TV in Great Britain
Great Britain has one of the highest
digitalisation rates in all of Europe.
About 90 percent of all viewers receive
their TV and radio signals digitally.

their free DTT and digital satellite offerings,
as well as their paid cable programming.
Growth in digital satellite TV
The combined ASTRA & Eurobird 28.5° East
position is the main distributor for the British
Isles. In addition to popular Arabic, Indian
and Far Eastern cultural fare, there are about
200 English free TV broadcasters – which, by
the way, can be picked up in western Germany
with even the small 45 cm Multytenne.
Though a few years ago most British viewers
were getting their digital satellite channels
through the large pay TV provider BSkyB, free
satellite TV reception (free to air, or FTA) has
shown considerable growth in recent years.

package called Freesat, offered by the
two largest British providers, the BBC and ITV,
which provides satellite reception completely
free of charge and access to about 80 TV and

through Freesat, unencrypted and free of charge. They
include Channel 4, E4, More 4, Five, ITV2, ITV3, BBC3,
BBC News, CBBC and CiTV. Others include channels
like Film 4, True Movies, Movies4Men, Euronews, Men
& Motors, Wedding TV, Chart Show TV and Al-Jazeera.
Freesat also transmits HDTV programs from BBC-HD
and ITV-HD. Freesat HD is only to be received in the UK.

Among their UK-wide DVB-S broadcast offerings over
Freesat, the BBC and ITV transmit interactive multimedia
background applications in the form of “Red Button
services”, along with their TV programming.
Interactive “Red Button” services
more than just TV
Besides the free programming, the latter
services have been crucial to the success of
the BBC and ITV’s Freesat package. So-called
“Red Button services” accompany the Freesat
channels (as well as the free terrestrial
DTT channels) with interactive multimedia
applications based on the promising MHEG
5 standard. The offerings range from an onscreen
calculator to an interactive weather
report with information automatically updated
from a database. The viewer accesses the
“Red Button” applications from selection lists
and by entering easy numerical codes from the
remote control.

HDFS allows use of digital photos, music and
videos from USB drives, compact flash memory
cards and an integrated computer network

Besides Freesat capability, HDFS also uses
a TechniSat operational mode that serves up
further features and functions, such as reception
of several orbit positions with a motor
drive using DiSEqC.
Sweden — a DTT trailblazer
In 1999, Sweden was the first European nation
to begin using digital terrestrial TV (DTT). As
a result, Swedish analogue service was completely
shut down between 2005 and 2007 –
months before the original target date. While
DTT was transmitted on the MPEG2 standard
in Sweden also, technology and capacity improvements
marched on. Last year this allowed
a change to the MPEG4 standard, allowing even
more channels and high-resolution HDTV to be
broadcasted.
TechniSat DiGYBOXX T4 VA
So recently TechniSat introduced the
DiGYBOXX T4 VA, a premium receiver for
Scandinavia, which receives both ordinary TV
(SD) as well as HDTV. The “VA” in DiGYBOXX
T4 VA stands for the VIACCESS integrated decoding
system, for which a smart-card reader
is included. This way, the attractive receiver,
with its fresh design, can receive both
encrypted and unencrypted programs over
an antenna. In contrast to Germany, most
Swedish channels are encrypted pay services
– even over digital satellite and over cable
TV, which is common throughout the country.
Licensed for Boxer
With these performance characteristics, the
DiGYBOXX T4 VA was also able to obtain Boxer
licensing, which is important for Scandinavia.
With about 700,000 subscribers, “Boxer
TV-Access AB” is Sweden’s largest digital pay
TV provider with a complete DTT network.
Last year Boxer also received the contract to
set up a comprehensive pay TV offering for
the newest Danish DTT network, which has
recently gone on the air. Since February 2009,
digital terrestrial (DTT) pay TV channels have
also been broadcasted there. In November,
Boxer will broaden its offerings with six more
broadcasters.

maximum program variety
Just in time for the start of DTT, the German
market leader introduced the TechniSat
HDT 4 digital receiver. It is specially made
for the requirements of digital antenna TV
in Poland. The channels TVP 1, TVP 2, TVP 3,
TVN, Polsat, TV 4 and Puls come in through
just one digital multiplex. This program variety
is possible in the narrowest possible frequency
range through the MPEG4 compression
standard, which requires up to 40 percent
less capacity per channel compared to the
MPEG2 stan dard used in Germany. In the future,
Poland will have six to eight multiplexes
available. The 7 million Polish households that
now watch only seven channels by antenna
may receive 40 to 60 digital TV channels in
SD resolution in 2012. Sound will be broadcast
exclusively in Dolby Digital.

the Polish satellite TV market. In Hungary,

of the newly developed DTT receiver. The
operating menu offers as many as ten languages.
