About us
Our Service
Our child and adolescent national and specialist
service includes a range of outpatient clinics and five
inpatient units, located at the Maudsley Hospital in
Camberwell, the Bethlem Royal Hospital in Beckenham
and Woodland House in Staplehurst. Our services are
renowned nationally and internationally, with clinical
practice that thrives on links with the Institute of
Psychiatry, King’s College London and the Medical
Research Council Child Psychiatry Unit.
Our clinical teams are fully committed to multidisciplinary,
comprehensive assessments of young
people within their family and social context,
taking into account their academic achievements
and potential. This enables us to develop a clear
understanding of any problems and possible solutions.
We have a strong tradition of evidence-based
treatment; our clinicians and academics have
contributed to many of the NICE guideline panels,
including obsessive compulsive disorder, attention
deficit hyperactivity disorder, post-traumatic stress
disorder and conduct disorder.
We are active in clinical research; developing, assessing
and implementing effective new treatments like multifamily
groups for eating disorders and computerdelivered
treatments for depression. Many teams
have aspects of their clinical, teaching or research
work funded at a national level.
We recognise that the physical clinical environment is
an important part of treatment and we are proud of
our ward and clinical spaces, which we’ve developed
through extensive consultation with young people and
their families. Our clinics are equipped with some of
the latest audiovisual equipment and videoconferencing
facilities, which are used to link with national and
international partner institutions, patients’ schools,
and other clinics, in situations where assessment and
treatment need to be delivered further afield.
We also offer training programmes and service
development support for mental health professionals
both nationally and internationally.
“ All the time that you invested in her has really
led to a happier human being. From our point
of view and probably yours too, I don’t think
there is any greater reward than that.”
About us
South London and Maudsley
NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM)
Institute of Psychiatry
King’s Health Partners
SLaM offers the most extensive portfolio of mental
health services in the United Kingdom, supported
by internationally recognised training and research.
Each year, 5000 people receive hospital treatment,
and 32,000 receive outpatient care.
We are the only mental health trust in the UK to host
a Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) with a special focus
on children and adolescents, which is pioneering the
translation of scientific developments into new ways
of screening, detecting, treating and preventing mental
illness. The BRC is managed in partnership with the
Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London, and
funded by the National Institute for Health Research.
We are focused on promoting mental health and wellbeing,
rather than simply responding to severe mental
illness. The Trust is focusing on early intervention and
supporting children and young people with mental
health problems at an early stage in their lives.
Visit www.slam.nhs.uk
We are proud of our unique clinical and academic
partnership with the adjacent Institute of Psychiatry,
part of King’s College London. The Institute is the
largest academic community in Europe devoted to
the study and prevention of mental health problems.
Working together means that lessons learnt from
research are translated directly into better treatment
locally, throughout the United Kingdom, and
internationally. Many of our National and Specialist
CAMHS services are led by academics, helping the
translation of research into practice.
Visit www.iop.kcl.ac.uk
SLaM has joined with King’s College London, Guy’s
and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and King’s
College NHS Foundation Trust to establish King’s
Health Partners, an Academic Health Sciences
Centre (AHSC).
As one of only five AHSCs in the United Kingdom,
we deliver healthcare to patients and undertake
health-related science and research. We also have
a well-developed role in teaching and education.
Our aim is to create a centre where world-class
research, teaching and clinical practice are brought
together for the benefit of patients. We want to make
sure that the lessons from research are used more
swiftly, effectively and systematically to improve
healthcare services for people with physical and
mental health problems.
At the same time as competing on the international
stage, our focus remains on providing the local
community with the very best care that the NHS has
to offer. King’s Health Partners is bringing real and
lasting benefits to the communities of south London.
Local people will continue to benefit from access to
worldleading healthcare experts and clinical services
which are underpinned by the latest research
knowledge. There are also benefits for the local area
in regeneration, education, jobs and economic growth.
SLaM’s services are organised into Clinical Academic
Groups (CAGs). The creation of CAGs involves
bringing people together who are experts in their field
– whether that’s cancer care, dementia or diabetes –
so that we can offer patients the very best care and
treatment, based upon reliable research evidence. This
involves clinical staff like doctors and nurses working
alongside academic researchers much more closely
than ever before. And it means that patients will
receive a high quality service.
