“Before when I was upset or
stressed I used to cut myself.
Now I stop and think about
which of the coping skills
I have learnt that I can use
to help me calm down.”
Our service specialises in the assessment and treatment
of young people who have a history of self-harm and
symptoms associated with borderline personality disorder
such as impulsiveness, unstable relationships, anger,
difficulties controlling emotions and feelings of emptiness.
We provide assessment, treatment, consultation and
training. Treatment involves individual therapy and group
skills training for the young person. The young person’s
parents or carers also take part in group skills training.
Assessment
Pre-treatment
Treatment
A comprehensive assessment with the young person and their
parents or carers, to clarify diagnostic status, in particular whether
the young person meets criteria for emerging borderline personality
disorder. Self-harm behaviours and suitability for DBT are assessed.
An assessment report is sent to the young person, their parents
or carers and the referrer.
A series of up to six individual sessions with the young person to
orientate them to DBT, assess and strengthen motivation, clarify
and prioritise goals of treatment, and for the young person to
decide whether they wish to commit to DBT.
Consists of weekly individual work and group skills training for the
young person and group skills training for their parents or carers.
Skills training via telephone is also available. A psychiatric medication
review and follow-up are added as required. Duration of treatment
is up to one year.
