March 9, 2012
Dear Parents/Guardians & Students
The Board of Education of School District 68 (Nanaimo-Ladysmith) is asking for your input regarding a possible
change to the Local School Calendar for the 2012-13 school year.
Under the proposed Local School Calendar, Spring Break would be extended to the Easter weekend. Spring Break is
scheduled for Monday, March 18 to Friday, March 22 next year. The proposed Local School Calendar in SD68
would add Monday, March 25 to Thursday, March 28 to the Spring Break. Good Friday is March 29 and Easter
Monday is April 1. The instructional time for those extra four days would be made up by extending each week in
session by approximately 32 minutes in elementary schools and 35 minutes in secondary schools.
These changes are being considered primarily for budgetary reasons. It is estimated that approximately $366,000 can
be saved next year as a result of a longer Spring Break. The proposed Local School Calendar for the Nanaimo-
Ladysmith School District is attached. Your school’s principal will be consulting with parents over the next few
weeks about changes to the daily schedule at your school if this proposal is accepted by the Board.
Before making a decision on this proposal, the Board wants to hear the opinions of parents, students, employees and
partner groups.

You can give your input by completing an online survey at www.sd68.bc.ca. Please note that this survey will
be available until Thursday, April 12, 2012.
Another way to give your opinion to the Board is to write a letter to the Board of Education, School District
68 (Nanaimo-Ladysmith), 395 Wakesiah Avenue, Nanaimo, B.C. V9R 3K6 or by fax at 250 741-5309.
Please note that all correspondence must be received by Friday, April 13, 2012, at 12 noon.

The Board of Education will hold a meeting at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 10 at the NDSS Gymnasium to
receive presentations about the 2012-13 budget and the proposed Local School Calendar. To make a
presentation contact Cathy Kelt, 250 741-5238 or ckelt@sd68.bc.ca by 12 noon Thursday, April 5, 2012.
On Wednesday, April 18, 2012, the Board of Education will hold a special meeting, at which time trustees are
expected to make a decision about whether the proposed changes to the Local School Calendar will be implemented.
The meeting is open to the public and is scheduled for 6 p.m. in the District Administration Centre, 395 Wakesiah
Avenue, Nanaimo.
On behalf of the Board of Education, I would like to thank you for your input into this important topic.
Yours truly,
Jamie Brennan
Board Chair
