Educational events <strong>and</strong> activities<br />

You may attend educational events or activities – such as an all-day "wine school" – put on by<br />

a liquor manufacturer or agent. You may accept payment from the liquor manufacturer or<br />

agent for legitimate travel, meal, accommodation, <strong>and</strong> entertainment expenses associated with<br />

the educational event, up to $1,000 per licensee location per year. If you have multiple<br />

licensed establishments - a chain of licensee retail stores, for example - you may also accept<br />

expenses of $1,000 per person to a maximum of $3,000 per head office per year.<br />

Hospitality<br />

A liquor manufacturer or agent may pay for your hospitality expenses not associated with an<br />

educational event, at a rate of up to $1,000 per licensee location per year.<br />

Relations with Liquor Manufacturers <strong>and</strong> Agents: A Summary<br />

(Please review chapter for exact details)<br />

Activities not permitted:<br />

Accept a benefit, including money, items, products or services, from a<br />

manufacturer/agent for selling a particular liquor product.<br />

Operate as a tied house (unless approved by the branch)<br />

Activities permitted at any time:<br />

Accept promotional items of nominal value from a manufacturer/agent,<br />

such as coasters or tent cards<br />

Buy promotional items such as br<strong>and</strong>ed shirts, caps or key chains from a<br />

manufacturer/agent at fair market value <strong>and</strong> re-sell them to patrons<br />

Accept product samples from a manufacturer/agent<br />

Honour product vouchers from a manufacturer/agent.<br />

Accept value-added promotional items from a manufacturer/agent that are<br />

not also available at government liquor stores (provided you follow liquor<br />

Distribution Branch <strong>guide</strong>lines)<br />

Conduct a contest with a manufacturer/agent (provided you follow Liquor<br />

Distribution Branch <strong>guide</strong>lines)<br />

Conduct a consumer tasting with a manufacturer/agent<br />

Borrow from a manufacturer/agent more expensive promotional items,<br />

such as umbrellas, mirrors or menu boards, <strong>and</strong> temporary display<br />

structures <strong>and</strong> related promotional items<br />

Accept from a manufacturer/agent T-shirts, hats <strong>and</strong> other promotional<br />

clothing items to give away to patrons<br />

Attend educational events <strong>and</strong> activities put on by a manufacturer/agent<br />

<strong>and</strong> accept payment from the liquor manufacturer for your travel <strong>and</strong> other<br />

costs<br />

Accept payment from a manufacturer/agent for hospitality costs not<br />

associated with an educational event or activity<br />