There are eight CAGs involving mental health
services, teaching and research:
• Addictions
• Behavioural and developmental psychiatry
• Child and adolescent mental health services
• Clinical neurosciences
• Mental health of older adults and dementia
• Mood, anxiety and personality
• Psychological medicine
• Psychosis
Inpatient care

Acorn Lodge Children’s Unit
Location: Bethlem Royal Hospital
Mode: Inpatient, day patient
Average length of inpatient treatment: 80 days
Beds: 10
Children in education at the time of
admission to Acorn Lodge was 52%,
compared to 93% at the time of
discharge. Bethlem Hospital School 2009-10
We scored 99% in the Quality
Network for Inpatients CAMHS visit.
March 2012
We offer assessment and treatment for children aged
between four and 13 years old, who have a wide range
of severe emotional or behavioural disorders, including
neurodevelopmental disorders and very early-onset
psychosis. We adopt a flexible model, allowing us to
accept emergency admissions.
Our staff are from a variety of specialised backgrounds,
including child psychiatry, clinical psychology, nursing,
social work and occupational therapy. Education is provided
on site by specialist teaching staff at the Bethlem Royal
Hospital school.
Our unit works closely with families to understand their child’s
needs, the impact of the child on other family members, and
of the family on the child. Our treatment is based around
a weekly, five-day model, allowing the child to spend the
weekend at home if possible. In some cases, children require
a seven-day provision at certain stages during their admission
to enhance their recovery. We believe this flexible model
is very important for both the child and the family to help
minimise the time away from home, and also to try
interventions within a community setting.
Patient discharge is carefully planned and managed through
the CAMHS care programme approach, adapted for Acorn
Lodge patients. Our unit works closely with referrers to
develop a safe, tailored discharge plan with risk assessment
and appropriate relapse and crisis planning.
We scored 96% in the Quality
(QNIC) visit. May 2009
We are an open adolescent unit offering mental health care
for adolescents with a serious mental illness, who require
hospital admission. We have developed a national and
international reputation for innovation and have a
comprehensive, all hours emergency admission service.
The majority of the young people we treat are emergency
admissions, however planned admissions can also be arranged.
Admissions are accepted 24 hours a day, 365 days a year,
including admissions under the Mental Health Act.
Approximately half of the young people admitted to our
unit have psychosis. Others have problems relating to their
mood and often pose a risk to themselves. We are also
able to admit young people with a variety of other
psychiatric or neurodevelopmental disorders, or where
there is diagnostic uncertainty.
As we are an open unit, we are unable to admit young
people who pose a level of risk that is not consistent with
being cared for in such an environment. This judgement
is always based on an individual risk assessment rather than
applying absolute exclusion criteria, and is reviewed
regularly. People requiring care in a more secure setting
can be admitted to the unit later if the risk has reduced.
We provide a range of interventions, which are delivered
by a team of psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, teachers,
occupational therapists, social workers and other therapists.
We maintain close links with the person’s referring team
to ensure they experience a smooth transition back to
the community. Day treatment is often used as a stepdown
service and can sometimes be used to avoid
admission altogether.
“ I started coming to the Anxiety Service
because I had panic attacks and problems
going to school and getting out to places…
I have learnt a lot of strategies here and have
overcome a lot of my difficulties. I learnt how
to control my breathing, how to reason with
my thoughts, how to look for evidence for
my thoughts (drawing charts and diagrams
to help). I have learnt how to get my worry
level down, and have compared my scores
on some questionnaires to old times and
seen how well I have done.” Former patient, age 11
Assessment
Assessment involves face-to-face interviews with the young person
and their parents (both separately and together), by a clinical
psychologist. The session includes a semi-structured diagnostic
interview for ICD-10 and DSM-IV disorders, and standardised self
and parent reported measures of symptoms and functionality. The
assessment may include a standardised assessment of intellectual and
academic attainment. A comprehensive report detailing the diagnostic
formulation, treatment and care recommendations is provided.
Treatment Treatment is offered on a weekly basis, with sessions between 60
and 90 minutes. Length of individual sessions and treatment follows
clinical need, but treatment generally lasts between six and 14
sessions. Treatment is provided by clinical psychologists specialising
in cognitive and behavioural approaches, who are also clinical
researchers and CBT trainers.
Consultation
Consultation with clinical services is offered on assessment methods
(including selection of appropriate measures), formulation
(including differential diagnosis), care planning and treatment, service
development and training. Consultation may also involve meeting
at our clinic, the young person’s local area, over the phone or via email.
