Georges P Vanier School Every September in schools across the nation, hundreds of thousands of students run to raise funds for the fight against cancer. The last school day of September saw hundreds of Georges P. Vanier students run for this cause. Georges P. Vanier has been working with the City of Calgary to develop programs to enhance the student experience. Four programs are now in full swing. Konnects seeks to help with the transition to grade 7 from elementary school. Act Out for our grade 8 is an innovative school-based program for junior high age youth which uses drama as a way to learn, grow and deal with tough situations and life choices. The same issues are taken on in grade with the Spirit Girls program and the Wize Guyz program. The Wize Guyz program at Georges P. Vanier was featured in the Globe & Mail last spring. November will be exciting at Georges P. Vanier: Volleyball playoff and the start of Basketball. Report cards go home on November 23rd, and the fall term assembly is taking place at 12:30 on Nov 28th in the gymnasium. Buchanan Elementary AREA SCHOOL NEWS Students had a very busy month in October. The clubs are in full swing: YMCA Leadership Club, Computer Club and Green Thumbs. The Green Thumbs group visited the vacant lot across from the school to see the changes that fall brings to the plants. The Book Fair was held and school photos taken. The grade 5/6 class visited Fish Creek Park while grade 4/5 students went to the Museum of the Regiments. Students in the Skill classes began their swimming lessons at Emily Follensbee School. The Earth Rangers, an environmental group, visited the school. Grade 6 participated in Free the Children “We Day” rally at the Saddledome on October 24 November 5, 6, 7, Aussie X Program teaches students how to play cooperative, non-competitive Australian Games. November 8, Volunteer presentation, grade 5/6 November 9, 10:45 am, Remembrance Day Assembly. Everyone is welcome. November 15, participation in the national Free the Children “We Day”, a mini-version of what the grade 6’s went to on October 24. November 23, Kindergarten and grade 4/5 to Heritage Park November 29, Empathy Virtue Assembly, 9:15 a.m. Buchanan Parent Council continues to collect Campbell’s Soup labels. Drop them off at the school. Remember to buy your SUTP coupon book from Buchanan. Call the school at 403 777-6260 and someone will get a book to you. We are still being beautified. Panelling is being installed under the windows that went in last spring. This should make the school much more attractive and more of an aesthetic asset to the community. Coffee! Come join other caregivers – parents, grandparents, day home providers, anyone looking after your child(ren) – for a cup of coffee from 9:00am – 10:30am in the staff room on the last day of the week. James Fowler High School The staff of James Fowler have planned an exciting, productive and engaging school year and it is our wish that all of our students will take full advantage of all the wonderful and rich opportunities that the school community has to offer. Our enrollment this year is approximately fifteen hundred students (an increase of one hundred students from the previous year). Most of our students travel from many northeast neighborhoods and a few of the newly developed northwest communities in addition to the communities surrounding James Fowler. As a result of our increase in students, we have been supported by Calgary Transit who has added an additional bus and re-routed existing bus routes to better service our students. In its fifth year, our Arts-Centered Learning alternative program continues to offer students an opportunity to learn the core high school curriculum through an arts-based focus. In its third year, our Advanced Placement program continues to attract many students who wish more academic rigor while completing the core high school 12 Highland Park Community News November 2012
curriculum. We are also pleased to off er a full range of core and option Knowledge and Employability courses for students in all grades. At James Fowler it is our goal to meet the educational needs of all of our students and also to improve our facility for our students. As such we have installed thirty new cafeteria tables and have installed two new counters where students can eat their lunch or study. Also we have updated our library bookshelves and have created a student study space. As we continue to improve the facility at James Fowler High School for our students, we are focused on creating a more student-focused space infused with color and energy. Fall is both an exciting and busy time at James Fowler High School as we focus on the start of the fi rst semester. Teachers have created opportunities to take students beyond the classroom experience by off ering a full range of co-curricular and extra-curricular activities through clubs, fi ne and performing arts, volunteerism, athletics and curriculum-based clubs and activities. Whether students are a new grade ten student, a new student to James Fowler or a continuing grade eleven and twelve student, we actively encourage all students to get involved in the community of the school and become involved in as many activities as possible. Our School Council provides an excellent opportunity for parents and guardians to learn about the school and to have a voice in the education our children. School Council meetings are held the fi rst Wednesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the library conference room. If you are a parent of a James Fowler High School student, we would welcome your attendance and support at our monthly meetings. We are appreciative of our very supportive parents on our School Council who are committed to improving our school. Last year, in addition to our School Council members, parents volunteered their time over two days at a Casino to raise funds for our students. With this generous donation to our school last year, we were able to purchase a new 2013 Bluebird 65 passenger bus. Th is year our casino is scheduled for November 4 and 5. If you are a parent of a James Fowler student and would like to assist our parents with this Casino, please contact the school. We are excited to have full service technical shops that are available to our community. If you have a need for service in Autobody, Auto Mechanics, Cosmetology or catering from our Commercial Foods program, please contact the school.
