Our Service
Our child and adolescent national and specialist
service includes a range of outpatient clinics and five
inpatient units, located at the Maudsley Hospital in
Camberwell, the Bethlem Royal Hospital in Beckenham
and Woodland House in Staplehurst. Our services are
renowned nationally and internationally, with clinical
practice that thrives on links with the Institute of
Psychiatry, King’s College London and the Medical
Research Council Child Psychiatry Unit.
Our clinical teams are fully committed to multidisciplinary,
comprehensive assessments of young
people within their family and social context,
taking into account their academic achievements
and potential. This enables us to develop a clear
understanding of any problems and possible solutions.
We have a strong tradition of evidence-based
treatment; our clinicians and academics have
contributed to many of the NICE guideline panels,
including obsessive compulsive disorder, attention
deficit hyperactivity disorder, post-traumatic stress
disorder and conduct disorder.
We are active in clinical research; developing, assessing
and implementing effective new treatments like multifamily
groups for eating disorders and computerdelivered
treatments for depression. Many teams
have aspects of their clinical, teaching or research
work funded at a national level.
We recognise that the physical clinical environment is
an important part of treatment and we are proud of
our ward and clinical spaces, which we’ve developed
through extensive consultation with young people and
their families. Our clinics are equipped with some of
the latest audiovisual equipment and videoconferencing
facilities, which are used to link with national and
international partner institutions, patients’ schools,
and other clinics, in situations where assessment and
treatment need to be delivered further afield.
We also offer training programmes and service
development support for mental health professionals
both nationally and internationally.