Our service is for young people with neurodevelopmental
disorders and intellectual disability where challenging
behaviour is a primary concern. Challenging behaviour
includes aggression directed at themselves or others, severe
non-compliance and significant destructive behaviour.
We see young people across the intellectual ability spectrum.
A systematic assessment of causes of challenging behaviour
includes consideration of learnt behaviour, co-morbid
psychiatric disorders, predisposing neurocognitive
characteristics and physical problems.
We work closely with referrers to identify the most
Child Care Assessment Service Evaluation, 2009
We see children, young people and their families who are
undergoing care proceedings in public or private courts.
Our team also has agreements with some local authorities
to undertake a set number of assessments per year,
including consultation and pre-proceedings assessment.
We provide assessments and court reports for children and
their parents or carers. We also include members of the
extended family and foster carers, where appropriate.
Criteria
We provide detailed assessments of parenting, the quality
of relationships and attachments within the family, the
mental health or diagnosis of the children and mental health
screening of adults to include personality disorder, substance
misuse and forensic history.
Our assessment is tailored to the questions raised by the
court, and includes psychiatric, psychological and social
work interviews. This may include individual child and parent
interviews for couples, and siblings or family interviews.
As well as interviews with foster carers and schools.
Our team provides a comprehensive report for the court,
with recommendations on placement needs, contact
arrangements, education and treatment needs. The lead
clinician writing the report attends court to give evidence
upon request.
Service level agreements are negotiated with local boroughs
if required.
Eligibility
• Families with children up to 18 years old
• Male or female, adults and children
• Families undergoing public or private law proceedings
• Any members of a family (children, adolescents or parents) requiring a psychological or psychiatric report (or both)
Consultation
Our assessments take place for one day per week over a three to four week
period and involves the whole family. We regularly request information from
schools and other professionals involved with the family. We provide a detailed
formulation of each family member’s needs, including risk assessment and risk
management plans. The assessment process involves interviews and questionnaires
completed with family members and other professionals, detailed observations
of contact, and a multidisciplinary case discussion.
An average adult assessment takes approximately 35 hours and an average
child or adolescent assessment is 25 hours.
Comprehensive reports are provided, which address questions raised by the
court. Our reports include recommendations on placement options, educational
and treatment needs, and contact arrangements.
Once our reports have been filed with the court, we hold professional meetings
in order to assist with the care planning for the children. At these meetings we
present our findings and formulations, including any risk management issues.
We also provide advice on care planning.
The lead clinician for each case is the person who attends court on behalf
of the team.
We provide consultation to local authorities in pre-proceeding cases. This is to
help the referrer consider and formulate the case, and provide guidance for the
next steps. This may include things like, whether or not a comprehensive
assessment is required, whether safeguarding procedures need to be put
in place and whether the adults require psychiatric assessments.
Cognitive behavioral therapy in children and adolescents with PTSD:
A preliminary randomized controlled trial. Journal of the American
Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, 46, 1051-1061
Our service is for young people with difficulties arising from
exposure to traumatic and severely stressful events. We offer
specialist diagnostic assessments to identify post-traumatic
stress responses, including post-traumatic stress disorder
(PTSD), complicated bereavement reactions, and other
anxiety and depressive conditions.
Where post-traumatic symptoms are present and require
treatment, we offer consultation on treatment, traumafocused
CBT, eye movement desensitisation and
reprocessing therapy.
Our research leads the way in improving and disseminating
evidence-based treatments for traumatised young people
and their families. People seen in our clinic are often invited
to participate in ongoing research projects.
We also provide professional training in the assessment
and treatment of post-traumatic responses in young people
and families.
“ I could not make myself stop thinking about
the crash. I was just too afraid to talk about
it with anyone. Now the pictures, the dreams,
the guilty thoughts are gone. I know I have
been through something horrible and I will
always miss my friend, but I can get on with
my life again.” Charles, age 16
“ I was devastated when I got the call at work
saying that Charles and his friend were in
a fatal car accident. I thought my son had
been killed. I never thought that I might have
PTSD too. Thank you for helping Charles and
for getting me the help I needed.” Mother of Charles
Our service provides assessment and treatment programmes
for young people with chronic fatigue syndrome. We offer
evidence-based treatments that are routinely evaluated.
Our goal is to increase the young person’s functioning and
reduce the severity of their fatigue.
