Amigos de Bolsa Chica - The Railing Wallby Dave CarlbergTwenty years ago this last January, the Amigos de Bolsa Chica dedicatedtheir spectacular “Railing Wall”, anoversize mural depicting the Bolsa ChicaWetland and its wildlife. The muralwas painted on a wall adjacent to theAmigos’ office on McFadden Avenue inHuntington Beach in 1992. As a long-time member ofthe Amigos, Ketchum was fully aware ofthe key role the organization had playedin preventing the Bolsa Chica Wetlandfrom becoming another Marina del Reyand wanted to reward the organizationin some way. Inspired by an illustrationin her children’s book “Clapper Rail: TheSecret Bird of the Marsh”, she designed amural that would cover nearly the entiretwo-story wall.It took seven weeks to complete the18 foot by 36 foot mural. Tall ladders andscaffolding were needed to work on theupper reaches of the painting. Ketchumwas aided by 15 professional and amateurartists, including distinguished wildlifeartists Thomas Anderson and RobertReichert. Ketchum said that the muralwas the third one she had done, but thefi rst one with other artists. The difficultpart was to fi nd a way to coordinate thevarious styles and skills of her assistants.Because of the large size of the images,Ketchum had to bring in biology expertsto aid in getting the details of the plantsand animals right. An inscription at the bottom of themural reads, “To the Amigos de BolsaChica, the best friend a wetlands everhad”.The mural can be seen behindthe office building at 5811 McFaddenAvenue, at the corner of Assembly Lane,Huntington Beach.16

Huntington Harbour Philharmonic Committeeby Joanne FernbachAccepting the check for $85,000 are (on the left) Sandra Potter, Treasurerand (center) Karen Wolff, President. Between them, Cruise of Lights® co-chairsKaren Ridout and Kim Weddon, together with Lyn Senske and Linda Axel,HHPC Co-Chairmen (far right) were proud to make the presentation. No sooner has the dust settledaround the Cruise of Lights® and BoatParade activities than HHPC is gearingup for putting those hard-earned fundraising dollars to good use!THE RESULTS ARE IN…Over 10,000 tickets were sold and thecustomers that cruised with us were oohingand aahing over the wonderful lightsthat reflected in the waters of HuntingtonHarbour. That means we were able tocontribute $85,000 to the PhilharmonicSociety of Orange County to supportour school music education programs.Thank you again to all the homeowners, both on-water and off-water, for takingthe extra time to decorate and give ourcommunity that special punch for theholidays. Hats off to Kim Weddon andKaren Ridout, co-chairs of the Cruise;additional kudos to Lisa Mulvania andSuzanne Russell, co-chairs of the BoatParade; and to the Ways and Means go-towoman, Lolly McHardy. These womenand their committees spent thousandsof hours coordinating the insurance andcity permits, our volunteers, the boats, the captains, the narrators, the judges thatmade this year so successful! You may ask…Why do you spend somany hours putting on these two events? The answer is simple to our members, butto our Harbour community it may notbe so well-known. So to give you a littleinsight, in February and March you’ll seethe Music Mobile van in the Harbour, driven by our members easily identifiedin their familiar white pants and blueshirts. These docents, who have hadspecial training, are taking music to thefourth grade classes in our local schools, giving a presentation and demonstrationof the instruments which they will seeas in a symphony orchestra when theyare fifth graders. The 45-minute lessonincludes actual instruments and theirplacement in the orchestra as well as anopportunity for actual hands-on timefor each student. Over the years we havereceived enthusiastic feedback from thestudents and grateful comments from theteachers! As you know, music educationhas been cut from many school programsso we are fi lling a much needed hole inthe curriculum. The instruments andvan maintenance costs are covered by thefunds; we do our part for the love of it!WHAT ELSE?Another thing we love is ushering atthe ‘age-appropriate’ concert programs inthe Renée and Henry Segerstrom ConcertHall and in several other large venuesin Orange County. For this we joinmembers from 22 other PhilharmonicCommittees in OC…it’s a really bigshow! Co-sponsored by Disneylandand its 15-piece band, the second gradeconcerts are a basic introduction to brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments. For fifth graders there’s the more comprehensiveperformance with orchestralmusic and classical dance presented bythe Orange County Youth SymphonyOrchestra and Orange County BalletCompany! Can you imagine what secondor fifth graders think when they walkthrough the doors of that concert halland then hear really incredible musicperformed by other young people? Canyou imagine how it warms our hearts tobe able to bring music to almost a quarterof a million children?Like the holiday Cruise and BoatParade, in the spring we also have coordinatorsfor Music Mobile presenters andsecond and fifth grade concerts ushers. Our ever-so-efficient chairmen wereSharon Young and Elise Masseling forthe music mobile; Terri Feterik handledeverything except the carpools for the20The committee is proud of the coverage received in the Winter Harbour Lightmagazine. (L to R) Lillian Wood, Lolly McHardy, Valerie Ingham (offi cemanager), Linda Axel, Kathy Liddle, Donna Shaff er, Mim Strickler, PamMyers, Kim Weddon, Karen Ridout, and Lyn Senske.concert ushering! Can you imaginescheduling over a hundred women to fi ll avariety of positions in numerous locationsand schools in Orange County? That’sexactly what they did!WHAT’S NEXT?A really big celebration, that’s what! It’s our 50th Anniversary. That’s right…we’ve been putting on the Boat Paradeand Cruise for FIFTY years and we willbe celebrating this year! Our GrandMarshal is announced at a special eventevery March and shortly thereafter we willknow the theme for the Boat Parade andhome decorating contest. As soon as thatis determined we will send each Harbourresident a letter outlining the details andhow you can participate. Everythingabout this coming year will have a specialsparkle--all our members are lookingforward to this singular celebration. Wehope you’ll catch the enthusiasm!INTERESTED?If you would like to learn moreabout our activities and get to know likemindedmembers of this community atthe same time, please read on. The reportsfrom each of the five groups that compriseour Committee are on the following pagesand you are invited to join any of themat a meeting or social event! You mighteven want to join us and usher at one ofthe concerts; it’s such a special experience!Consider this your personal invitation.Call 714/840-7542 for more information,or contact one of the groups. And last, but not least… because theediting gremlins crept between the lines ofour February article a very special donorwas left off the lists. Sea Isle Garden Clubby Caron Mount and Cindy AllenMembers at the Jan. meeting: Carolyn Lloyd, Carolyn Platt, Cindy Allen, Lyn Senske, Lucille Mascoli, President Mary Ann Brinket, Susan LaPittus, TerryHayden, Loel Jones, Anne White, Jackie Neil, Caron Mount and Cathy Kelly. The Sea Isle Garden Club hasreceived wonderful news from the Cityof Huntington Beach: funds for completingthe Edinger bike path have becomeavailable. Years of fundraising effortsfrom our formidable garden club, led tothe City of Huntington Beach accepting$166,000 from our community members’contributions to help complete theEdinger Parkway. In 2010, the City finishedthe landscape improvements alongthe north side of Edinger Avenue west ofBolsa Chica Street. Due to funding constraintsthe pedestrian/bicycle path wasnot able to be completed as envisionedas part of the project.
