he times when satellite receivers lagged 

behind the cable equivalents are long 

gone. More and more households 

worldwide are already receiving digital satellite 

programmes. Thus satellite broadcasting has 

long since ceased to be a niche solution for 

rural areas. News is increasingly spreading 

around cities of the numerous advantages of 

digital satellite television, because it literally has 

the greatest number of benefits in comparison 

to all other digital means of transmission for 

viewers: 

Digital quality is of the finest, which gives 

the cable providers a hard time 

The digital and free-to-view programme 

selection via satellite is unrivalled. This means 

cultural variety, which can be accessed with 

even the most compact satellite antenna. The 

programmes reach the viewer with strikingly 

sharp images and crystal clear sound, and now, 

occasionally, with the new HDTV, including 

matchless depth of detail and Dolby digital

Welcome to the new edition of INFODIGITAL. We at TechniSat have taken it 

upon ourselves to keep our readers up-to-date and well informed about the 

world of digital today. The main topic today is: Sat in the city. 

DigitalSat: Programme 

choice with unrivalled 

image and sound quality 

The satellite domain has long been 

involved in the conversion from analogue 

to digital. Digital improves the 

quality of the images and sounds and 

moreover, the variety. 

Of all the various means of digital transmission, 

the digital satellite TV has, to 

date, achieved the greatest extent of 

digitization. DigitalSat allows you access 

to broadcasts from all around the 

world. There is quite simply no alternative 

to the huge bandwidth offered 

by satellite transmission. 

The digital transmission of image and 

sound signals not only allows digital 

radio and television to expand out of 

orbit. Satellite transmission is also the 

perfect means for data, such as programme 

information and much more, 

to be sent in digital form. With its DigiButler 

Service feature, TechniSat offers 

an entire range of digital helpers, 

which exploit this possibility.

TechniRouter simplifies 

things 

A few weeks ago, TechniSat launched 

its new TechniRouter-System onto the 

market. Normally, for the so-called 

Satblock set-up, a star-cabling is needed, 

since the satellites transmit their 

broadcasts via two so-called planes 

of polarization, meaning that each 

digital satellite receiver must be switched 

between the vertical and horizontal 

planes. For new buildings and 

renovated properties, modern power 

distribution systems have been in 

place for many years. However, there 

are, of course, also cable harnesses in 

a so-called tree structure. When the 

latter network was used, to date, the 

full range of the DigitaSat programme 

choice could not be enjoyed in its entirety. 

However, this all changes with 

the TechniRouter. The TechniRouter 

is controlled by a DigitalSat antenna 

with a Quatro receiving unit. The 

TechniRouter System by TechniSat 

currently allows up to 8 connections. 

This means that in total, it is possible 

to connect up to 8 digital satellite 

receivers or the TechniSat HD-Vision 

flat televisions directly and thus enjoy 

the entire programme range 

available via the ASTRA satellite system 

in the orbit position 19.2° East. 

The TechniRouter System also excels 

when used to feed twin receivers.

New from TechniSat: 

HDTV 32/40/46 

The firm that developed TechniSat, 

TechniSat Digital GmbH in Dresden, 

have excelled. Today the production 

of the TechniSat HDTV 40 has been 

realized. This super HDTV-LCD 

television boasts a screen size of 

102 cm (40 inches). Also available 

are HDTV sets in 32 inch (81 cm) and 

46 inch (116 cm) models. The HDTV 

flat TV from TechniSat is capable of 

receiving broadcasts transmitted in 

HDTV directly and promptly, as well 

as receiving so-called “normal” digital 

broadcasts (SDTV). Each HDTV set 

from TechniSat also comes with two 

HDTV-SD DigitalSat receiving tuners, 

as well as two DVB cable digital 

receiving units, while a further two 

tuners for DVB-T terrestrial digital 

television are also included. Finally, 

old analogue transmitted material is 

also catered for via an antenna and 

cable.

Standard and High 

Definition in one 

The DIGIT HD8-XS is a proud member 

of the „Newest“ products, and ideally 

suited for receiving HD as well as SD 

broadcasts. The integrated CONAX 

decoding system, as well as the 

smartcard and SIMcard reader are all 

built-in to the satellite receiver with 

the future and Pay TV in mind. Two 

additional CI slots for further decoding 

systems turn the DIGIT HD8-SX into 

a multimedia all-rounder. What else

TechniSat´s new Full-HDTV highlight is prepared 

for the reception of encrypted programmes 

and Pay-TV. Within the serial equipped smart- 

card reader the integrated CONAX Conditional 

Access System can be used as well, in addition, 

two Common-Interface Slots (CI) giving the possibility 

of using also different Conditional Access 

Systems together with respective CA-Modules. 

TV and more 

HDTV Vision also allows the possibility to record 

to HDD from analogue sources via SCART 

socket. HDTV Vision offers a firework of connections 

like three HDMI ports, S-Video port, 

and Cinchports for analogue Video- and Sound 

signals. In addition the TV is provided with YUV 

component input and corresponding audioconnectors. 

This is completed by VGA-connector, 

a double SCART-Connector and digital 

(optical/electrical) audio connections. A USB 

2.0 port offers the possibility of adding digital 

data-mediums like USB-Sticks or external hard 

drivers with USB connection. HDTV Vision is 

able to display music or pictures stored at external 

devices in different formats.

Vectra S.A. in Poland 

The long and successful 

business relationship between 

TechniSat Digital Sp.z.o.o. and 

Vectra S.A. will go on! 

The collaboration between TechniSat Digital 

Sp.z.o.o. and VECTRA S.A. will continue 

in 2008. TechniSat Digital Sp.z.o.o. located 

in Oberniki Slaskie near Roclaw is one of the 

affiliates of TechniSat Digital S.A. located in 

Betzdorf, Luxembourg. Both companies are 

part of the TechniSat Group headquartered 

based in Daun, Germany. 

Due to the positive development on the Polish 

market, TechniSat decided to have a production 

plant on-site to utilize the good market 

situation and to provide customers not only 

with high quality products in time, but with 

short delivery times and ways as well. 

The production of Set-Top-Boxes for satellite, 

cable and terrestrial signals has started in 

2006 and is one of the latest in Poland. In the 

meantime the number of employees comes 

up to nearly 300. The capacity of the Factory 

is around 4000 Set-Top-Boxes per day. At the 

beginning of 2008 TechniSat has decided to 

extend the product range of TechniSat Digital 

Sp.z.o.o. about their PC-products. Together 

with the production site TechniSat Digital 

Sp.z.o.o. has established a Sales Department 

which is responsible for customers on the local 

market. The Sales Team is beside the retail 

market also effective in business with local 

Operators: Especially with the 2nd largest 

cable operator in Poland - VECTRA S.A.. 


TechniSat has a good and successful relationship 

with VECTRA S.A. since 2006 which will 

be enhanced in the future. VECTRA S.A. with 

a market share of around 15% is the 2nd largest 

cable operator in Poland and also effective 

as a triple play service provider offering 

the access to TV, Internet and Telephone. 

The data referring to cable operators in Poland, 

published by the Polish Chamber of 

Electronic Communication shows that VEC- 

TRA has around 657.000 subscribers and operates 

in 137 cities (source: PIKE, March 2008). 

Nearly 83% do still use Analogue transmission 

whereas 110.000 users have already switched 

to Digital where HD technology is available. 

This kind of transmission is meanwhile offered 

in several dozen cities. 

Since the beginning of the cooperation in 

2006 TechniSat supplied Vectra S.A. with 

nearly 100.000 receivers. TechniSat could 

convince with advanced, innovated and high 

quality products. Due to the production in 

Poland TechniSat has, compared to other 

vendors, the advantage to deliver with short 

notice, in-time and in the exact quantity required 

by VECTRA´s local offices. 

All cable receivers produced for VECTRA 

comply with strict requirements concerning 

the safety level set by CONAX. 