Following family-focused CBT, 70%
of young people are back at school
for at least 70% of the time.
This is a comprehensive assessment with two team members, the
young person and their family with additional team members who
contribute to the discussion, formulation and treatment planning.
This assessment may also require additional structured assessments
e.g. psychometric testing, Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule
(ADOS), and may require several meetings. It also includes discussions
with the paediatricians and liaison with the school. We provide a
diagnostic formulation and treatment plan.
Treatment involving approximately 20 sessions of CBT or graded
exercise therapy with a psychotherapist or clinical psychologist, to help
the young person become less functionally impaired and fatigued.
Young people are offered follow-up appointments at three-monthly
Our service specialises in the assessment and treatment
of young people who have a history of self-harm and
symptoms associated with borderline personality disorder
such as impulsiveness, unstable relationships, anger,
difficulties controlling emotions and feelings of emptiness.
We provide assessment, treatment, consultation and
training. Treatment involves individual therapy and group
skills training for the young person. The young person’s
parents or carers also take part in group skills training.
Assessment
Pre-treatment
Treatment
A comprehensive assessment with the young person and their
parents or carers, to clarify diagnostic status, in particular whether
the young person meets criteria for emerging borderline personality
disorder. Self-harm behaviours and suitability for DBT are assessed.
An assessment report is sent to the young person, their parents
or carers and the referrer.
A series of up to six individual sessions with the young person to
orientate them to DBT, assess and strengthen motivation, clarify
and prioritise goals of treatment, and for the young person to
decide whether they wish to commit to DBT.
Consists of weekly individual work and group skills training for the
we offer multi-family therapy (MFT) for anorexia, which
we received the Positive Practice award from the National
Institute for Mental Health in England, 2004. The MFT
programme for anorexia involves an initial intensive four-day
multi-family workshop, with further follow-up group
meetings over nine months. Feedback from families has
been very positive, with many emphasising the collaborative
nature of the treatment. The high user satisfaction is
reflected in a drop-out rate of less than three per cent.
Our service is renowned nationally and internationally
for our clinical and research evaluation of psychological
treatments for eating disorders. We have specialist
knowledge of eating disorders, with expertise in both
individual and family therapy. We help patients and their
families explore the nature of the eating disorder and the
impact it is having on the young person, their family and
ways in which the family can help the young person
overcome their problems.
We recently completed a large multi-centre treatment study
evaluating MFT. Funded by the Health Foundation, this has
provided empirical evidence for the efficacy of this approach.
We also offer MFT for bulimia nervosa, a once-a-week
programme for 20 weeks, integrating a variety of
psychotherapeutic approaches combining individual and
group formats.
Our service offers an intensive treatment programme (ITP)
for anorexia nervosa and eating disorder not otherwise
specified. This is a nine-week programme, running from
Monday to Friday, consisting of group, family and
educational input tailored to each person’s specific needs.
Young people with behavioural
problems have increased rates of
underlying emotional and
developmental problems, as well as
learning difficulties. These problems
often go undiagnosed as the
difficulties may be masked by the
young person’s difficult behaviour.
Dimond, C., Floyd, A., and Misch, P. (2004). Key Elements of
Effective Practice – Mental Health, Source document. London:
Youth Justice Board.
We provide specialist forensic services, treating complex and
high risk cases. Many of the young people we work with are
vulnerable, and present with severe psychopathology.
Young people referred to us may be involved with the
criminal justice system or be at high risk of being so
in the future. They are likely to present with behavioural
problems like violence and aggression towards others,
harming themselves, fire setting or engaging in sexually
inappropriate behaviour.
We provide a fast-track service for cases requiring
an urgent response because of the nature of the presenting
problem or, in some cases, the time limits imposed by
criminal proceedings. We conduct home and community
assessments where appropriate.
Interventions which may be provided
• Assessments involving structured diagnostic interviews,
psychometry, risk assessment, risk formulation and
treatment recommendations
• Support and partnership work with community CAMHS
and other agencies, to help manage risk and complex
behavioural difficulties
• Medico-legal assessments and reports for criminal proceedings
• Offence-related interventions for anger management,
violence reduction, sexual offending and dangerous fire
setting behaviour
• Trauma-related interventions
• Consultation and care planning for forensic cases in
outlying secure facilities
Outcomes
• Completion of structured risk assessment
• Identification of protective factors (mitigating risk)
• Provision of risk management strategy
• Involvement of the young person and their family
Assessment
Treatment
This includes a detailed assessment of the young person’s mental
health or behavioural problem. The young person is seen with their
family in the clinic setting and at home. School observations are also
carried out, if needed. A mental state assessment, neuropsychometric
assessment and function analysis of the young person’s behaviour
is undertaken. The case is then formulated with a differential
diagnosis being reached and recommendations made for intervention
and treatment. A written report is provided.
