The Governor acknowledged that agriculture is vital to the state’s economy. The $40-billion food and agriculture industry employs approximately 160,000 people and contributes 12 percent to the state’s economy. In fact, Yakima, Grant and Benton counties are traditionally the largest ag producing areas in the state. The wheat industry alone generated nearly $1 billion in production value in 2010. While each group represented their own interests, they were united on opposing the removal of ag’s tax exemptions. They agreed that any solution to the state budget crisis must be fair across all industries and citizens. 6 WHEAT LIFE JANUARY 2012