Devices sold by TechniSat are Made in Europe 

and characterized by high quality as well as 

the latest know-how which is confirmed by 

numerously outstanding test results. 

This is one of the reasons VECTRA has decided 

to strengthen the cooperation with Techni- 

Sat Digital Sp.z.o.o. for the future. In addition 

to that TechniSat could, in April 2008, come 

up with an innovative pairing function which 

is included in the Set-Top-Boxes produced for 

VECTRA. With this TechniSat is already at the 

latest standard regarding the actual CONAX 

safety level requirements. This is one more 

reason for the long-lasting cooperation between 

TechniSat and VECTRA. 

Mr. Slawomir Topczewski, VECTRA´s CTO and 

CIO states: “The equipment delivered by 

TechniSat was developed precisely according 

to our expectations. Thanks to that the 

company goes forward with us in getting the 

majority of the Polish digital TV market!”

TechniSat Teledigital AG, located in Staßfurt/

group and from this experience, the decision 

has been taken to start the corresponding

IBC trade fair for broadcast, satellite- 

and cable reception equipment 

was an outstanding business 

venture for the company. 

In the following we want to present 

you the Highlights of the 5 days in 

Amsterdam... 

TechniSat Digital S.A. exhibits its 

products at IBC in Amsterdam for 

years. This year’s attendance shows, 

that the International Broadcast trade 

fair is getting more and more popular 

for both: exhibitors and visitors:

recorded 77.041 registrations and 

46.250 visitors attended the show, 

breaking all previous records by nearly

highlights. 

Not only the strong colours turn the 

TechniSat booth into an “eye-catcher”. 

Between the other booths, with 

unobtrusive colours, the TechniSat 

booth was in sight afar: One of the 

brand marks of the TechniSat Group. 

But also the products have attracted 

many visitors: The new TechniSat 

HDTV 46 and HDTV 40 aroused the 

interest of numerous guests, which 

were sold on the high-class design as 

well as the outstanding technology. 

In addition to HDTV, TechniSat Digital 

also presented its highlights in the 

field of PC- and Satellite Reception 

technology. In the following we will 

present our newcomers and IBC highlights

The TechniRouter is a single cable solution

Existing cable structure in residential 

buildings can be upgraded with digital 

satellite signals from a satellite 

option without any need for relaying 

of cables. The ground unit enables to 

provide up to eight attendees with the 

satellite or terrestrial signal, with interlinking 

a cascade unit the number 

of receptors can be increased to 16. 

GigaSystem 17/8 G was also one of 

our highlights presented in Amsterdam. 

This system offers the distribution 

of four satellite positions and can 

be extended to a high number of attendees. 

GigaSystem 17/8 G considers 

that beside the usage for television 

also Internet connection is receivable 

via satellite today and that just one 

satellite position is not longer up-todate. 

For sure, these products are qualified 

for the transmission of HD satellite TV! 

Due to our nice and comfortable atmosphere 

at the booth, that some of 

the visitors called to be a living room, 

combined with outstanding highquality 

products we have been able 

to welcome a lot of customers during 

the days.

In comparison to other means of digital transmission, the advantages of 

digital satellite television appear limitless. With a considerably greater choice 

of programmes than digital antenna television (DVB-T) or digital cable 

(DVB-C), with only one-time acquisition costs and optionally expandable 

transmission capacities, e.g. for HDTV or varied digital additional services,

Analogue broadcasting is set 

to be phased-out on a Europe-wide 

basis by 2012. In the 

meantime, almost all TV production 

has become digitalized. The same is 

largely true for digital TV receivers. 

