SLaM offers the most extensive portfolio of mental
health services in the United Kingdom, supported
by internationally recognised training and research.
Each year, 5000 people receive hospital treatment,
and 32,000 receive outpatient care.
We are the only mental health trust in the UK to host
a Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) with a special focus
on children and adolescents, which is pioneering the
translation of scientific developments into new ways
of screening, detecting, treating and preventing mental
illness. The BRC is managed in partnership with the
Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London, and
funded by the National Institute for Health Research.
We are focused on promoting mental health and wellbeing,
rather than simply responding to severe mental
illness. The Trust is focusing on early intervention and
supporting children and young people with mental
health problems at an early stage in their lives.

We are proud of our unique clinical and academic
partnership with the adjacent Institute of Psychiatry,
part of King’s College London. The Institute is the
largest academic community in Europe devoted to
the study and prevention of mental health problems.
Working together means that lessons learnt from
research are translated directly into better treatment
locally, throughout the United Kingdom, and
internationally. Many of our National and Specialist
CAMHS services are led by academics, helping the
translation of research into practice.

SLaM has joined with King’s College London, Guy’s
and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and King’s
College NHS Foundation Trust to establish King’s
Health Partners, an Academic Health Sciences
Centre (AHSC).
As one of only five AHSCs in the United Kingdom,
we deliver healthcare to patients and undertake
health-related science and research. We also have
a well-developed role in teaching and education.
Our aim is to create a centre where world-class
research, teaching and clinical practice are brought
together for the benefit of patients. We want to make
sure that the lessons from research are used more
swiftly, effectively and systematically to improve
healthcare services for people with physical and
mental health problems.
At the same time as competing on the international
stage, our focus remains on providing the local
community with the very best care that the NHS has
to offer. King’s Health Partners is bringing real and
lasting benefits to the communities of south London.
Local people will continue to benefit from access to
worldleading healthcare experts and clinical services
which are underpinned by the latest research
knowledge. There are also benefits for the local area
in regeneration, education, jobs and economic growth.
SLaM’s services are organised into Clinical Academic
Groups (CAGs). The creation of CAGs involves
bringing people together who are experts in their field
– whether that’s cancer care, dementia or diabetes –
so that we can offer patients the very best care and
treatment, based upon reliable research evidence. This
involves clinical staff like doctors and nurses working
alongside academic researchers much more closely
than ever before. And it means that patients will
receive a high quality service.
There are eight CAGs involving mental health
services, teaching and research:
