Huntington Harbour’s Mark Ivey Coaches Team to Olympic Gold.
by Kevin Ivey
Olympic Gold Medallists Max Salminen (L) and Fredrik Loof with Coach Mark Ivey on the podium after
receiving their gold medals for the Star Class.
Huntington Harbour’s Mark Ivey
grew up sailing sabots at Huntington
Harbour Yacht Club from the age of
seven years. Son of long term residents
Kevin and Judith Ivey of Davenport
Island, Mark has an illustrious sailing
career. This summer the HHYC member
coached the Swedish Star team of Fredrik
Loof and Max Salminen to win a Gold
Medal in the Star Class at the Olympic
Games in Weymouth, England. Freddy
and Max secured their gold by winning
the Gold Medal race held on Sunday,
August 5th.
Mark lived in the Olympic Village
with the Swedish sailing team and
other sailors and coaches from all over
the world. This was a wonderful and
unique experience. “ I have learnt a new
admiration and respect for Olympic
athletes and for their coaches” says Mark.
In 2009, Mark was named USA
National Sailing Coach of the year after
coaching George Szabo and Rick Peters
to a Gold Medal at the 2009 Star World
Championships in Varburg, Sweden.
Mark has been coaching the Swedish
team in regattas all over the world for
the past year and was looking forward
to a well earned rest when he returned to
California from the Games.
Orange County Barons’ Ball 2012
for the American Cancer Society
Co-Chairs Karyn Sanderson and Jeanie Gibson.
The OC Barons’ League (formerly
known as the Cattle Baron’s League)
presents the OC Barons’ Ball “Rock
‘n Roll for the Cure” taking place on
Saturday, October 27, 2011 – 7:00
p.m. at the Santa Ana Country Club,
Santa Ana. The event features dining,
dancing to “Danny Memphis & the
Extraordinaires.” The event’s Co-Chairs
are Jeanie Gibson and Karyn Sanderson.
Proceeds from the gala will fund
the American Cancer Society’s lifesaving
research, educational programs, advocacy
and patient services. To date, the
volunteer members of the OC Barons’
League have raised nearly $5 million in
the fight against cancer.
This year, it is estimated that 11,630
people in Orange County will hear
the words: “You have cancer,” nearly
16
144,035 statewide. Because of recent
breakthroughs in research and cancer
education, more than 63 percent of them
will live high quality lives for more than
five years past their diagnosis. But we
want to exceed survival past diagnosis to
further support research, patient services,
advocacy and educational programs
for Orange County families. Last year,
the American Cancer Society, which
funded the research that discovered the
mammogram, Pap smear and Tamoxifi n,
helped more than 3,281 local cancer
patients with free transportation for
medical treatments, wigs, one-on-one
emotional support, resource referrals,
vital information, and other necessities.
Nationally, the Society has invested more
than $3.4 billion in cancer research,
including funding 44 Nobel Laureates
and investing $63.5 million last year in
California-based research programs.
Tickets to the OC Barons’ Ball start
at $200 per person, and table sponsorships
at various levels. For information, contact
the American Cancer Society at (949)
