Forensic Mental Health Service<br />

Criteria<br />

Eligibility<br />

• Up to 18 years old<br />

• Male or female<br />

• Engaged in or at risk of offending behaviour<br />

Location: Maudsley Hospital<br />

Mode: Outpatient<br />

Young people with behavioural<br />

problems have increased rates of<br />

underlying emotional <strong>and</strong><br />

developmental problems, as well as<br />

learning difficulties. These problems<br />

often go undiagnosed as the<br />

difficulties may be masked by the<br />

young person’s difficult behaviour.<br />

We provide specialist forensic services, treating complex <strong>and</strong><br />

high risk cases. Many of the young people we work with are<br />

vulnerable, <strong>and</strong> present with severe psychopathology.<br />

Young people referred to us may be involved with the<br />

criminal justice system or be at high risk of being so<br />

in the future. They are likely to present with behavioural<br />

problems like violence <strong>and</strong> aggression towards others,<br />

harming themselves, fire setting or engaging in sexually<br />

inappropriate behaviour.<br />

We provide a fast-track service for cases requiring<br />

an urgent response because of the nature of the presenting<br />

problem or, in some cases, the time limits imposed by<br />

criminal proceedings. We conduct home <strong>and</strong> community<br />

assessments where appropriate.<br />

Interventions which may be provided<br />

• Assessments involving structured diagnostic interviews,<br />

psychometry, risk assessment, risk formulation <strong>and</strong><br />

treatment recommendations<br />

• Support <strong>and</strong> partnership work with community <strong>CAMHS</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> other agencies, to help manage risk <strong>and</strong> complex<br />

behavioural difficulties<br />

• Medico-legal assessments <strong>and</strong> reports for criminal proceedings<br />

• Offence-related interventions for anger management,<br />

violence reduction, sexual offending <strong>and</strong> dangerous fire<br />

setting behaviour<br />

• Trauma-related interventions<br />

• Consultation <strong>and</strong> care planning for forensic cases in<br />

outlying secure facilities<br />

Outcomes<br />

• Completion of structured risk assessment<br />

• Identification of protective factors (mitigating risk)<br />

• Provision of risk management strategy<br />

• Involvement of the young person <strong>and</strong> their family<br />

in the care plan<br />

• Improvement in the young person’s Children’s Global<br />

Assessment Scale score in cases where intervention<br />

is provided<br />

Complex <strong>and</strong> high risk case structured forensic assessment involves<br />

a consultant psychiatrist <strong>and</strong> clinical psychology psychometric<br />

evaluation, where indicated. We offer a forensic diagnostic<br />

assessment, risk formulation <strong>and</strong> intervention. This may include<br />

additional consultation with the referring team <strong>and</strong> a risk or<br />

intervention review.<br />
