CHILD SUPPORT<br />

IN SOUTH CAROLINA<br />

The <strong>South</strong> Carol<strong>in</strong>a Department <strong>of</strong> Social <strong>Services</strong>’<br />

(DSS) Child Support En<strong>for</strong>cement Division (CSED)<br />

provides services to obta<strong>in</strong> child support money.<br />

These services <strong>in</strong>clude f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g the parent who is<br />

not support<strong>in</strong>g the child, establish<strong>in</strong>g and en<strong>for</strong>c<strong>in</strong>g<br />

child support orders and establish<strong>in</strong>g the identity <strong>of</strong><br />

the father. Problems about property, custody and<br />

visitation cannot be handled by the CSED.<br />

Who Can Get Help Anyone who has custody<br />

<strong>of</strong> a child and who needs help <strong>in</strong> gett<strong>in</strong>g support<br />

payments may apply <strong>for</strong> services. Non-custodial<br />

parents may apply to have paternity established or<br />

to have their support order reviewed.<br />

What is the Application Process Persons<br />

apply<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> or receiv<strong>in</strong>g help under the Temporary<br />

Aid <strong>for</strong> Needy <strong>Families</strong> (TANF) program<br />

automatically receive child support en<strong>for</strong>cement<br />

services. Those not receiv<strong>in</strong>g TANF must complete<br />

an application <strong>for</strong>m (there is a $25.00 fee).<br />

Applications are available at county DSS <strong>of</strong>fices,<br />

and the county clerk court <strong>of</strong>fices. You may also<br />

call CSED at (803) 898-9210 or 1-800-768-5858.<br />

CARING FOR TOMORROW’S CHILDREN<br />

The Car<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> Tomorrow’s Children program provides a<br />

book with guidance and <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation to create awareness<br />

and promote early and cont<strong>in</strong>uous prenatal care, wellchild<br />

care, and immunizations. The book emphasizes the<br />

importance <strong>of</strong> prenatal care that will assist <strong>in</strong> reduc<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>fant mortality and birth defects. The book also focuses<br />

on immunizations and other preventive measures to assist<br />

parents with keep<strong>in</strong>g their baby healthy. Any woman <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>South</strong> Carol<strong>in</strong>a, regardless <strong>of</strong> location or <strong>in</strong>come, who is<br />

pregnant or who has a child under the age <strong>of</strong> one, can<br />

get a Car<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> Tomorrow’s Children book. The book is<br />

free and can be obta<strong>in</strong>ed by visit<strong>in</strong>g a doctor’s or health<br />

care provider’s <strong>of</strong>fice, go<strong>in</strong>g to the health departments or<br />

by call<strong>in</strong>g the Care L<strong>in</strong>e (1-800-868-0404). The Car<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>for</strong> Tomorrow’s Children program is a public/private<br />

partnership with the <strong>South</strong> Carol<strong>in</strong>a Department <strong>of</strong><br />

Health and Environmental Control and Blue Cross<br />

and Blue shield <strong>of</strong> <strong>South</strong> Carol<strong>in</strong>a.<br />
