.
Will keep you posted.
From the Boat Parade Committee to each Harbour Neighbor:
This is a very special Golden Anniversary year and we want you to know how much we appreciate your past
support. The Huntington Harbour Boat Parade is our ‘Thank You’ for decorating your homes.
Watch for complete Boat Parade information in the October issue of the Harbour Light magazine which will
include the list of important dates, the parade route and the forms you will need to enter our decorating
contest. This information is also available on our website at www.hhboatparade.org.
Our Boat Parade will be Saturday December 8 th and Sunday December 9 th . The Grand Marshal Team has
chosen the theme of “Golden Memories, 50 Years Of Music”. So, whether you will enter your boat in the
parade or decorate your home, we encourage you to be creative! What musical memory from the past 50 years
is your favorite? This is the time to let your imagination soar! We expect the Harbour to be a musical variety
show of lights!
Sincerely,
Margie Bogart and Joanne Fernbach
HHPC: Boat Parade, Calling All Skippers!
by 2012 Grand Marshal Team and the Boat Parade Committee
The Huntington Harbour
Philharmonic Committee is celebrating
its Fiftieth Anniversary and the Boat
Parade will inaugurate several of
the special events being planned in
recognition of this milestone. We are
inviting you to join in the festivities by
decorating your boat and entering the
parade.
This year the parade will run
Saturday, December 8th and Sunday,
December 9th. And because it is such a
special occasion, the Past Grand Marshals
have formed a team to organize and lead
the parade in their decorated boats. They
are looking forward to making this the
‘best ever’ in all of Southern California!
As you know, the Boat Parade is the
start of our fund raiser, “Cruise of Lights®”,
providing funds for music education for
Orange County school children. Many of
you have been instrumental in the past in
making the Boat Parade a huge success.
We encourage and welcome new as well
as past participants. If you have thought
about it before but just didn’t get around
to entering, don’t hesitate this year—you
will love being part of this! And to all past
participants—we look forward to seeing
your entry form again! This year’s theme,
Golden Memories—50 Years of Music,
should provide you with lots of decorating
ideas. Pick a decade, a genre, a group.
Music will fi ll the evening air and the
Harbour channels will be fairly dancing.
You can’t help but have fun with this. The
official forms are available for download
at hhboatparade.org, in “Harbour Light”
magazine, or at the Huntington Harbour
Philharmonic Office: 16889 Algonquin
Street Huntington Beach, CA 92649,
phone (714) 840-7542.
You can reach us at GM@
it really helps us in our parade planning.
of money to pay for expenses such as trophies for our winners, engraving, printing, postage, banners & numbers, etc. You
will want to be part of our 50th year celebration by underwriting the expenses for this milestone event. Any excess of monies
will go toward the Philharmonic Society’s music education programs for the children of Orange County. Donors of $50 or
more will be listed in the Harbour Light Magazine; however, any amount will be much appreciated. Thank you!
WHO WE ARE
The Huntington Harbour Philharmonic Committee is one of 23 committees supporting the PHILHARMONIC SOCIETY OF
ORANGE COUNTY, the county’s oldest non-profit music organization. For 50 years we have joined them in their mission to foster,
promote and increase the knowledge and appreciation of the arts through the presentation of performances by musical artists of national and
international stature and the development and implementation of a wide variety of music education outreach programs.
More than a quarter of a million Orange County students, from kindergarten through high school, participate yearly in the Youth Programs
provided by The Committees of the Philharmonic Society. The volunteers of The Committees create, provide and fund an extensive array of
programs. Over 1,500 presentations are offered by professional musicians and trained docents at no charge to all public and private schools in
the county.
There are five groups in the Huntington Harbour Philharmonic Committee: Admiralty, Islander, Marina-Windjammer, Sandpiper, and
Trinidad . Each member volunteers time with the Youth Programs and with fund raising. The reward is seeing our young people light up to
the sights and sounds of music..
Our main funding project is the annual December Cruise of Lights®. For this 50th year holiday celebration, we are encouraging all our
Harbour neighbors to decorate their homes and participate in the decorating contests so that we can carry on the spirit of the Cruise of Lights®.
Thank you for your continued support for our music education programs.