Some assessments may require a school or home visit, or additional
psychometric tests which will incur additional charges of £296 per
appointment, up to a maximum of £888.
Sessions are offered on a regular basis, both at home and in the
outpatient setting. A young person usually requires between eight
and 12 sessions. Regular reviews are provided and there is close
liaison with the young person’s referrers, their school and others
We provide neuropsychological assessment and treatment
to young people with neurological, medical,
neurodevelopmental and psychiatric conditions, including:
• Neurodevelopmental disorders (ADHD, autistic spectrum
disorder or learning disabilities)
• Acquired brain injury (epilepsy, stroke, traumatic brain
• Medical conditions affecting central nervous system
function (sickle cell, thalasaemia renal and liver disorders)
• Memory, attention, or language problems that impair
functioning, but for which the causes are unknown
problem, together with strategies that have been shown
to improve cognitive, educational, emotional, behavioural
and social difficulties.
Outpatient
Assessment
Treatment
The assessment lasts for approximately eight hours and if complex
may be split across two appointments. It includes interviews with the
young person and their parents or carers to obtain their view of the
problem. Neuropsychological tests provide a profile of the young
person’s strengths and difficulties. Emotional, social and behavioural
functioning is quantified using self-report measures. A report about
the young person’s presentation is given to the referrer, family or court.
Some assessments may require a school or home visit, or additional
psychometric tests which incur additional charges of £296 per
appointment, up to a maximum of £888.
Our treatment sessions meet the needs of the young person,
their family and school, these may include:
people with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and
related conditions, including body dysmorphic disorder, tic
disorders, Tourette’s syndrome, anxiety and habit disorders,
including trichotillomania. We also assess and treat OCD
related anxiety disorders in young people with
a developmental disorder, e.g. high functioning autism
spectrum disorders or neurological conditions.
We provide a range of evidence-based care packages,
Many of the young people we see are offered individual CBT,
which may involve parents or carers and other family members.
We have an active research programme and are committed
to increasing knowledge and understanding of the disorders
we treat, and developing our treatments to help improve
the outcomes for young people with OCD. We offer treatment
as part of a trial to the majority of young people we see.
Treatment trials provide the same package of care, but
under more controlled protocols.
We also offer an extensive programme of training and
consultancy in the assessment, treatment and management
of different aspects of OCD through seminars, workshops,
individual case supervision and research project supervision.
National Specialist
Commissioning
Team
These packages may include medication management, educational
or school liaison, and family work, where appropriate.
Sessions can be undertaken intensively or over a period of time.
Inpatient care can take the form of day patient attendance or a brief,
tailored admission. Both options allow joint working between our
service and our adolescent units. We offer a CBT programme that
runs in conjunction with the adolescent unit programme of education,
weekly reviews and other therapy sessions.
In some cases it may be appropriate for the young person to receive
treatment through their local service, for example if they are already
engaged with a therapist, or if the distance from our clinic
precludes the possibility of attending regular sessions. In these
cases, ongoing consultation and case supervision can be offered
to the local team. Families are required to attend an assessment
at the clinic.
There is a national service for children and adults with severe
and treatment-resistant OCD, funded by the National Specialist
Commissioning Team (NSCT). Our clinic is a designated centre for
adolescents and the eligibility criteria for this service is below:
• Severe OCD (CYBOCS score = 30 or above)
• Previous treatment with CBT
• Previous treatment with medication
Any young person fulfilling these criteria can be referred
The extended and second opinion assessment involves a consultant
psychiatrist and another member from our team and includes liaison
with the young person’s school and any other professionals involved
in their care. This assessment may extend over two sessions.