Already by the first half of 2007, 

LCD flat screen televisions, in many 

cases often set up to receive high 

resolution HDTV broadcasts, were 

outselling CRT televisions for the 

first time. The trend toward a large 

area with sharp pictures has persisted 

through to the second half of 

2008. Moreover, many of the LCD 

televisions can also receive terrestrial 

digital broadcasts directly. Premium 

LCD flat screen televisions, 

e.g. like the TechniSat models in the 

HD vision family are also set up to 

receive broadcasts from analogue 

antennas and cable programmes, 

as well as programmes via Digital 

Sat (DVB-S), Digital cable (DVB-C) 

and digital via antenna without 

any additional receiver box. Of all 

the means of digital transmission 

available, the digital satellite television 

has demonstrated the highest 

grade digitalization to date. Admittedly, 

analogue broadcasts are still 

being transmitted by satellite, but 

the rate of digitalization is growing 

as we speak.

Whether you love sport or action movies

and access to paid content has 

been tested for years and functions 

in a similar way to the access to mobile 

phone networks via rechargeable 

prepaid cards. Since there are various 

decoding and encrypting systems 

available on the market, the best 

satellite receivers, as well as having 

an integrated decoding system and 

relevant Smartcard readers, they also 

incorporate common interface slots,

access to a range of access authorization

Multiple satellites with 

just a single key 

The ability to receive programmes 

from multiple satellite orbits at the 

same time with just a single key sees 

satellite television shake off the last 

of the restrictions in terms of programme 

choice. The TechniSat Multytenne,

of receiving signals from up to four 

orbit positions at the same time, and

with 720 x 560 pixels to be shown 

with less compression, which clearly 

enhances the image and sound quality.

only support for the MP3 music format 

and the widely-used JPEG image 

format, but also MPEG-2 videos, e.g. 

like those found on video CDs and 

VOB data from DVDs. This means the 

DIGIT HD8-SX can be transformed 

from an HDTV capable satellite receiver 

into a fully-equipped multimedia 

performer, capable of directly playing 

back the content of associated data 

storage devices via the TV or a connected 

stereo system. At any rate, the 

private MP3, image or video collection 

can be used as part of a home cinema 

system and this by using all applicable 

means which are currently deployed 

in home networks. 

Optimal interface set-up 

As well as its numerous multimedia interfaces, 

the DIGIT HD8-SX also offers 

an optical as well as electrical output for 

Dolby Surround-Sound in AC-3 format. 

Moreover, the HDTV capable Digital 

Receiver for receiving satellite broadcasts 

can be connected to a domestic 

Dolby system without any problem. Via 

an HDMI interface with HDCP support, 

the device can, of course, also be connected 

to HD ready screens or projectors. 

In addition, a Component Video 

output allows the transmission of HDTV 

signals in the format Y Pb Pr to projectors 

without an HDMI socket. Two SCART 

sockets serve as analogue inputs/outputs. 

These also allow older models of 

video recorders, DVD players and other 

external components to be connected. A 

video out output via Cinch completes the 

diverse set of analogue interfaces. Economical 

power consumption in Standby 

mode shows that TechniSat has also designed 

the DIGIT HD8-SX to be an optimal 

resource user. When used on the 

setting for minimum power consumption, 

the energy requirement of the device is 

even as low as 0.25 watts. 

Maximum user comfort 

Via a 16-digit alphanumeric display, 

important information, such as the programme 

name or other status notifications 

are indicated during operation. 

The convenient remote control makes it 

child‘s play for the user to access a total 

of 5000 stored programme slots for 

TV and radio programmes, three freely 

configurable favourites lists, and over 40 

programme lists pre-sorted by genre. The

Principle behind receiving 

satellite signals 

To receive incidental television signals, 

which are transmitted via satellite, on 

the one hand we have the concave 

antenna and on the other, the aforementioned 

(round) LNB, in which frequencies, 

thanks to the way the curve 

is constructed almost as in a burning 

glass. When learning physics (optics) 

in school, we all doubtless vaguely remember, 

that the angle of incidence is 

also the angle of reflection. The same 

ratio applies to the incident signals: 

each satellite has a specific position 

in the orbit and thus transmits its relevant 

“Footprint” onto the correspondingly 

positioned antenna. Since the 

myriad range of satellites around the 

world each have different orbit positions, 

their signal angles also vary and 

can consequently not all be picked up

Super high class LNB 

The exceptional feature included on this mini antenna is actually not 

the dish or construction thereof, but the oval digital-capable LNB 

(Low Noise Block (Converter) – low-noise (frequency converter).

based on the Europe-wide applicable 

existing standard. 

