Over 90% of the children we have
treated have improved on target,
symptom-based clinical global
impression ratings (TSCGI).
Our service offers highly specialist pharmacological and
psychological assessment and treatment for children with
a variety of neuropsychiatric disorders, in the context of
complex neurodevelopmental disorders, genetic or
neurodegenerative disorders, acquired brain injury,
psychotropic-induced side-effects and children experiencing
specific medical conditions and terminal illnesses.
Innovative pharmacological and behavioural strategies
implemented within existing neuro-rehabilitation programmes
produced 90% good or excellent TS-CGI improvement.
Less than 8% of children referred have required
inpatient admissions.
Over 85% of children with neurodegenerative disorders,
including childhood dementias, have shown good or
excellent response on TS-CGI. We are the only clinic
currently specializing in this in the world.
Serious psychotropic-related side-effects such as tardive
dyskinesia has been successfully treated in the majority of
subjects referred to the clinic.

A comprehensive assessment with the child or young person
(depending upon abilities) and their parents or carers to clarify
diagnostic status, in particular neurodevelopmental and
neuropsychiatric disorders. Information is collated using internetbased
questionnaires, paper questionnaires, audio-conferencing and
video-conferencing methods in addition to face-to-face assessment
and information from a variety of sources is included e.g. child,
parent, schools, other agencies etc.
Medication initiation, monitoring and stabilisation. Nonpharmacological
treatment and support to parents or carers, as well
as CAMHS and educational colleagues.
Pharmacological intervention modifications. Non-pharmacological
treatment and support to parents or carers and CAMHS and
educational colleagues.

Criteria
Eligibility
• Two – 18 years old
• Male or female
• Centre for Interventional Paediatric Psychopharmacology assesses
and manages:
(i) Complex multiple co-morbid neuropsychiatric and
neurodevelopmental disorders such as ADHD, organic pathology,
autism spectrum disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder,
Tourette’s syndrome or tic disorders, epilepsy, paediatric bipolar
disorder, depression
(ii) Treatment-resistant neuropsychiatric disorders, especially in the
context of previous failed multiple pharmacological interventions
(iii) Children being considered for inpatient admission, with a
view to preventing this through fine-tuning of pharmacological
and psychological interventions
(iv) Assessment and treatment to facilitate and enable discharge
of children who have not responded adequately to long
inpatient admissions
(v) Serious psychopathology such as childhood regression and
childhood dementias, neurometabolic syndromes in the context
of genetic or medical disorders e.g. lysosomal storage disorders
such as Hurler’s syndrome, Hunter’s syndrome, Sanfilipo and
Gaucher’s disease, Niemann-Pick Type C
(vi) Psychopathology in those with severe and profound brain injury
(vii) Provides outreach neuropsychiatry and psychopharmacology
support to inpatient neurorehabilitation units
(viii) Serious medication-related side-effects such as tardive
dyskinesia, metabolic syndrome, cardiac complications etc
(ix) Children who need medication to manage psychopathology
in medically high-risk groups such as cardiomyopathy, organ
transplants

Training is available on topics relating to the assessment, treatment
and management of children and young people with complex
neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disorders in the context of
a range of physical conditions.