This is a comprehensive assessment with two team members, the
young person and their family, with additional team members
behind a one-way screen, who contribute to the discussion,
formulation and treatment planning. This assessment may also
require additional structured assessments, e.g. psychometric testing,
the autism diagnostic observation schedule (ADOS) and may require
several meetings. It also includes discussions with the paediatricians
Training programmes

Centre for Parent and Child Support
Location: Maudsley Hospital
Mode: Training and service delivery
Our team leads the national and international dissemination
of the Family Partnership Model (FPM) and the Empowering
Parents, Empowering Communities (EPEC). We provide
workforce change programmes, training and supervision in
FPM and associated approaches like the Helping Families
Programme (HPP), antenatal and postnatal promotional
guides and the EPEC programme.
Family Partnership Model
The Family Partnership Model is an evidence-based approach
that demonstrates how specific practitioner qualities and
skills, when used in partnership, enables parents and families
to overcome their difficulties, build strengths and resilience
and achieve improved outcomes.
It is recognised internationally as an exemplar of effective
partnership working and user-centred practice in health,
education and social services. Its effectiveness has been
demonstrated through a number of research trials
conducted by the Centre as well as independent randomised
trials; with findings indicating positive benefits to service
outcomes, the developmental progress of children, parentchild
interaction and the psychological functioning of
parents, families and children.
Our workforce change and developmental programmes
consist of practitioner training, consultation and supervision,
and are commissioned by a wide range of organisations,
including acute and mental health NHS Trusts, children’s
services, schools and local authorities. We develop an
individual plan for each commissioning organisation based
on needs and objectives.
Empowering Parents, Empowering Communities
EPEC provides a system for training and supervising peerled
parenting groups for parents of children aged two to 11
years (Being a Parent),and parents of teenagers aged 12 to
16 years (Living with Teenagers). within a local community.
These peer-led parenting courses help parents to learn
practical communication skills for everyday life and develop
their abilities to bring up confident, happy and co-operative
children. The programmes use discussion groups and role play,
where new skills can be practicedin a supportive environment.
Free crèches are provided alongside each group and parents
attending the course can choose to gain accreditation for their
work through the Open College Network.
Data from our recently completed randomised control trial
indicates that this peer-led parenting intervention is popular
and effective at improving parenting competencies and
reducing child behaviour problems.
Helping Families programme
The HFP aims to improve the outcomes of children who live
in some of the most complex and disadvantaged families in
the UK. It is targeted at those families with multiple
problems, where chaotic parenting is likely to give rise to
disruptive anti-social behaviour. The HFP targets parent’s
behaviour, cognition and emotional regulation.
We offer practitioners a Learn and Change programme as
part of the HFP. It offers practitioners an evidence-based
foundation to support and enhance existing practice when
working with difficult families. The programme is designed
to achieve sustainability for both practitioners and
organisations. And initial introduction to the underpinning
knowledge, frameworks and principles is followed by
progressive theory and skill sets, to facilitate practice
integration, workforce development and capacity building.
The Family Partnership Model has played a
pivotal role in consolidating a developing
our service. The impact of the FPM training
was so significant, it contributed to wider
training of the children’s services workforce
in our borough. Wandsworth Council 2010
“ The Family Partnership Model supervision
model has already changed my practice.
The structure it provides covers a wide range
of issues and it clarifies contract and case
formulation.” Course participant, 2009
Supervision
We provide skilled supervision for practitioners using the FPM in their work,
and managers implementing service redesign based on the approach. It is
appropriate for frontline practitioners working directly with families, or for
people who are acting as supervisors, facilitators or trainers. We can provide
supervision on a one-to-one basis or in groups, in a face-to-face situation,
telephone or video conference. This service may be commissioned by
organisations or individuals and the content, length, number and frequency
of sessions is negotiated to suit the needs of the participants.
Consultancy
We offer a range of consultancy options to organisations considering or
already using the FPM in their work. Consultancy can encompass any area
of implementation: application of family partnership to work, service structure,
training, supervision, evaluation, research, integration and maintenance.
Flexible packages are available to meet people’s needs.
We provide an accredited 10-day course to prepare peer facilitators to be able
to lead parenting groups using the Being a Parent approach. During the training,
parent participants are introduced and participate in the Being a Parent
programme, which covers key parenting topics including parent and child
self-esteem, managing feelings, understanding behaviour, child-centred listening
and play skills, setting limits and positive behaviour management. The participants
then concentrate on the key knowledge and skills required to facilitate the Being
a Parent course, such as the skills and qualities for supporting parents and their
parenting skills, skills and methods for coping with children’s behaviour, group
work theory and practice, and ethical issues in parenting programmes.