Perfect handling thanks 

to the DigiButler service 

Delivered along with the TechniSat 

HDTV 40 is also the newly designed 

LCD comfort remote control, which 

gives you swift and comfortable access 

to all the functions offered by 

the HDTV 40. The integrated DigiButler 

service, representing a collection 

of premium digital services, 

guarantees users maximum comfort 

and user-friendly service at any 

time. The autoinstall function leads 

the viewer step by step from the 

initial set-up and with the necessary 

settings made. The remote control 

is initially used to select the desired 

language environment from the 14 

available languages*. The indication 

of one of 19 possible locations 

in and around Europe is used to 

then confirm the time zone as well 

as the presorting of the programme 

list. As you progress further, among 

other things, the relevant receiving 

signals are also specified. In addition, 

the ISIPRO digital programme 

list manager allows you to maintain 

the current status of all available 

satellite and cable programmes 

even without searching. Based on 

the configuration, the HDTV 40 then 

searches through further wavebands 

and reception areas, including from 

DVB-T to VHF radio for receivable 

channels. Based on the choice of 

the preferred regional programmes,

The device also includes an electronic 

programme information service. This 

premium service receives continually 

updated programme information via 

satellite (ASTRA 19.2° East) from 

more than 70 TV broadcasters. One 

press on the SFI button of the remote 

control shows an overview of the current 

broadcasts on the channels of the 

adjusted programme list. One touch 

on the green function button provides 

details of the daily programmes of the 

selected broadcaster. If you use the 

arrow keys to select a programme, 

pressing the OK button another time 

calls up a programme description, 

which often includes images on the 

selected programme – just like a 

normal television magazine. Here, 

the programme preview section also 

covers a period of up to seven days. 

The TechniSat HDTV 40 also has serial 

equipment in the shape of an internal 

250 GB hard disc drive. This 

can be used to record TV and radio 

programmes directly from the LCD 

television and then play them back. 

The record functions of the HDTV 40, 

likewise, have been directly incorporated 

into the electronic programme 

guide. This means programmes can 

be pre-marked for recording in a 

small number of steps. If desired, it is 

also possible to specify preliminary 

or follow-up time, to ensure the entire 

programme is recorded, even if the 

transmission is earlier or lasts longer 

than normal. Audio tracks, subtitles or 

video text are saved along with the 

actual programmes. This means that 

when subsequently retrieved, all the 

relevant information will have been

also supports time-delayed TV viewing

Retrofitting of existing 

receiving units 

Analogue systems for receiving satellite 

broadcasts can usually be retrofitted 

problem-free with their own 

intrinsic energy. For anyone who is 

unsure whether their own satellite 

system is suited for digital receiving 

or not, it is worth contacting a specialist 

for advice. The retrofitting only requires 

the exchange of two parts: First 

the analogue satellite receiver (also 

known as the receiver or set-top box) 

and also the LNB (Low Noise Block 

Converter), which, from a technical 

perspective, represents the actual 

receiving unit for the transmission of 

radio waves from the orbit. We will 

cover the selection of a suitable satellite 

receiver in a moment, but what 

does the mysterious acronym LNB actually 

stand for? The LNB represents 

the receiving section of the parabolic 

antenna. It is located in front of the 

satellite dish and mounted on a small 

extension arm. This is also a piece to 

be exchanged, and then to reconnect 

the cable/s leading from there 

to the receiving unit (receiver). Since 

the connection of the cable is usually 

made via the conventional F-plug, 

which is also included on the receiver 

itself, the procedure can usually be

free line of sight to the geostationary 

satellite located in the sky, namely remaining 

in the same position relative 

to the earth, there are more aesthetic 

solutions. One of these includes the 

horizontal assembly of the satellite 

dish, whereby the parabolic antenna 

can be assembled “head first” whereby 

the entire structure requires minimal 

headroom. From the outside, this 

type of balcony installation is almost 

invisible. In particular, in the case of 

rented accommodation, it makes 

sense to channel the cables required 

via the so-called window openings.

