Good turnout for meeting Contributed BY URSULA McEWAN There was an excellent turnout of members when the Salt Spring Island Council of the Catholic Women's League met in the parish hall on Tuesday evening, October 14 Ṗresident Alicia Anderson made the presentation of a life membership to Elsa Drummond. This was awarded to her jointly by the C.W.L. diocesan councils of Prince George and Victoria for her years of devoted service to the league in both dioceses. Joy Johnsen gave a report on the diocesan regional meeting held at French Creek on October 6. The theme of the meeting was the promotion of Christian family life and councils were asked to support the B.C. Council for the Family. Prayer and prayer life were emphasized and members were urged to participate in ecumenical activities in the community. League development and leadership training were also stressed. After some discussion, it was decided to have a Communion Sunday for league members on the first Sunday of the month at the 11:15 mass. It was announced that a day of retreat for the women of the various parishes is being planned for Monday, Nov. 3 at the Trinity Centre in Nanaimo. Members also discussed having a one-day parish retreat here during Advent. Correspondence included a letter from the local branch of the legion, advising the various groups in the community that to celebrate the golden anniversary of the Legion coming up in 1981, they had decided to promote a Canada Day Festival. All groups on Salt Spring Island are asked to contribute ideas and proposals and to participate to make the festival a success. A request for help from Roma Sturdy, co-ordinator of the O.A.P., was also brought to the attention of the members. Drivers are needed to take pensioners to such things as doctor's appointments, and ladies available to help in this work were asked to contact Mrs. Sturdy. The remainder of the meeting was devoted to finalizing plans for the Harvest Bazaar being held on Saturday, Oct. 25 in the parish hall. The November meeting will be held in the evening, on Tuesday, Nov. 4, starting with mass at 7:30 pm. The Honourable Brian Smith 7 P.M. I WO GULF ISLANDS DRIFTWOOD Page Eleven i KICK-OFF Juvenile soccer is getting started BY MALCOLM LEGG Last weekend saw the opening of juvenile play for Salt Spring's many off-island teams and the long wait to start proved beneficial for most. The long delay in starting league play was to allow teams to get properly registered and ensure full teams. It was a delay that frustrated our players as they have eagerly awaited the chance to prove themselves. The Division 6C Wranglers swung into action with a fine 1-1 draw with Peninsula in their first league encounter as a team. The Strikers of Division 5C showed their class with a solid 4-1 win over Peninsula. The Division 4B Selects were our only losers by a 5-0 count to Prospect Lake. But considering the Selects were promoted last year from C to B and Prospect Lake dropped down from A. their performance in future games should be better. In Division 3B play the Kicks were awesome as they disposed of Juan de Fuca by a 12-0 count. The Cyclones, our new team in Division 2B, won even though they did not play. Their opponents, Gordon Head, forfeited the two points as they could not field a team. Not a bad start for our youth teams, three wins, one tie and one loss, and they can only get better. Come out to Portlock Park and watch these fine teams play. REFEREES' PROGRAM As I promised last week I will outline the referees' program we are trying to offer. Refereeing is probably the most difficult and most thankless aspect of soccer. No matter what the man in black calls, someone always will argue. In fact, his best hope is that the game ends in a tie. That way. both sides are happy. The referree's responsibilities are enormous as he controls the full game and all 22 players on the field, administering the rules and punishing players who breach those rules. -His most difficult problem is, unlike the players, he is not allowed to make any mistakes. To overcome these difficulties, a referee must always remember certain factors to maintain his authority in any game: • Always keep up with the play. • Always maintain a good position to see the play. • Be firm with your decisions and use your whistle-it is not an ornament. • Be sure you determine the intent before making a call. • And most of all. use common sense. In order to develop referees and refereeing our association over the past years has run its own course to teach new referees and assist existing officials. Unfortunately, this program has only dealt with the learning and testing of the rules of the game, leading to our own certification of officials. This season we are trying to expand the program through the 5 year term deposits 3 1 /4% Gulf Islands Insurance Ltd. tfn following steps: written test on rules of the game leading to Salt Spring Island Referees Certification; field experience done through refereeing games with a critical report filed by a league official; and B.C. referees' course for provincial certification, to be run this spring. It is our association's aim to develop a good core of referees out of our soccer playing youth which, coupled with our senior referees, will give a very competent group of officials. If you are interested in the program please contact me at 537-5870. We always