Location: Maudsley Hospital
Mode: Training programme, clinical supervision,
service development
We provide training in single and multiple family therapy
approaches, the treatment of child and adolescent eating
disorders for individuals or small groups of professionals,
and team-based outreach training for larger groups.
Our multi-family therapy (MFT) treatment training is relevant
not only to clinicians working with eating disorders, but to
those working with other mental health problems like
obsessive compulsive disorder, substance misuse, depression,
school refusal and psychosis.
We offer follow-up consultation and ongoing supervision
on multi-family therapy and single family-based treatments.
We also provide consultations to clinicians, managers and
commissioners wishing to develop specialist child and
adolescent eating disorders services.
training
We offer workshops and presentations on child and adolescent eating disorders
treatment, service development and research outcomes to professional groups,
organisations and conferences. Workshops provide an introduction to family
therapy for child and adolescent eating disorders. They can be combined with
multi-family day treatment training or extended training secondments.
This programme consists of four consecutive days with up to 25 participants.
The programme addresses the theoretical underpinning, phases of treatment
and practical skills of running the MFT. Didactic and experiential techniques are
used to develop theoretical understanding and to enable participants to gain
insight, and learn about how families respond to this model.
The specific format is negotiated, but generally includes intensive four-day
training with follow-up meetings as required. A training group of 15 to 25
clinicians, from several services takes part. Content is tailored to the specific
needs of the services and is modified depending on the existing skills and
knowledge of the participants. The focus is on MFT treatment but general
aspects of family therapy is also covered.
Family therapy for adolescent eating disorders training
• An understanding of the theoretical principles underpinning effective family intervention in child and adolescent eating disorders
• Develop specific skills to engage and intervene with families where a child or adolescent has an eating disorder
• Explore ways in which systemic family therapy and individual therapy skills can be combined with knowledge about
eating disorders, nutrition and the medical risk associated with eating disorders in the context of a team
Supervision and consultancy
• Ongoing group consultation and group or individual supervision provides continuity for development and implementation
of the treatment model in service settings
Multidimensional Treatment
Foster Care Service
Location: Maudsley Hospital
Mode: Training and consultation
We provide training and consultancy services in the Multidimensional
Treatment Foster Care (MTFC) model to multiagency
teams running a MTFC programme.
Our team also holds the United Kingdom Network Partnership
agreement with the programme originators in the USA, and
can provide a package of training and consultation to local
authorities and fostering agencies wishing to set up a new
MTFC programme in the United Kingdom.
The MTFC programmes, developed and researched in the
USA over 40 years ago by the Oregon Social Learning
Centre (OSLC), provides an evidence-based intervention for
children and young people in foster care. The programmes
are designed for those with complex behavioural and
emotional difficulties who have experienced, or are at risk
of, multiple placement disruptions.
MTFC works by having highly trained foster carers supported
by a clinical team. Together, they deliver individual treatment
programmes. Each foster family works with one child at
a time for between six and 12 months. Foster carers and
clinical staff are trained in behaviour management systems
for the age group with which they work. These systems
involve giving lots of encouragement, building skills and
celebrating achievements.
We offer three programmes spanning the age range from
three to 17 years. We conduct regular audits of outcomes
which are reported to the Department for Education
in July each year.
Who is this programme for
• Local authority social service departments with partner
agencies, such as health and education
• Primary Care Trust’s and Children’s Trusts
• Independent fostering agencies
Outcomes
• Promote stability for the child and the ability to live
in a family, whether the intended outcome is a return home
to birth family, extended family, long-term fostering, adoption
or independent living
• Improved outcomes for children and young people, and
a broadened range of out of home placements for children
with more complex needs
• Support for local authorities and other agencies, to help
deliver an effective treatment foster care programme
• Participants can become certified as MTFC providers by the
programme originators at the Oregon Social Learning Centre
“ Before all I saw was a brick wall, but now
I’m going to college.” Young person, age 16
Our team provides training and consultation
to local authorities running Multidimensional
Treatment Foster Care programmes nationally.
Children and young people in the
Multidimensional Treatment Foster Care
programme for adolescents have shown
reductions in offending (43% v 16%) violence
(76.6% v 42.5%), sexual behaviour difficulties
(49.5% v 25.6%), and self-harm (33.3% v 4.5%)