Orientation of the parabolic

After operation has been carried out 

on the satellite antenna, a re-adjustment 

may be required. When adjusting 

the orientation of the receiving

Selecting the correct 

receiver 

If you have decided upon making the

The revolution in the satellite retrofitting 

For many people, digital satellite television is a cost-effective alternative to cable television, 

which offers many advantages. With the newly-developed TechniSat TechniRouter, the same 

also applies now for older buildings with conventional cabling for analogue television – for an 

unrestricted choice of programmes for all parties concerned. 

For conventional analogue television 

received via antenna as well as 

analogue cable, previously, for the 

distribution of antenna signals to multiple 

parties, individual lengths of cable were 

required with several sockets connected 

in series – so-called single cable solutions. 

Since the advent of digital television, a 

new type of distribution structure for TV 

signals has been implemented: For modern 

cabling used for digital television, the 

current solution consists instead of starshaped 

arrangements - this applies to the 

connection of multiple parties to a single 

satellite system via multiple LNBs or satellite 

distributors (multiswitches). 

The changed circumstances have made 

it difficult, to date, to implement a simple 

and cost-effective conversion of old 

buildings with conventional DigitalSat 

cable structures. Single cable structures 

were only usable when complicated 

technology was deployed and used to 

distribute digital satellite programmes.

With the new TechniRouter, TechniSat provides 

exactly that. For with this device, existing 

single cable solutions within living 

spaces can be converted to receive digital 

satellite signals without the need for new 

cabling. This is not only important for 

buildings and homes, for whom tenancy 

law means only a common satellite receiving 

system is feasible or for whom no new 

cabling is possible. In particular, also for 

smaller homes, the new TechniRouter

Intelligent technology 

At the core of the new technology is the 

TechniRouter 5. Within the frequency 

range assigned to satellite signals (950- 

2150 MHz), this emits eight output frequencies, 

via which the individual parties 

can then receive unrestricted access to 

the comprehensive range of programmes 

transmitted digitally via satellite. For this 

purpose, it uses specific control commands 

(DiSEqC), which have been implemented 

in line with the European directive 

EN 50494. The device is connected 

in the same way as a normal satellite distributor 

e.g. to the storage device via the 

Quatro LNB of the satellite system. The 

central antenna cable e.g. of an analogue 

antenna system, is then simply connected

founded in 

1987 by Peter Lepper, 

with the objective of 

producing high-quality 

satellite reception products for consumers. 

The decision to establish our own 

development and production in Germany 

was made as early as 1990. The 

high quality standard TechniSat sets 

itself, is evident in the products as well 

as in development and production: 

an eye is kept not only on functionality 

and ease of use, but also on environmental 

considerations. 

The wide range of 

products 

Over the time the range of products 

offered has been continually expanded. 

Apart from satellite antennas, the 

whole product range of digital receivers 

for the various international 

markets was added. Today, TechniSat 

produces digital receivers for the reception 

of digital satellite, cable and 

terrestrial (DVB-S/-C/-T) television. In 

addition, the TechniSat range of products 

includes multiswitches, head stations, 

accessories for installation, etc. 

Furthermore, TechniSat has been able 

to establish itself as a leading quality 

producer in the fields of LCD and cathode 

tube TV sets, car communications 

– car radios and navigation systems – 

as well as PC components, securing a 

significant market share in Germany.

Distribution is effected via authorized 

TechniSat retailers. The TechniSat service 

and distribution centres support 

more than 14.000 retailers all over 

Germany and Europe. TechniSat Digital 

S.A. is responsible for worldwide 

exports of TechniSat products. It has 

its international headquarters in Betz- 

dorf/Luxembourg and is responsible 

for the international sales of Technisat 

Digital Group which currently 

employs 1,500 people in production 

facilities and R&D departments in Germany 

and throughout Europe.
