Programme Programme structure Cost Unit
Outpatient
Location: Maudsley Hospital
service development
We provide training in single and multiple family therapy
approaches, the treatment of child and adolescent eating
and team-based outreach training for larger groups.
Our multi-family therapy (MFT) treatment training is relevant
not only to clinicians working with eating disorders, but to
those working with other mental health problems like
obsessive compulsive disorder, substance misuse, depression,
We offer follow-up consultation and ongoing supervision
Outreach teambased
training
We offer workshops and presentations on child and adolescent eating disorders
treatment, service development and research outcomes to professional groups,
organisations and conferences. Workshops provide an introduction to family
therapy for child and adolescent eating disorders. They can be combined with
multi-family day treatment training or extended training secondments.
This programme consists of four consecutive days with up to 25 participants.
The programme addresses the theoretical underpinning, phases of treatment
and practical skills of running the MFT. Didactic and experiential techniques are
used to develop theoretical understanding and to enable participants to gain
insight, and learn about how families respond to this model.
The specific format is negotiated, but generally includes intensive four-day
training with follow-up meetings as required. A training group of 15 to 25
clinicians, from several services takes part. Content is tailored to the specific
needs of the services and is modified depending on the existing skills and
knowledge of the participants. The focus is on MFT treatment but general
aspects of family therapy is also covered.
“ This is the most practical, useful training
I have been involved with in years. I loved
how family role play carried across days so
that we could really get into it. The learning
was spot on with my practice and areas for
growth and change.” Course participant