welcome new officials into the fold and would like to have a referee-in-chief to coordinate the training program. MEN'S SOCCER . Salt Spring Blues, 2; Victoria Ocas, 2. A big crowd came to Portlock Park to watch the Blues do battle with the Orcas from Victoria. It was a hard-fought battle with neither side giving an inch as the two teams exchanged penalty shots to gain a single point each. In many ways it was a strange game as all the goals came on penalty shots, a rarity indeed, but realistically it reflected the rough play that flared up occasionally during the game. The Blues started shakily, looking very flat in the early stages and soon were behind 1-0 on the first penalty. The Blues rallied and Gary Hartwig equalized from the spot after Arne Hengstler was hacked down. At this stage the Blues lost their composure, arguing with the official and generally dropping their two-touch game, which led to another Orcas penalty shot goal. The Blues regrouped at the half and came out in the second half with a better attitude. It reflected in their play as they controlled 90% of the play, scored the equalizer through Gary from the spot and quite easily could have had the win with all the chances they had. Next, a big one as the team takes on the Castaways in Victoria. INTRA-ISLAND Senior: J. Panthers, 1 (Charlie Hume); Fury, 1 (Chad Little). 2. Rowdies, 3 (Kevin Smith 2, Chris Koski); Kanaka, 1 (Suzanne Terrick). Junior: 1. Demons, 0; Eagles, 0. 2. Eagles, 1 (Curtis Galbraith); Green Machine, 1 (Corin Fairbrother). Thomson buys decent papers, 'reduces them to dinky ones' "In the country of the blind, the one-eyed man is king." The more I ponder on this saying, the more implications appear, including that awesome indictment of war, Apocalypse Now, where the general staff judge a field commander to be insane. In that he comprehended his own remoteness from reality, he was surely less insane than those .who could not see how far they had strayed from "acceptable" conduct of war (if that's not too contradictory a term!) "The Anarchist" is another case in point. Compared to those of us who are wilfully blind, his perceptions are acute. But compared to others, he seems shortsighted. I've no wish to start an intramural war. or I would take him on for his recent indictment of Christianity (or Christians - I'm not sure which he was angrier with). Trouble is I agree with him! Christians kept me out of the church for nearly 30 years, and it was only when I found the gospel irresistible and the behaviour of the people virtually irrelevant, that I made my way back into the church. (Also, I grow up in a time when anarchy was "the thing" to believe. Unfortunately, the anarchists whom I knew were such a miserable bunch of human beings that I lost my faith in their loss of faith...) APPLIES BLINKERS The Establishment would approve of one-eyed men (and women). It certainly does its best to apply the blinkers to us all. Walter Stewart in Canadian Newspapers; The Inside Story, has done us a great service. Naturally I welcome his book with open arms as it totally agrees with what I have said and written for some time: we only read what the powers-that-be want us to read. St. Clair McCabe, president of Thomson Newspapers, once said: "We just buy dinky little papers. Sometimes I cringe to look at them." Walter Stewart maintains that Thomson buys decent papers W.E. Specific examples are quoted: '' Dennis Gruending, writing of the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix. says: '...the Siftons used company loyalty and personal conservatism as their basis for promotion, and none of the idealists were in line.' ' and reduces them to "dinky little papers". "...Or, as witnessed on Black Wednesday, August 27 - when Thomson and Southam simultaneously closed down two of the country's oldest newspapers - stabs them to death with sharp pencils." Barrie Zwicker, reviewing the book for Maclean's, tells us: SORRY CANVAS "The sorry collective canvas the authors paint is of a lacklustre and stultifyingly conservative world. The subtle links of appointments are smoked out and the self-censorship is gruelling, with the primary blame landing on the shoulders at the top." He continues; "A blueprint for a better press can't be found on these pages. Rather, the book reads like a sorry litany of the deep flaws of Canadian newspaperdom, and is worthy for that reason. The most dangerous affliction is the blindness of newspaper, owners to anything other than right-wing IDEAS MUST BE CONGENIAL And Harry Midgley echoes: "While Southam Press claims, and I do not doubt that it is true, that it does not interfere with its publishers' authority, it is also true that people do not reach positions of power within the organization unless their ideas and opinions are congenial to those of the establishment." Of the Edmonton Journal, he writes: "Among its resident or local political columnists (it) has no one who is strongly anti-establishment: it has no one well-known as a 'progressive': it has no one from the political left." B»rrie Zwicker summarizes: "What this book does reveal, and compellingly, is the self-imposed blinkers of the Canadian press. The Canadian public - emperors of the newspaper industry included - is being denied a true diversity of outlook and ultimately, if those . blinkers are not removed, a denial of political options."
